Machine rotative.

Rotary machine. The present invention relates to a rotary machine! Of the type comprising a cylindrical rotor housed in a hollow stator so as to form with the cylindrical wall a plurality of eccentric chambers. intended to receive a working fluid, this rotor being equipped with vanes capable of sliding in grooves provided in the radial planes of the rotor, and capable of being thrown by centrifugal force towards the outside of the rotor during the rotation of the rotor. the latter, so as to successively sweep the aforesaid chambers.
If a working fluid is admitted into each chamber at the appropriate time, so as to exert a driving impulse there on one side of the vane, the rotor receives a recoverable rotational movement on the machine shaft, which then functions as a motor. tor. An engine of this type is, for example, described in German patent No. 687573 by the same inventor.
Yes, on the contrary. a rotation is imparted to the shaft of the machine and a compressible or non-compressible fluid is admitted into the chambers of the stator, the machine operates, depending on the nature of the fluid and its pressure, as a compressor, blower or suction or pressure pump.
An imperfection of rotary machines of this kind known to date lies in the need to equip them with separate devices for distributing the fluid, which, having to be controlled at an appropriate speed in relation to the speed of rotation of the machine, require an expenditure of motive power and lead to construction complications, since they require the use of valves, valves and control or transmission members with precise and delicate adjustment.
On the other hand, at somewhat high rotational speeds, one observes in these machines an exaggerated friction of the ends of the vanes on the internal wall of the stator, which leads to considerable wear, loss of power and leaks. . Finally, the problem of lubricating the components carried by the rotor presents difficulties.
The main object of the present invention is to obviate these drawbacks of rotary machines of the specified species, while simplifying their construction.
For this purpose, according to the invention. the ina - china is equipped with bodies which absorb at least part of the centrifugal stress exerted on the pallets, with the aim of (1 (, limiting the friction on the peripheral surface of the stator, the entry into function of these members being determined by the said rotor rotation, which also operates the "devices for lubricating the members carried by the rotor, which itself acts as a working fluid distribution device.
The organs of absorption of the. Centrifugal stress can be carried by the rotor or by the stator.
They can be arranged so as to limit the radial displacement of the vanes towards the outside of the rotor soles the effect of. centrifugal force.
In the case where the vanes are fitted with sealing strips placed in housings provided in the free end of the vanes radially with respect to the rotor, these strips are mounted so as to be able to slide freely in order to be forced out by force. centrifugal outwards of the pallets against the peripheral wall of the stator.
The appended drawings represent, by way of examples, three forms of operation: execution of the machine according to the invention, respectively a direct rotation motor, intended to run wild with steam, a blower or compressor. at. low compression and a higher pressure compressor.
In these drawings: Fig. 1 is a longitudinal section of the upper half of the engine taken along line I-I of the, fig. 2, with an elevation view of the. lower half ('said stator.
Fig. 2 is a cross section of the iliotor taken along the broken line II-II from the end. 1.
Fig. 3 schematically shows a perspective with a break, a variant of the lateral sealing device of the engine chambers.

<tb> Corfornlf "tllellt <SEP> an <SEP> principle <SEP> same <SEP> of <SEP> engines <SEP> of <SEP> celtic <SEP> species, <SEP> a fluid <SEP> <SEP > motor, <SEP> in this case steam, is admitted into each chamber of the stator and acting there on the back of a vane, gives rise to. a torque causing the rotation of the rotor, during which the front side of the paddle expels the relaxed steam which has provided useful work during the previous turn of rotation through the exhaust port 10 (fig. 2).
The steam is distributed by the rotation of the rotor 1 itself constituting a distributor device which, at the appropriate time and without the intervention of any additional control member, places the chambers 5 in communication with fresh steam and cut off this communication as soon as a predetermined volume of steam has passed into chamber 5.
For this purpose, a lateral side of the stator comprises, for each chamber 5 of the motor, an opening 11 (fig. 1) constantly masked by the adjacent lateral wall of the rotor and connected, for example, to the fresh steam pipe provided in the stator. On the other hand, the rotor 1 comprises at the rear of each pallet, but however as close as possible to the latter, a cell 12 of suitable capacity, which, during a fraction of a rotation of the engine, connects the opening 11 of the stator with the chamber 5 (fig. 2).
For this purpose, the cell 12 is formed by a recess milled in the rotor and opening out onto the cylindrical surface of the latter through a slot 13.
On the other hand, the cell 12 is connected to a groove 14 milled in the flat side of the rotor arranged opposite the opening 11 of the stator, and profiled in an arc-, of-circle having as center the axis of the shaft 2 of the motor and as a radius, the. distance from the opening 11 of the center of the side shield of the stator. It follows from this arrangement that throughout the duration of the passage of the groove 14 in front of the slot 11, the fresh steam is injected into the cell 12 and passes from there into the working chamber 5, when the slot 13 opens into this last bedroom.
The start of the admission of steam into the groove 14 coincides with the moment when the slot 13 of the cell 12 has just passed from a chamber 5 of the stator into the neighboring chamber, and the end of the admission takes place after a desired time, during which a necessary quantity of steam is admitted into the chamber 5 of the engine.
For this purpose, the light 11 of the stator is disposed at. such a distance from the vertical plane separating the two chambers 5, and the arc-of-circle of the groove 14 extends over a length such that when the vanes 7 are located between the chambers 5, the slot 11 and the end of the groove 14 are offset by an angle corresponding to the desired intake duration.
It goes without saying that the conformation adopted for the groove and the slot can be reversed, so that the slot 11 on the lateral side of the stator has the shape of an arcuate groove, in front of which the opening passes. one end of the cell 12.
To ensure the seal between the two contiguous working chambers 5, while avoiding excessive friction between the rotor and the sator, it is provided -in the. embodiment shown, to have at the junction of the peripheral walls 9 of these chambers, a sealing sole 15 housed in the stator and resiliently biased to be applied to the cylindrical wall of the rotor, for example, by pistons 16 actuated while the engine is running, by the. fresh steam pressure allowed above. these pistons in a box 17 connected to the vapor jacket of the stator.
To achieve sealing, these pistons are fitted with sealing rings.
To prevent their free ends from rubbing against the wall of the stator, due to the radial movement of the vanes during operation of the rotor - or else from exerting any pressure on the sealing strips 8 which slide freely in the longitudinal grooves provided in the free end of the vanes 7 - while allowing the action of the centri- fugal force to drive freely these bars 8, the vanes 7, guided straight in the grooves 6 of the rotor by means of devices reducing friction, such as, for example, ball or roller bearings.
needles not shown, are subject to a device lobed in the rotor and reducing the action of centrifugal force on said vanes. For this purpose, the diametrically opposed pallets, hereinafter called "main pallet", are articulated to the two opposite vertices of an articulated parallelogram formed by connecting rods 19, and the other two tops of which are articulated to counterweights constituted by secondary vanes 20, this device being housed in a recess 21 made in the rotor and profiled so as to,
allow the deformation \ of the articulated parallelogram under the effect of the centrifugal force itself, a function of the variations of the. rotor speed (change from standstill to full speed).
When the rotor turns, the action of centrifugal force is exerted simultaneously on the vanes 7 and 20 and forces the articulated parallelogram to take a position of equilibrium under the action of two opposing stresses tending to. lengthen it simultaneously along its two diagonals.
The weight of the main pallets 7 is greater than that of the secondary pallets 20, so that the first are sufficiently stressed, while the engine is running, to protrude on the. periphery of the rotor, however only under the effect of. difference in the stresses acting mainly on the main vanes and the secondary vanes of the rotor.
As for the sealing strips 8 placed freely in the grooves of these pallets ,. they are chased by the. centrifugal force due to their own weight, against the <B>, </B> periphery of the stator, already ensuring. on their own, the perfect peripheral tightness with the precisely predetermined friction minimum, then that the friction surface and the weight of these bars are chosen to be very low compared to the. area and weight of pallets; who produce useful work.

For this purpose, in the embodiment shown in, FIG. 2, the secondary paddles 20 may comprise a recess 23 serving as a housing for a spring 24 in the form of a <B> V </B> or hairpin, the branches of which project from the paddle. On the other hand, the connecting rods 19 articulated to the pallet carry pins 25 arranged at an appropriate distance from the articulation. so as to put under tension the spring 24, when the main vanes 7 are located at the junction of the neighboring working chambers 5.
It is easily understood that when the rotor has acquired a certain speed, thanks to which the secondary vanes 20 come closer, by rotating the links 19 to which they are articulated, the pins <B> 25 </B> move apart one from the other and are placed in positions in which they lose all contact with the branches of the spring 24, the eca-rtement of which is limited by the side walls of the housing 23.
In order to effectively obviate the possibility of leaks between the vanes 7 and 20 and the grooves 6, in the lateral sides of these grooves, oblique housings receiving bars are milled: sealing 26 (fig. 2) , which are driven by centrifugal force during the rotation of the rotor 1, so â. be applied by their cut ends at an angle against the vanes, with a pressure proportional to the speed of rotation of the engine.
To ensure the seal between the rotor and the lateral stator flanges, sealing rings 28 and 28 'can be interposed between these flanges and the rotor, so as to delimit laterally with sufficient sealing the working chambers 5 of the engine, one of these crowns and in particular the crown 28 'being pressed elastically against the rotor. For this purpose, the ring 28 'is free to move axially under the. pressure of the live steam circulating in an annular chamber 99 formed between said crown and the adjacent lateral flange of the stator. To prevent the entrainment of the. crown 28 'by the rotor, the latter is engaged on three guide pins (not shown) and fixed to said flange.
The sealing segments 31 prevent leakage of steam from the working chamber 5 into the steam chamber 29 and vice versa, and the; ribs 32 form a labyrinth preventing steam leaks to the outside of the engine. In the fixed sealing ring 28 is formed an annular pipe 33 distributing the live steam to the openings 11 which periodically coincide with the grooves 14 and cells 12 of the rotor.
Fresh steam is admitted into the. line 33 of the motor has an opening 34 through a moderator which may be of any suitable construction and the inlet of the steam is regulated in a known manner by a balanced valve controlled by a centrifugal regulator not shown.
A piston 35 is intended to balance any axial thrust which may result, if necessary, from the pressure of the high pressure fluid admitted into a groove 14 which is temporarily closed.
It is also planned to put all the lubrication of the parts carried by the rotor, under the control of the centrifugal force developed during the running of the engine.
To ensure the lubrication of the pallets. with their sealing strips 8 and 26, there is provided in this pallet, for example, a system of conduits 36 opening out through an opening on a narrow side of the pallet (fig. 1) and in the fixed sealing ring 28, a channel connected to a lubricator or oil pump.
The arrangement of the opening of the duct system 36 and of this channel is such that at each turn of rotation the opening of the. pipe 36 coincides with this channel and oil is injected through the pallet, so as to lubricate the latter, the bars 8, the oblique segments 26 and the ball bearings not shown. The centrifugal force developed by the rotation of the rotor is also used to control the lubrication of the articulated parallelogram and other members carried by the rotor.
For this purpose, lubricating oil is. contained in the recess? 1 of the rotor 1, (1 (, so that not only it greases the joints of the parallelogram, their axes 41 and the needle bearings 43, niolitéa dails the head of each link 19, but also it is driven by the centrifugal force towards the periphery of the rotor, thus ensuring a lubrication under pressure of all the latter.
Finally, the sealing strips 8 can be of a particular conformation such that they not only ensure the sealing (> against the peripheral wall 9 of the stator, but also the sealing in contact with the crowns 28 and 28 'or directly with the side flanges of the machine when the crowns are not used.
For this purpose, as can be seen in FIG. 1, each of the two bars 8 lobed. in the. same pallet has a cutout with oblique sides, the two cutouts being offset along the generatrix of the rotor, so as to each rest by a single oblique face on one of the inclined sides of a central wedge-shaped piece 47, actuated it also by centrifugal force while the machine is running. In this way, when the rotor turns, the bars are not only urged to rest on the periphery of the stator, but also to slide one relative to the other, so as to exert a lateral pressure ensuring the sealing.
The lateral sealing of the juxta-placed bars obtained by a force urging them to slide laterally with respect to one another along the generatrix of the rotor, can also be achieved by the device shown in FIG. 3.
For this purpose, each bar 8 'resp. 8 "has on one of its wide faces a blind notch 38 'resp. 38", which can unblock on one side on a side edge of the bed.

The admission of fresh steam ceasing when the end of a groove 14 has passed the opening 11, the steam expands in the chambers 5 and finally escapes through the conduits 10, after the paddles have unmasked the lights d. 'exhaust.
As soon as the motor fluid inlet is closed, the content of the. groove 14 could exert an axial thrust on the rotor and cause a significant friction against the opposite flange. This thrust is balanced by one or other of the many existing means, for example: by a thrust bearing or by the piston <B> 35 </B> placed in the axis of the machine, having the. same surface as the groove 14 and operating with the same fluid as that contained in the groove 14 (fig. 1).
The engine described above offers many advantages. It happily solves the issue of working fluid distribution, which is particularly thorny in direct-rotating engines, and can run at high speed without any difficulty. It also has great flexibility of operation and directly uses the static energy of the fluid, that is to say its pressure, to obtain the rotational movement. However, this increases the efficiency of the engine, whatever its power. This efficiency is further increased by the almost total elimination of leaks by the described sealing devices.
The motor, which is simple and robust in construction, consists of few parts, which ensures smooth operation, whatever its application.
Finally, the machine is perfectly balanced, because all the moving parts are centered.
The articulated parallelogram (s) allow precise adjustment of the pressure between the main and secondary vanes and the stator. In fact, each parallelogram bears on the stator, by means of the vanes and the sealing strips 8 linked together by lubricating oil constantly filling the housing of the strips 8. The secondary vanes 20, articulated to this parallelogram and whose action can be adjusted by varying their weight, make it possible to limit the pressure in contact with the main vanes 7 on the stator.
The useful work is done by means of the pallets which are rigid and offer a large surface to the efforts,. while the friction takes place only through the intermediary of the sealing strips 8, the surface of which is small and the weight minimal.
It goes without saying that the engine described can also operate with other working fluids and, for example, with compressed air, as a diesel or semi-diesel engine and be calculated to run at desired speeds.
On the other hand, with structural changes within the reach of any person skilled in the art, the rotary machine described can function as a compressor.
Figs. 4 and 5 show a blower machine with low compression and comprising, like the engine forming the subject of FIGS. 1 and 2, a cylindrical rotor 1 wedged on a shaft 2 rotating at a desired speed, and centered in the stator 4, in which are pre-. views of the working chambers 5 traversed by vanes 7 capable of sliding in grooves 6 hollowed out radially in the rotor.
The vanes 7, driven in the rotation of the rotor, compress the fluid, for example air, admitted through an opening 50, to expel it through an outlet opening 51 towards the place of its use. The vanes make it possible to ensure the distribution, by the rotor 1 itself, and. having exceeded hearing 50, isolate, in chamber 5, a volume of air to be compressed.
In order to limit the radial displacement of the vanes 7, due to the centrifugal stress exerted on them during the operation of the fan and thus to obviate a loss of power and the wear that could cause the friction of the ends of the vanes against the wall 9 of the stator as a result of the exaggerated pressure, each vane 7 is provided laterally with two rollers 52 which, under the effect of the centrifugal force, come into contact during the operation of the. machine, with a raceway 53 machined in the lateral flanges 3 of the stator.
The raceway 53 is of an oval outline similar to the profile of the internal wall 9 of the stator, and it is provided at such a distance from this wall that there is constantly a small clearance between the ends of the vanes 7 and the, aforesaid wall. In this way, some of the effort due to the. centrifugal force is transferred to said raceway, with the advantage that the usual sliding of the vanes on the stator is replaced by the rolling of the rollers 5? on path 53, resulting in a considerable reduction in friction and maintaining it below the. allowable limit.
A perfect seal between the end of the pallet 7 -and the wall 9 of the stator can obviously be obtained by the use of sealing pieces housed freely in the pallets so as to. be able to be driven out with moderate pressure by centrifugal force against the wall 9 of the stator. These parts of elan chéité can be similar, for example, to the bars 8 appearing in the fi, -. 1 to 3.
When it comes to low compression blowers, however, it is possible to dispense with the use of sealing parts of the kind described, by choosing the length of the blades 7 and the dimensions of the rolling path 53, so that the clearance between the end of the vanes and the wall of the stator remains confined within the limits of the. usual machining tolerance. As this set is normally filled with a lubricating film, leakage is kept to a minimum.
It is advantageous, in this case, to give the paddles a section which widens towards: their free end (fig. 4), so that by their roundings 54 they can expel, while the machine is running, the fluid < t compress or move, from the. peripheral wall of the chambers, which further reduces leaks.
Lubrication of the organs of the. machine is made, in the embodiment of FIGS. 4 and 5, also under the control of centrifugal force, but by a simplified device comprising an oil box 55, an axial channel 56 formed in the shaft? and transverse conduits .57 which conduct the lubricant.
towards the ball bearings> 8 and the side shields 3 of the stator, from where the lubricant spreads, through the clearance between the stator and the rotor, to lubricate the roller 5? and the raceway 53.
The fi-. I; and 7 show a rotary compressor giving a higher pressure than that obtained by the blower of FIGS. 4 and 5, and realizing the. compression required into several fractions and eg. in two floors.
It is known, in fact, (read compression in several stages with i-efroidis = (, nient intermediate between two successive stages advantageously makes it possible to maintain the compressed gas at a moderate temperature. In the current state of the art, it However, the combi @ enicnt of the compressors and, in particular, the spacing between the bearings of the rotor increases.
Compressors of this kind known to date are, in fact, constituted either by the juxtaposition of several rotors of different diameters wedged on a common shaft centered in a stator mine or else by a single rotor of a constant diameter rotating in a stator shaped, so as to form along said rotor mic plurality of juxtaposed chambers (the different capacities.
The rotary machine, in which the. rotation of the rotor produces the same effects from the point of view of the lubrication of the. distribution of the working fluid and the action of the centrifugal force on the vanes than in the engine <t:
the fan described differs in principle from the latter only by the fact that the ebanihres of the stator provided all around the cylindrical rotor are of unequal capacities. this qiii allows them to be used for the various compression stages. by connecting them obviously: in series, in successive order of volume, decreasing with the interposition of appropriate refrigerants.
As a reminder that in the case of the engine of fig. 1 and? or the blower of fig. 4 and 5, the cylindrical rotor 1 is provided with radial grooves 6 serving as a housing for the vanes 7, in the end of which can freely slide, under the effect of centrifugal force, the sealing strips 8, which, in the 'example shown,
are formed by juxtaposed strips placed on the field and which can be fitted with devices ensuring lateral sealing as described above.
The stator 4, in which the rotor is centered, has two recesses, forming working chambers 5 and 5 ', which, unlike the chambers 5 of the motor or of the fan, are of unequal capacities, the chamber 5 being, by example, with a capacity greater than that of chamber 5 '.
The stator is also equipped with a raceway 53 traced in a curve similar to that of the. peripheral wall 9 of the stator chambers, and the vanes 7 are provided with side rollers 52 subjected to follow this path, which thus limits the radial displacement of the vanes 7 towards the outside of the rotor during the rotation of the latter.
To lighten the pallets 7, these can include recesses 59 (fig. 7) provided in places such that even when the pallets 7 are out of the rotor as much as possible, these recesses are still located entirely inside the rotor. this last.
Considered in the direction of rotation of the rotor indicated by. arrow, the larger chamber 5 has an inlet 50 for air (or other gas) at the. initial pressure, and an outlet 60 connected to a refrigerant, for example, the tube refrigerant 61, whose outlet is connected to the plus. small chamber 5 'having at its opposite end a nettle 51 for compressed air to the desired degree.
The air sucked, for example, behind the pallet 7 'during its passage in front of the orifice 50 of the chamber 5, and separated from this orifice by the following pallet 7 "is xefouled by the front of the latter, so partially raising the pressure, through the refrigerant tubes 62, as soon as the vane 7 'has unmasked the outlet 60 of the chamber 5, which has become the low pressure chamber.
Cold water flowing through. the refrigerant cools the partially compressed air to a suitable temperature, at which it passes into the. bedroom 5 'to. the favor of his. proper pressure and the low pressure created therein by the 7 "'pallet, which completes the raising to the desired degree, the pressure of the air discharged from the front of this 7"' pallet towards the outlet 51 of the. chamber 5 ', becoming a high pressure chamber.
It follows from the above multi-stage rotary compressors, constructed on the same principles as the compressor described above, offer other advantages, apart from the. reduction in size and structural simplification due to the possibility of using a single rotor of constant diameter in a single stator.
Thus, for example, the vanes which heat up strongly in the high pressure chamber 5 'are effectively cooled by their periodic passage through the low pressure chamber 5, whose average operating temperature is lower and where, of garlic Their, these pallets come into contact with the atmospheric air drawn into them at its usual temperature, which further contributes to cooling these pallets.
However, the more moderate temperature regime of the machine has favorable repercussions on lubrication, expansion, choice of materials and many other factors involved in construction.
It should be noted that in the example shown, the lateral sealing of the working chambers 5 -and 5 'is ensured by simple annular parts 63 housed in the lateral flanges 3 -of the stator and pressed by -res sorts 64 against the flat sides of the rotor 1.
Peripheral sealing is sufficiently ensured by the vanes 7, offset with respect to each other, so that at least two consecutive vanes separate the exhaust port of a chamber from the orifice of admission of the other.
The compressor is also lubricated with the intervention of the central trifugal force developed by the rotation of the rotor. For this purpose, the lubricating oil supplied, under pressure in the duct 65 by an ad hoc means, such as a pump or a compressed air pressure which can be taken from the flow of the compressor itself, passes through a duct axial 56 provided in the rotor shaft, from where, driven by the, centri fuge force, it is directed by channels, such as the branches 57 made in the shaft and coinciding with channels 66 provided in the rotor 1 or by the games between the organs. towards the points to be lubricated.
The sealing strips 8 are further lubricated by conduits 37, connected to a source of pressurized lubricant and opening into the lateral flanges 3 of the stator at places in front of which pass, during the rotation of the rotor, the grooves of the pallets 7 containing the bars 8, so that at each turn of rotation, the oil is injected into these grooves, from where, under the effect of centrifugal force, it is driven along said bars to come to lubricate their ends and the wall 9 of the stator.
It goes without saying that the compressor can comprise a number of working chambers greater than two, so as to be able to increase the number of compression stages and, therefore, the final degree of compression.
Likewise, each compression stage can be formed by a series of chambers of equal capacity connected in parallel, which makes it possible to increase the flow rate of the compressor for the same degree of compression.
