Method and device for the production of oxidation-sensitive sintered bodies. The invention relates to a method and a device for the production of oxida tion-sensitive sintered bodies that may consist of metals, metalloids or alloys of such substances, wherein in general NEN is assumed from molded bodies that are made by pressing the powdery starting materials. Such bodies can consist, for example, of alloys of the metals aluminum, beryllium, silicon, titanium, zirconium, hafnium, chromium, vanadium, niobium and / or tantalum and metals of the iron group.
Of particular importance in this context is the production of permanent magnet alloys based on iron-nickel-aluminum and iron-nickel-titanium, with additions of other metals in the alloys may be present, such as cobalt or. Aluminum. Since the sensitivity of such substances to oxidation was known per se, it is already part of the prior art to sinter such bodies under protective gas, and hydrogen is generally used for this purpose.
It was already recognized that the protective gas had to be cleaned, and technically pure protective gas was therefore used, as can be achieved by a special cleaning process, in which impurities of any kind are eliminated by passing them through wax liquids. A drying of the protective gas used has already been seen.
It has been shown: that despite the use of a technically pure and dried protective gas, oxidation and thus deterioration of the sintered bodies produced cannot be prevented. This is apparently due to the fact that the gas, which has been purified, is contaminated again in the furnace, e.g. By reaction with the refractory lining of the furnace or the like.
The use of technically pure protective gas is also generally bound to discontinuous operation, because the risk of contamination, in particular due to oxygen, increases to a large extent in the moments when finished sintered bodies are removed from the furnace and untreated ones are inserted.
The purpose of the invention is to achieve an absolutely safe cleaning of the protective gas before it comes into contact with the material to be sintered, and the dangers that arise from continuous furnace operation should also be eliminated. This succeeds according to the method according to the present invention (inventors: Dr. phil. Werner Hotop and Dr. phil. Nat. Richard Kieffer, Reutte, TiroSl) if the protective gas supplied to the furnace, expediently in a technically pure form, is in the immediate vicinity the sintered material is cleaned by traps. Traps or getters are known in connection with the production of electrical discharge vessels and incandescent lamps.
They serve the purpose of removing the last remnants of undesired gases from completely sealed tubes or lamp bodies. In the tube industry, alloys are used as getter alloys that contain aluminum, calcium, stron tium, barium and / or magnesium. It is noteworthy that when suitable substances are used, it is now possible to produce the extraordinarily large gas residues in comparison to the gas residues absorbed by gettering in the pipe industry. Catch gas contamination from the gas that is constantly being supplied. Appropriately, as trapping substances, substances that are similar or identical to the sintered material are used in a powdered state. The melting point of these traps is conveniently higher than the sintering temperature of the material to be treated.
If, for example, the task is set to produce sintered bodies from an iron-nickel-titanium permanent magnet alloy or a permanent magnet alloy based on iron-nickel-titanium, then the catch material will consist of shredded scrap of such magnets. It does not matter whether the capture material has exactly the same composition as the sintered body in question, i.e. whether, for example, additions to other elements are present in one case and not in the other. It is also possible, for example, to treat a permanent magnet alloy of one type with a permanent magnet alloy of the other type as capture material.
This statement applies mutatis mutandis to the production of all oxidation-sensitive sintered bodies.
In order for the trapping material to remain effective, it is essential to prevent the powdery material from sticking together. This can be done by adding metal oxides to the powdery catch material, which have a sinter-inhibiting effect in a manner known per se. Zirconium oxide or aluminum oxide, for example, are suitable for this purpose.
To carry out the method according to the invention, it is proposed to provide boxes made of mild steel or pure iron for receiving the sintered material and the catch material. These boxes are zciweclunässigerweise loose and can be box-shaped, that is, a box can be used whose bottom part and top part have the same shape with raised edges, the lid fits into the bottom part with a small gap. The space between the edges of the lid and the bottom is filled with powdered catching material.
In order to prevent the powdery Mingstoff from being scattered when handling the boxes, the interlocking parts of the box can be closed - also loosely - by an additional lid. The protective gas that is fed into the furnace then passes through the joints of the loosely placed cover and is forced to flow through the layer of capture material before it reaches the samples to be sintered.
It has been shown that with this arrangement the cleaning of the protective gas by the capture material is so strong that it is unnecessary to clean the protective gas overhead, although of course the use of technically pure gas has the advantage of a longer duration Effectiveness of the catch material brings with it.
When using the sinter good in the sinter boxes, it has proven to be useful to fill the space within the box as much as possible with the bodies to be sintered, so that the smallest possible volume of air is present in the interior of the box. In the interior of the box, certain amounts of the catching material can also be provided, for example, to fill trainees the unused space by the inserted body or the like.
In the following, some results in the production of sintered bodies using the measure according to the invention are compared with results that are achieved using known means.
Example 1: Iron-nickel-aluminum magnets with the composition 13.5% aluminum, 27.6% nickel, the remainder iron in the cast and sintered state (sintering 2 hours at 1800) are compared with one another on a series of samples. The samples were sintered on the one hand in accordance with the invention and on the other hand under purified hydrogen in accordance with the prior art.

<tb> sintered <SEP> alloy A powdered iron-aluminum alloy with 15% aluminum was used as catching material. The superiority of the measure according to the invention can be seen. The values achieved practically correspond to those that are inherent in cast material.
Example 2: For special purposes, it is advisable to manufacture heating conductor alloys without sulfur, manganese, carbon, phosphorus and silicon impurities. Such alloys can be easily produced by sintering a mixture of carbonyl-iron powder and electrolyte-chromium powder. Under normal: purified hydrogen, such sintered alloys show greenish, finely distributed ogyd deposits.
According to the method according to the invention, completely sintered bodies free of sauer material flow by sintering for four hours at 1275 and pulling them down to form fine wire. An iron-aluminum alloy with 10% aluminum was used as the catch material. Example 3: Alloys containing niobium can usually only be produced in a vacuum in the desired purity, in particular free from oxides, carbides and nitrides.
Alloys of the composition 35% Wolfranm, 35% niobium, 30% cobalt and / or. Nickel has proven its worth. The sintering of such alloys could be carried out properly at temperatures of 1400 if the measure according to the invention was applied. An iron-niobium alloy with 905% iron and 10% niobium was used as catching material.
