Description

Welding electrode made of carbon with a reduced cross-section at the working end for resistance welding of thin sheets. The invention relates to a welding electrode for welding thin sheets, in particular special sheets for welding aluminum. It is known to make the welding of the like sheets with carbon electrodes, which are operated with low voltages of about 4 to ss volts and a current of 50 to 225 amps, so that no arc that can destroy the weld metal can form between the electrodes .

In this welding process, the necessary welding heat is essentially generated in the electrode itself, since the resistance of the sheets to be welded is small in relation to the resistance of the semiconductor electrode. The previously used carbon electrodes, which are inclined to one another for the continuous welding of sheet metal seams and must have a cutting edge so that the local cross-sectional reduction increases the resistance and thus the heat development at the welding point,

must be constantly re-ground as a result of the burn-off that occurs, so that long weld seams cannot be drawn in one operation.

Attempts have already been made to use another electrode material, for example silicon carbide, in place of carbon in order to reduce the wear on the electrodes. The silicon carbide electrodes easily lead to overheating of the welding point due to the larger negative temperature coefficient, so that such electrodes are unsuitable for practical use. Come in addition,

that, in view of their greater resistance, these electrodes require a higher operating voltage and thus there is a risk of bowing.

The invention enables the production of an erosion-proof welding electrode which is characterized by a dense and smooth surface and which is similar in its electrical resistance to the previous carbon electrodes.

This is achieved according to the invention in that the annealed electrode formed from carbon and the addition of binders is provided with a dense, metallically enriched silicon carbide which is produced by embedding the electrode in a silicon-containing mixture with subsequent annealing treatment.

In the accompanying drawing an embodiment of the invention is shown. The carbon core of the electrode is labeled 1, which is enclosed by the silicon carbide cover 2. This coating 2 is compressed at the end claimed below by metallic enrichment of the silicon carbide.

At the head end of the electrode, the carbon core 1 is exposed. At this point, the power supply member 4 is arranged on the electrode, which can be designed in a manner similar to the power connection in carbon brushes.

As is well known, the connecting strand of both carbon brushes is occupied in an opening of the carbon brush and brought into intimate contact with the carbon body by tamping in the metal powder and carbon mass. The electrode is held in the usual way by a holder 3, which can simultaneously serve as a power connection orga, and in this case is connected to the conductor 4.

The holder can be designed so that the upper end of the electrode and the electrode holder can be cooled by water at the same time.
