Alkyl- gruppen verschiedene Struktur besitzen.

Process for the preparation of an alkyl-phenol condensation product. It has been found that mixtures of alkyl phenol condensation products can be obtained by halogenating petroleum distillates, preferably those consisting predominantly of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, by condensing the halogenated products formed or selected fractions of the same with phenol or homologues thereof , and that these condensation products can be used with advantage for a wide variety of purposes.
For example, it has been shown that by chlorinating a petroleum distillate, such as kerosene, liquid petroleum and the like, and by condensing the chlorination product with an aromatic oxy compound of the benzene series, such as phenol, cresol, chlorophenol, salicylic acid and Like, compounds can be obtained that can be used with advantage as intermediates for the production of sulfonation products, which valuable network, cleaning,
Emulsifying agents and the like represent. In addition to this use as intermediate products for the production of sulfonation products, the mixtures of alkyl-phenol-condensation products can also be used as cleaning agents themselves, for example in the form of alcohol-water solutions which contain caustic alkali. Furthermore, they can be used as an agent for controlling all kinds of pests such as insects, bacteria, vermin and the like.
They can also be used as wetting agents in connection with emulsifying agents, as auxiliaries in the production of emulsions, as solvents, as intermediates for the production of resins of all kinds, in which phenols are brought into action on different types of resin-forming substances , also as a plasticizer for resinous products, for plastic cellulose masses,
as well as for other artificial or natural plastic masses, and finally also as intermediates for the production of azo dyes, for example azo dyes, which are soluble in organic solvents and can be used advantageously for coloring cellulose ethers and esters, etc.
As is well known, petroleum distillates are mainly mixtures of aliphatic hydrocarbons, which contain both saturated acyclic aliphatic hydrocarbons with a straight or branched carbon chain and cyclic aliphatic hydrocarbons, as well as a certain amount of unsaturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, depending on the type of petroleum in question, and the Type of distillation respectively. Refinement of the same.
The petroleum distillates which can be used for the condensation with phenols, however, consist mainly and predominantly of saturated acyclic aliphatic hydrocarbons. If such a Destil ':
late are halogenated, mixtures of various halogen derivatives of the aliphatic hydrocarbons mentioned are formed, which are referred to below as alkyl haloids for short.
If these mixtures of alkyl haloids are condensed with a phenol, the result is alkyl-phenol condensation products of the general formula, AHR, in which A denotes an aromatic nucleus which can contain substituents, while H an oxy group bonded to the nucleus and R an Al bound to the core:
means kyl group. which contains a relatively large number of carbons Z, where the alkyl groups denoted by R correspond to the aliphatic hydrocarbons of the petroleum distillate used to produce the condensation product.
If a petroleum distillate of the type described above is subjected to talogenation, halogen atoms are introduced in various amounts into aliphatic hydrocarbon atoms of various structures, namely in various places:
ungenerations within carbon molecules of the same structure. If a mixture of the above-mentioned Alkjrilhaloi.de is condensed with a phenol, Lso is also formed when the,
the same starting hydrocarbon is a mixture of core alkylated phenolic compounds of different structure with regard to the arrangement of the alkyl groups in the finished compounds. Mixtures of alkyl-phenal compounds of the general formula AHR are thus obtained. in which those denoted by R.
Alkyl groups have different structures. It has been found that the mixtures of Al-Iky: l-Phenälverbindungen .this type the alkyl: -Phenol: compounds with only one and the same A, lkyq group are superior for some purposes if they are equivalent Quantities are applied.
Since the products described can be produced from easily accessible raw material by means of a relatively simple and direct process, their production on an industrial scale does not encounter any economic difficulties.
A, alkyl @ phenol compounds of the general formula AHR can be prepared from petroleum distillates, which mainly consist of saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons, and at temperatures between 215 ° C (under atmospheric pressure) and <B> 380 '< / B> C (under a pressure of 50 mm)
boil and which generally contain no fewer than 121 and no more than 35 carbon atoms in the ad'kyl group R. As already stated, they can be used for a wide variety of purposes,
in particular as intermediate products in the manufacture of su ionization products with particularly high cleaning power and emulsifying effect. In particular, however, are mixtures of alkyl-phenol compounds obtained from petroleum distillates, which are predominantly made from saturated aliphatic hydrocarbons with 12 to 23, or even better,
with 14 to 19 carbon atoms per mole of oil, of particular technical interest. Among these there are in turn those connections respectively. Mixtures of compounds obtainable from petroleum distillates whose boiling point is between:
Near 215 ° C (under atmospheric pressure) and 260 C (at 50 mm pressure, which corresponds to an approximate boiling point of 370 ° C at atmospheric pressure), and of which one can assume that they are in the alkyl group about 12 to :
2 carbon atoms, but preferably those which differ from petroleum distillates with a boiling point between about <B> 235 '</B> C (at atmospheric pressure) to. about <B> 215 '</B> C (at 50 mm pressure, which corresponds to a boiling point of 32.0e C at atmospheric pressure) and most likely, anyway. 14 to. A contains carbon atoms in the alkyl groups R, which are particularly suitable for practical use.
The subject of the present invention is a process for the production of an alkyl-phenol'-Kon.densati: onsp: rodluktes, which is characterized in that chlorine is allowed to act on a petroleum cumdes @ illate, which under atmospheric pressure at least for the most part between <B> 225 '</B> C and <B> 275' </B> C boil until a chlorination product i is formed, the content of bound chlorine from 20 to
Is 27% and this chlorination product is condensed with phenol. In this way, a mixture of alkyl phenol, alkyl condensation products is obtained.
In the following examples, all parts are parts by weight and the pressure is always atmospheric pressure, unless otherwise stated.
<I> s example Z: </I> In 400 parts of a kerosene that is from about <B> 195 '</B> C to about <B> 300' </B> C, but the main thing is from 2, Boils 25 to 275 ° C, has a specific gravity of 0.799 at 24 ° C, contains about 5.6% unsaturated hydrocarbons and. probably a coal:
st @ off has 11 to 18 carbon atoms, contains on average about 13.4 carbon atoms, chlorine is introduced at <B> 50.degree. C. in diffuse light until the weight is increased by 111 parts has taken, of which 2 parts fall on dissolved hydrogen chloride.
The resulting product, which: has a chlorine content of about <B> 21.9% </B>, contains non-chlorinated hydrocarbons mixed with mono-, di- and polychlorinated hydrocarbons, whereby the:
average chlorine content of the, mixture, equivalent is about 11/2 chlorine atoms per. Hydrocarbon molecule, 'with:
the specified carbon content. 150 parts of this malloated mixture are then added, with stirring, to a mixture of 2100 parts of phenol and 5 parts of anhydrous zinc chloride at <B> 75 '</B> C and the temperature mentioned is maintained for about 30 minutes,
after the whole chlo @ riar mixture has been added. The temperature of the mixture is then increased and Tang is kept at 13.5 ° C for 21/2 hours. Then 5 parts of zinc dust are added and:
After a further hour, add 5 parts of zinc dust again, the temperature being kept at <B> 135 '</B> C for 3 hours during this addition and also afterwards. <B> You </B> React - the mixture is then cooled, treated with water,: the 011 is separated from the water, also from the excess zinc dust, and:
last fractionally distilled. The fraction between- 'see 140 and <B> 250' </B> C will pass over at 4 mm pressure! caught separately.
It consists of a mixture of saturated and unsaturated alkyl-phenols and chloro-alkyl-phenols, the alkyl groups of which probably have an average content of around 13 carbon atoms.
Example <I> 2: </I> 150 parts of the! Chlorinated hydrocarbon product, prepared according to Example 1, 150 parts of phenol, 130 parts of anhydrous zinc oxide and 10 parts of tetrachloroethane are heated for 31/2 hours to 140 to .150 ° C. while stirring on a flow cooler, whereupon, after this :
dile reaction already 2 hours. was in progress, nachmails f0 parts of tetrachloroethane added. The oily reaction mixture is poured off from the zinc chloride, washed with 10% hydrochloric acid and fractionally distilled in vacuo. The part of the distillate which passes from 180 to 240 ° C. at a pressure of 10 mm is collected separately.
It consists of a mixture of alkyl-phenols, the alkyl groups of which probably have an average content of 13 carbon atoms.
As a raw material for the petroleum fraction used according to the invention are particularly suitable the kerosene fractions, which are available from paraffinic or asphaltic earths, such as from Pennsylvania, Texas or Oklahoma petroleum, with those from Pennsylvania Petroleum, originate,
are particularly preferable.
The chlorination of the petroleum hydrocarbons can be carried out in any known manner. The degree of chlorination can be determined by the increase in the weight of the chlorinated hydrocarbon material or by the increase in the specific gravity of the mixture. Different chlorination temperatures can be used, for example temperatures from 0 ° C. to 70 ° C., but preferably temperatures in the vicinity of 50 ° C.
If desired or necessary, the chlorination can be carried out with the aid of chlorine carriers, catalysts or other auxiliaries, such as phosphorus trichloride, iodine, sunlight, etc., for example.
The condensation of the chlorinated hydrocarbon: with the phenol can also be carried out with the help of other condensation agents than zinc chloride. For example, metals such as zinc or iron, other metal halide compounds such as anhydrous aluminum chloride, anhydrous ferric chloride, etc. are suitable.
In general, however, is used as a condensation agent. Preferably anhydrous zinc chloride is used because, by and large, this provides a more uniform product and a better yield. The amount of condensing agent used can vary within wide limits.
For example, when using anhydrous zinc chloride as a condensing agent, this can in certain cases be used in amounts of only 1%, in others, however, in amounts of 5 big 10 of the weight of the chlorinated hydrocarbon. The condensation reaction can be carried out at any suitable temperature.
However, if zinc chloride. is used as a condensing agent, temperatures between 60 and about 180 ° C are usually preferred. The duration of the condensation treatment can also be varied, since the specific condensation period depends to a certain extent on the particular con - densationst @ emperatur,
also on the special condensing agents and the nature of the desired product. The condensation is usually complete in about 1 hour at reflux temperature (for phenol about <B> 170 '</B> C), or in about 3 to 6 hours at a temperature of <B> 135' </B> C, if a metal halide compound is used as a condensation agent.
When using waso, delighted zinc chloride as a condensation agent, the heating time can be extended to 16 hours or more without seriously affecting the quality of the condensation product. the yield thereof would be reduced.
The alkyl phenol condensation products obtained can be purified by fractional distillation or by steam distillation or in another suitable manner.
The product obtained according to the invention is an oily liquid which is soluble in water and water-alcohol mixtures. It. consists of a mixture of alkyl phenols, the alkyl groups of which correspond to those of the hydrocarbons of the petroleum distillate used.
