Process for tanning animal hides. The hydrogyl group-containing synthetic tannins give like the vegetabili rule tannins with ferric chloride solution or a dark color. Precipitation. For this reason, it is to be expected that, like the vegetable tanning agents, iron leather will be retanned dark and discolored. This is actually the case with synthetic tanning agents which only develop their full tanning effect in the form of the free sulfonic acid and are therefore also marketed in this form.
These are the products as they are, for example, according to D. R. P. No. 262558 from phenol or cresol sulfonic acid and formaldehyde he keeps.
It has now been found that, in contrast to this, those synthetic tanning substances which, as neutral salts, if necessary after adding weak organic acids, are well tanned and are consequently also marketed in this form, do not do so. On the contrary, some of these products improve the beautiful color of iron-cooked leather. Compared to pure iron tanning, the present process offers the advantage that leather of much higher quality is achieved which, in contrast to iron leather, can also be greased in the usual way with the usual fatliquors and dressed as usual.
In comparison to purely synthetic tanning, it should be mentioned that only a fraction of the otherwise required amount of tanning agent can be used for thorough tanning. If a slight discoloration occurs during tanning, which should not normally occur, this is because the iron leather was not sufficiently deacidified. In such cases, the addition of salts of weak organic acids, such as sodium acetate, restores the beautiful color.
It has proven to be most advantageous to use products as obtained from the sulfonic acids of aromatic hydrocarbons, formaldehyde and unsulfated dioxydiarylsulfones according to Swiss patents No. 156126, 158723 and 158724. But products such as those obtained from Swiss Patent No. 177474 can also be used. as well as products that can be made from novolak if you only sulphate to such an extent that the sulphonic acids also tan well with a weak organic acidity.
Such resin sulfonic acids are obtained. you can easily follow wio: 100 parts of phenol and 50 parts of 30% formaldehyde are mixed with 30 parts of monohydrate in the cold, then for a short time. heated to <B> 70-80 '</B>. The product is dehydrated in vacuo and then heated to 100 until water solubility has occurred. The sulphonation product is dissolved in water, neutralized with lye, silted slightly with acetic acid and made up to 300 parts with water.
EXAMPLE: Skins that are tanned or tanned, folded and de-acidified with iron salts are treated in the barrel as follows with the tanning agent according to Swiss Patent No. 156126:
EMI0002.0018
50-100 <SEP>% <SEP> water <SEP> 20 <SEP> <B> 0 </B> <SEP> C
<tb> 30 <SEP>% <SEP> tanning agent <SEP> duration <SEP> 6-8 <SEP> hours. You can leave the skins in the barrel overnight, but you can also beat them on the goat. It is then washed well with 30 C water and greased as follows:
EMI0002.0019
4-8 <SEP>% <SEP> sulf. <SEP> neat oil
<tb> 1-2 <SEP>% <SEP> soap <SEP> duration <SEP> 1-2 <SEP> hours.
<tb> 100% <SEP> water <SEP> 50 <SEP> <SEP> C Then you hit the skins, the buck.
Let it hang for a few hours, stretch out well on the scar, dry at a moderate temperature, if possible not above 30 C and then prepare in the usual way.
The percentages relate to the folded weight.
Instead of the above-mentioned tanning agent, another one that tans in a neutral or organic acidic solution can also be used, for example a tanning agent according to Swiss patent specification No. 177474 or a neutralized novolak sulfonic acid manufactured as described above, etc. </B>
