A titre d'exemple, certaines formes d'exé cution de l'objet de l'invention sont décrites ci-après avec référence aux dessins schémati ques annexés, dans lesquels: Fig. 1 est une vue fragmentaire en coupe suivant l'axe d'un cylindre d'un moteur sui vant l'invention; Fig. 2 est une vue partielle en coupe transversale d'un tel moteur;
Combustion engine. The invention relates to engines. fuel injection and thermo-pneumatic ignition, although it also finds application in electric ignition engines.
In the engine according to the invention, the main part, by volume, of the combustion chamber comprising several compartments interconnected, at least one of which is located outside the cylinder, is located above the piston, and The fuel is injected in its liquid form into the various parts of the combustion chamber, in quantities proportional to the volume of each of these parts.
This fuel supply mode, according to which each of the compartments receives the proportional dose of fuel due to it, makes it possible to influence with maximum precision and efficiency. con judging of combustions in the various spaces. In addition, as said main part of the combustion chamber is located above the piston, a large amount of fluid acts directly on it. For all these reasons, high effective average pressures will be obtained.
By way of example, certain embodiments of the object of the invention are described below with reference to the appended schematic drawings, in which: FIG. 1 is a fragmentary sectional view along the axis of a cylinder of an engine according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a partial cross-sectional view of such an engine;
Fig. 8 is an axial sectional view of another embodiment; Fig. 4, 5 show views in elevation, and fig. 6 a sectional view of a device which can be arranged in the passage interconnecting the compartments of the combustion chamber, and FIG. 7 and 8 show fragmentary views in axial section of two other variant embodiments of the following motor. the in vention.
In the example shown in fig. 1 and 2. the combustion chamber comprises the main compartment l., An auxiliary compartment 2, a channel 3 connecting these two compartments, and a space 4 determined by the clearance left between the bottom of the cylinder head 5 and the bottom 6 when the latter is at top dead center. The compartment 2 advantageously has the shape of a sphere into which the channel 3 opens out tangentially.
Chamber 1 can be formed. by a recess. piston and, as shown in fi-. 2, it can advantageously be subdi referred to in two compartments 11 and 12 cut symmetrically. dan: the piston and separated by a rib 7 located opposite the channel 3. This conformation of the chamber 1 gives rise to effective turbulence. Chamber 1 can also be cut from the cylinder head itself and in this case the piston. has a completely flat bottom.
As shown in fig. 2. the injection of the fuel can, for example, be carried out in a simple and rational way by a single injector 10 placed towards the periphery of the cylinder in the immediate vicinity of the channel 3. that is to say opening at the bifurcation of the three main compartments and providing three jets, two of which feed compartments 11 and 12, while the third is directed into compartment 2 through channel 3.
The doses of fuel injected into the various compartments are proportional to the volumes of these compartments. So, in round numbers, yes. the auxiliary sphere and its channel represent approximately one third of the total volume of the combustion chamber, and if compartments 11 and 12 have equal volumes, each of the three jets delivered by the injector 10 must represent one third of the total dose of fuel injected per work cycle.
The fuel injection can also, for example, be carried out by an injector such as 10, but with two jets only for supplying the compartments 11 and 12, while a second injector 9, shown in phantom in the figure. fig. 1, delivers the appropriate dose of fuel into the auxiliary chamber 2.
In all cases. thanks to the direct injection of liquid fuel in all the main compartments, the fuel. comes into contact with a maximum quantity of air, which favors the performance of the machine, facilitates cold starting and ensures intensive ignition in all operating conditions.
This arrangement of the injector (s) completely outside the field of the valves makes it possible to give the latter large diameters and to cool their housing abundantly, which results in an excellent volumetric efficiency of the machine, even at very large. speed, while allowing. in addition the construction of a very resistant cylinder head. This arrangement further allows the use of four valves, and of a maximum diameter if desired, which is found to be im possible in other systems.
In addition, it should be noted that no injector is located in channel 3. The latter is therefore not completely blocked, while the injector is outside the direct flow of gases.
The cooling can be provided by the usual means, for example by circulating water in the chamber 13. In the case of engines of the Diesel type, the walls of the auxiliary chamber 2 may favorably not be directly affected by the fluid. refrigerant. In the case of electrically ignited engines, chamber 2 can be directly cooled and can carry the electric ignition device.
Injection into the various compartments can be done simultaneously or with a certain delay from one compartment to the other. In all cases, the combined combustions in the various compartments result in high average effective pressures with moderate maximum pressures of the working cycle. In addition, the lighting times are reduced due to the fact that, at the moment. combustion, the various compartments contain highly heated turbulent fluids. The channel 3 is shaped so as to promote turbulence, its shape ensuring in particular that the fluids leaving the compartment 2 determine the desired vortices in the main combustion chamber above the piston.
This channel can, for example, affect the shape of a venturi.
Advantageously, this channel 3 has a narrowed section opening directly into the main compartment 1. It is possible in particular to place in the channel 3, as is shown for example in FIG. 3, a part 14 in the form of a bowl, the bottom of which is located in the immediate vicinity of the chamber 1 and is pierced by a.hole 15. At the start of the driving stroke, it is fluids in combustion and at high temperature which come out. of the auxiliary room. It is therefore advantageous to divert these fluids and to move them away for the most part from the nose of the injector 10.
It is therefore favorable to provide, in addition to the hole 15 for the fuel jet, one or more steps 16, 1.7, 18 (Fig. 4) or windows 19 (Fig. 5) intended to operate this deflection of the fluids. With this in mind, the hole 16 can, for example, be inclined downwards, as shown in FIG. 6; likewise, the opening 15 can be inclined downwards. The shape and dimensions of these passages will be determined according to the shape and volumes of the various compartments of the combustion chamber.
The chamber 2 could even be brought closer to the chamber 1, so that the aforesaid passage (s) can be drilled in its own wall, as shown, for example, in FIG. 8.
It should be noted that the position of the smallest passage section establishing communication between the various compartments, as well as the subdivision of this section, make it possible to obtain a better adjustment of the dynamic actions which must be exerted for to achieve in a rational way the combination of combustions occurring in the various compartments. The intermediate part 14 constitutes, after all, a device for adjusting the turbulence and, ultimately, the combustion itself. The choice of dimensions,
shapes and orientations of the wise passage openings establishing communication between the various compartments of the combustion chamber, makes it possible to modify the operating diagram of the machine according to the desire of the manufacturer, and in particular makes it possible to produce mixed diagrams in which part of the injected fuel is burned at constant volume and the other part at constant pressure, or else in Diesel diagrams, with combustion taking place practically, as a whole, under constant pressure.
The realization according to fig. 7 can be favorably applied to two-stroke engines. The chamber 1 can be constituted by a spherical space formed partially in the piston 6a and partially in the cylinder head 5a. A similar arrangement could be applied to four-stroke engines, the spherical chambers then being placed laterally outside the field of the valves, the cylinder head chamber 5a being in particular provided towards the periphery of the piston.
The single injector 10 may, for example, be two-jet and, if spaces 2 and 3 have about one-third of the total volume of the combustion chamber, the jet inserted into the auxiliary chamber must have one-third of the volume. global dose of fuel injected per work cycle, while the second jet will deliver two-thirds of this global dose. Instead of the single injector 10, two separate injectors could be used for chambers 1 and 2.
In the example shown in fig. 8, the combustion chamber comprises the main compartment 1, the auxiliary compartment 2, and a space 4 determined by the clearance left between the bottom of the cylinder head 5 and the piston 6 when the latter is at top dead center. An -injector 10 opens into compartment 1, in the immediate vicinity of compartment 2 and directly supplies these two compartments with fuel in its liquid form.
The chambers 1 and 2 communicate by means of one or more passages 15, 16, the opening 15 providing passage to the fuel jet intended for the chamber 2.
This chamber 2 is brought closer to the chamber 1, so that said communication passages 15, 1.6 are drilled directly into the partition separating these two chambers. This law is formed by the part 23, in the form of a double bowl, fixed in a hollow of the cylinder head 5 and partly delimiting the space 1, the other part of which is formed directly in the cylinder head. The chamber 2 is delimited in part by the part 23 and in part by a part in the form of a bowl 24.
Parts 23 and 24 are held in the yoke by means of a flange 25 which may have any suitable shape and is suitably secured to the yoke. Gaskets such as 26 and 27 ensure the tightness of the assembly. On the other hand, the clearances left at 28 and 29 allow the free expansion of the parts. In addition, the flange 25 bears on a circular base located on the base of the bowl 24 and leaves a clearance 30 between it and this bowl. In this way, it can also expand freely upwards. In addition, the chamber 30 thus formed determines an air mass, so as to maintain the walls of the bowl 24 at high temperature.
This arrangement greatly simplifies the machining, assembly and maintenance of the various organs housed in the cylinder head.
It suits. note that the chamber 1 communicates with the cylinder by a very wide section. while communicating with the. bedroom ? by very small sections. During the compression, vortices will therefore occur in chamber 1 at low speed following the direction of the arrows f 1 and f 2, while in chamber 2, a high speed rotating vortex will occur.
Towards the end of the compression, the air held in the space 4 between the bottom of the cup 5 and the bottom of the piston 6 gives a horizontal bellows blow which abuts on the vertical wall 31 and is thus transferred upwards in the direction of the vortex f 2.
At the moment of ignition, the fluids coming from chamber 2 pass through opening 15 and accelerate the vortex created by the movements following the arrows f 1 and f 2 < / I> since these fluids arrive under high pressure in the direction of arrow f ,,.
In this way, there is a sort of progressive acceleration of the vortex movements in chamber 1.
It goes without saying that, without departing from the spirit of the invention, various constructive modifications could be made to the conformation and the arrangement of the various organs of the embodiments of the invention described by way of reference. example.
