Process for the preparation of a new nitrogen-containing organic compound. The present invention relates to the manufacture of a new nitrogen-containing organic compound, namely the stearyl ureidmethylpyridinium chloride of the formula CiRHss-C0-NH-CO-NH-CHz-N (Cä ffs) -Cl, by reacting stearylurea with formaldehyde and pyridine hydrochloride.
The new compound is a white, crystalline solid which easily dissolves in hot water to form solutions which foam when shaken. If these solutions are kept hot, the compound decomposes, a precipitate forms and the foaming power is lost.
The new compound is suitable for impregnating textile materials to make them water-repellent.
The reaction is conveniently in .Abesenheit of water and preferably in the presence of an inert diluent, such as. B. benzene, ethylene dichloride or pyridine. It is particularly advantageous to prepare the pyridine salt in the container in which its reaction with stearylurea and formaldehyde is carried out by using a considerable excess of pyridine which then remains in the reaction mixture to serve as a diluent.
The formaldehyde is conveniently in the form of a polymer, such as. B. paraformaldehyde or trioxymethylene introduced into the reaction mixture.
Example: 11 parts of dry hydrogen chloride make 130. Share pyridine added. 7.5 parts of paraformaldehyde and 138.5 parts of stearylurate are then added and the mixture is stirred and heated to 70 to 75 ° C. until, after about 18 hours, a sample dissolves completely in hot water. The mixture is then cooled and acetone is added, with stearylureidmethylpyridinium arylide being precipitated in the form of colorless crystals. These are filtered off, washed with acetone and dried.
