Device to compensate for film shrinkage. The invention of Heinz Lehmberg, Dipl.-Ing., Berlin-Charlottenburg, aims to compensate for film shrinkage without slipping, especially in sound and picture sound films.
As is known, film tapes are subject to a change in length over time, in particular a special shortening, which is known under the name of film shrinkage. This shrinkage of the film has the consequence that older film tapes are shorter than fresh film tapes, the size of which can vary between a fraction of a percent and a few percent.
When a sound film is played back, the pitch of the playback depends immediately on the length of the carrier supported by the second. It can be seen that if a standardized playback speed is used as the basis, the recording content per unit length of the carrier must be strictly adhered to both during recording and when copying.
If now such, with sound recordings ver provided film is shorter over time due to shrinkage, the sound will increase in the playback of this film in proportion to the shrinkage if a constant drive device and a constant speed of the film is worked . Such a slight change in pitch can be of no significance in cases in which it is only a matter of pure sound films without any connection with other recordings.
In such cases, however, in which the sound recording has a certain relationship to other recordings, for example when a synchronous sequence of image and sound recordings is required, it is not the length of the film that is running second that is decisive, but the recording content that is running at the moment. For this reason, the film strips are provided with rows of perforation holes, so that constant conveyance of the recording content is guaranteed when conveying by means of toothed drums. It does not matter whether the film has changed its length due to shrinkage or not.
If the .Mass of the toothed drum are dimensioned so that they fit exactly for an unshrunk, fresh film, then a shrunk film is not moved steadily when conveyed through the same toothed drum, but moves jerkily according to the number of teeth, since each tooth when engaging in the associated perforation hole jerks the film strip by the amount of shrinkage. Such jerky promotion has the major disadvantage in sound films that the frequency of the discontinuous movement during playback in the form of a superimposed interference frequency becomes audible.
It must therefore be stipulated that sound films should be continuously drawn as they proceed: absolutely uniformly without being pushed through the devices concerned. This requirement is particularly important and must be met quickly in the case of sound film copiers, since a fresh, unshrunk film strip, the Iiopiefilin, is always in there with an older, more or less shrunk film strip, the negative film the same device must be promoted.
For the reasons outlined above, a sound film is not promoted by toothed drums, but by smooth rollers at the exposure and scanning point. Behind bez,% v, in front of this smooth conveyor roller, toothed drums are arranged in the film path, which ensure the correct synchronous sequence of the film belt. The condition must now be met that any jerky movements of the film strip that occur are not transferred from the toothed drum to the exposure roller.
Various methods have been given for this purpose.
It was based on the point of view that a film strip is only conveyed with complete accuracy in accordance with its length when the smooth conveyor roller engaging by friction engages a surface of the stretched film strip.
If, on the other hand, the film strip is curved, the concave film area is shortened by a small amount compared to the average film length, while the convex film surface is stretched slightly compared to the average film length.
Depending on whether the conveying roller engages the concave or convex surface, the conveying speed can therefore be reduced or increased by a small amount compared to the mean CT speed.
This fact has already been made use of in film copying machines: depending on the shrinkage value of a film strip, a conveyor roller with a smaller or larger diameter was used. The shrunk (negative) film was placed directly around the roll, while the originally shrunk (positive) film came to lie on the negative film.
Simultaneous feeding (by rubbing these two film strips) brought about an equalization of the different film lengths, since the unshrinkled, longer film was driven on its concave, i.e. shorter outer surface.
This method has the disadvantage that a special conveyor roller must be used for each shrinkage value, and that compensation only takes place for this one value of the shrinkage. An automatic compensation for a film in its various scripting stages is not carried out.
In order to avoid this layback, a film loop was also arranged in front of the smooth conveyor roller and the drum.
Depending on the conveying length of the film belt given by the toothed drum, the loop should take on a different shape, and the curvature present on the conveying roller should therefore be different. This should automatically lead to a slowing or decreasing conveyor speed at the exposure point.
In this known arrangement, a counter-pressure roller must be present, which presses the film strip against the smooth roller with relatively high pressure. The pressure of this pressure roller must be so great that slippage of the film strips against one another, which could easily occur as a result of the looping of the positive film, is absolutely avoided.
However, the use of high pressures when transporting film strips is undesirable, not only because of the mechanical stress on the film, but in particular because the emulsions of the highly sensitive films used today are extremely sensitive to pressure.
According to the invention, the advantage of a compensating film loop is now used without the need to apply strong pressure from the pressure roller to the smooth conveyor roller (exposure drum in copier machines or from scanning roller in reproducing machines). According to the invention, not only is a film loop arranged in front of the roll, but such a loop is also provided behind the same, both of which together give an S-shape. The respective shape of these loops depends on the difference in the length of the film conveyed on the smooth conveying roller and on the toothed unwinding and winding rollers.
In the drawing, an exemplary embodiment from the subject invention is shown schematically in the form of a copier.
The negative film 1, which usually has a greater or lesser degree of shrinkage, is conveyed by the toothed drum 2 and guided to the smooth exposure drum (conveyor roller) 3. After the film has passed the exposure drum, it is removed through a second toothed drum 6 and passed to the take-up roll. Between the loading roller 3 and the toothed drum 6, the movable roller 5 is arranged, which holds the film 1 due to spring tension or the like under the required tension. The movements of the roller 5 can be dampened by means known per se.
The positive film 7, which usually consists of fresh urigschrumpftem material, is also promoted by a toothed drum 8 ge and after the formation of a loose loop also the exposure drum 3 leads. After leaving the exposure roller, the film 7 again forms a loop and is then passed through the further serrated roller 9 to the take-up drum. Instead of two separate take-up rolls 6 and 9, a common roll could also be used.
At the exposure point, the two films are pressed by the pressure roller 4, which is under spring tension, against the exposure roller 3, so that the two film strips are passed over the exposure point without mutual slip. It can be seen from the drawing that the loops are created by the arrangement of the toothed conveyor rollers 8 and 9, and that the track points of the axes of these toothed rollers are approximately on a straight line with the track points of the axis of the smooth conveyor roller 3.
The compensation of the shrinkage proceeds as follows: Since the toothed drums 8 and 9 have a constant speed due to the fixed coupling with the drive mechanism, the film length they convey is dependent on the number of teeth respectively. Number of perforation holes.
If the promoted film 7, since it is supposed to be a originally shrunk film, has a greater film length than the shrunk film 1 for a certain number of perforations, the loop between the toothed drum 8 and the smooth exposure roller 3 will enlarge and take about the dot-dash position.
As a result of this enlargement of the loop, the film strip will cling more closely to the exposure roller, the radius of curvature will be smaller and, since the film is now being attacked on the concave surface, its secondly conveyed length will be greater. The increase in the conveying speed continues until a steady state is reached.
If the shrinkage of the negative tape 1 is now in the course of the copying process, in other words, if the length of the film tape is greater with respect to the same number of perforation holes, a greater length of the film tape 7 is also conveyed at the copying point. The left loop is shortened while the right loop is enlarged. The film tape 7 now forms a different curvature at the conveying point, the curvature can, as in the case shown, assume a convex shape. This, on the other hand, simultaneously reduces the speed of the film tape 7, as described above, until a steady state is reached again.
It can be seen that, depending on the degree of shrinkage, the conveyed film length is automatically compensated for at the exposure point by a corresponding design of the curvature of the film strip 7.
The loop in front of the exposure drum results in an S-shape with the one behind the exposure drum, in such a way that the sections of the film 7 in front of and behind the exposure roller run point-symmetrically or approximately point-symmetrically. Due to this symmetrical course of the film sections with respect to the exposure point, the one-sided print is be.zw. Train the film 7 is canceled at this point, and it is sufficient to apply a small pressure to the pressure roller 4 to achieve a slip-free promotion of the film strips.
It is advantageous to provide special guide pieces 10 which are arranged in the film path of the film that the two loops in front of and behind the exposure roller get the most favorable shape. By appropriate arrangement of these guide pieces, the symmetrical formation of the film is grind promoted.
It can be seen. that for each shrinkage value of the film 7 a certain. Shape of the loops. To enable the device to work properly and without slippage from the outset, and to prevent the correct shape of the loops only being formed after a long start-up time, the shrinkage value of the film tape to be inserted is expediently determined beforehand and the The film is inserted into the device from the outset in accordance with this shrinkage value.
Since a certain loop shape is associated with every shrinkage, it is advantageous to fix the respective shape of the loop on the device itself using templates or markings.
The invention is not limited to the described embodiment in film copying machines, but can be used wherever a regular sequence of several film strips is required. The invention can also be used with advantage in devices with individual film tapes, for example in recording or playback devices for sound films that have to be in a certain synchronism with other films, for example with picture films.
