Fixing device. The present invention relates to a positive fixing device comprising an automatic locking nut in which a bolt is screwed. This device can for example be used to fix an object to a panel, to a plate, and in this case arranged so that the nut is retained at the rear or on the inaccessible side of the plate or of the panel. This nut would thus function as a blind fastener.
The use of terminal fasteners, and more particularly of those which include self-locking nuts, has become very widespread in aircraft construction or similar forms of construction as well as in the mounting of instruments on panels or the like.
Frequently, it is necessary to have a relatively large number of individual fasteners to join two members; in aircraft construction for example, and dan? these kinds of construction, particularly in the mounting of instruments on panels, it is frequently necessary that these fasteners be positioned in a very precise manner.
In mounting instruments on panels, particularly in the case of aircraft instruments, it is often absolutely essential that the orientation of these instruments on the panel be extremely precise, an error in the position of two to five hundredths of a millimeter, for example, being sufficient to seriously alter the accuracy of certain precision instruments such as altimeters or similar devices.
Hitherto, such fastening devices have been produced comprising a blind fastening member by using riveted nuts, that is to say nuts comprising rods or equivalent parts which are introduced into drilled holes or stamped in one of the parts to be assembled,
for example in a plate or in a panel and due to the edge so as to fix the nuts permanently on this part.
In some cases, the panel or other member on which the riveted nuts are fixed can be relatively thick and in the case of such parts as well as in the case of parts where the fastening device consists of several bolts and nuts, we have. encountered difficulty in obtaining the desired degree of accuracy and alignment of the various riveted nuts with respect to the holes or other openings through which the bolts or screws which are to be screwed into these nuts, which must also be made with great precision.
The device according to the present invention a. for the purpose of remedying the drawbacks of the known devices indicated above. With the device according to the invention, it is possible, for example, to achieve with great precision the fixing of an instrument on a panel without it being necessary to align the fixing holes in this panel with the same degree of precision only if riveted nuts were used as mentioned. The use of the device according to the invention therefore makes it possible in this case to reduce the cost of manufacturing the panel.
The nut which the device according to the invention comprises could for example be an automatic locking nut of the type commonly called: elastic locking nut. These nuts are characterized by the presence, in their body of a part made of non-metallic material which is not threaded and in which a bolt or screw is screwed, this part cooperating with the thread of the bolt to prevent the nut from slipping. turn on this bolt. Such a type of nut is the subject of French patent C 590289 of December 10, 1924.
The appended drawing represents, by way of example, some embodiments of the device according to the invention.
The fi; -. 1 is a sectional view of a first embodiment of the device used for fixing an instrument on a panel. Fig. 2 is an end view, on a large scale, of the fastening device shown, c in FIG. 1.
Fig. 3 is a section through the cuvette of this device.
The fi-. 4 shows, in. section, a second embodiment of the device, serving to link two plates.
Fig. 5 is a partially sectional view of the sheath of a third embodiment of this fixing device.
Fig. 6 is a partially sectional view of the sheath <the fourth form. In fig. 1 to 3, denoted by 10, we see a sectional part of a panel on which or wants to mount an indicating instrument 50 exactly. 12 designates the front face of the panel and 14 designates the rear face thereof. The sign is. drilled the required number of holes, one of which is indicated at 16.
L: n sleeve, generally designated by 18, comprises a cylindrical rod 20 of circular annular section housed in the hole 16 and a cup 22 which receives the nut 24 with a certain radial play. The cup 22 is of corresponding hexagonal section. around the nut.
The free end of the rod 20 is riveted at. 26 against, the countersunk end 28 of the hole 16, so that the sleeve is rigidly fixed in the panel.
As shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 3, the side walls 30 of the bowl are made so that the distance measured internally and separating two faces of the hexagon is sufficiently greater than the flat diameter of the nut 24 so that a clearance appreciable 32 is kept between the faces of the nut and the walls of the bowl.
This clearance 32 is however too small to allow the rotation of the nut in the bowl. In order to retain the nut in the axial direction inside the bowl, this nut has a groove 34 on its periphery. Two fingers 36 are cut out of the metal constituting the walls of the bowl and are bent towards the side. inside.
We could only have one finger. As clearly shown in fig. 3, these fingers penetrate the groove 34 to retain the nut axially in the cup, while at the same time they allow free movement of the nut laterally with respect to the axis of the cup.
The fingers 36 are elastically deformable in order to allow the nut to be removed from the bowl.
The sheath is advantageously made of thin metal foil and, for aeronautical construction or such milar constructions, it is advantageously made of light metal such as aluminum or one of its alloys.
Such a metal has sufficient elasticity, so that the fingers are pushed into place when the nut has been introduced. Since the nut is relatively light, these fingers do not need to engage a noticeable amount in the groove to hold it, and the inherent elasticity of the metal allows the nuts to snap into place easily.
The clearance between the walls of the bowl and the nut allows the insertion of a thin blade or the like to push the fingers 36 outward by a sufficient amount to allow removal of the nut from the bowl. either to replace it, knows for another reason.
In the device shown in FIGS. 1 to 3, the nut is an automatic locking nut called elastic locking, of the type that is the subject of French patent No. 590289 cited above. In this nut, the hole is bored at 38 to receive a resilient, non-metallic piece 40 which is not threaded and in which the thread is formed when the corresponding bolt 42 is screwed into this nut. The bolt is thus effectively retained and unable to turn in the nut.
The bolt 42 passing through the rim 48 of the instrument 50 has a slotted head 44 countersunk at 46 to be housed in the corresponding milled part of the rim 48 of the instrument 50. The internal diameter of the rod 18 is slightly greater than diameter of the bolt 42 so as to leave a radial play 52. The instrument 50 is shown fixed to the panel 10 by two devices such as that which has just been described.
It is easy to see that, in this way, the instrument 50 can be very exactly mounted on the panel 10 after the latter has been placed in the construction of which it is a part, even if the face 14 of the panel is inaccessible after assembly.
It will of course be understood that the holes 16 are drilled and that the sleeves are put in place and fixed in the panel before the latter is mounted and as long as its rear part is accessible.
Therefore, when the panel is in the assembled position, the instrument can be mounted by inserting the bolts 42 from the front and tightening them so as to keep the instrument exactly in position, against any lateral displacement. , thanks to the friction between the face of; panel and the rear part of the instrument.
Although the holes 16 are not in their exact location or the panel itself is not in its exact location in the construction of which it is a part, the instrument can be reliably fixed on the panel in its precise position of the causes the nuts to have some radial play in the cups - and the bolt to pass through the hollow rod with play.
The value of the clearance required obviously varies for each particular assembly, but the centering of the holes is usually precise enough so that a relatively small clearance is sufficient for this purpose.
It is also not necessary to have an extreme precision for the centering of the thread in the nut, with respect to the circumference of the latter, as is the case for the riveted nuts that were used for perform precise edits.
The device of FIG. 4 is used for the assembly of thin plates similar for example to those found in the fuselage or the wings of airplanes. This device is analogous to that which has been described previously and it does not need to be repeated in detail. The sleeve of this embodiment comprises a cup 54 and a short hollow cylindrical rod 56 riveted to one of the plates 58,
the plate 60 being held on the latter by means of the bolt 6 \? through this plate and screwed into the self-locking nut 64.
The use of this device in constructions of this nature eliminates the need for the. high precision of the centering of the holes which must receive the fixing devices when the plates are assembled by means of a line of these devices. Even if there is a certain lack of coincidence, the bolts can still penetrate the nuts without there being any lateral force tending to force the bolts to engage obliquely in the threads, which is particularly advantageous since , with the elastic automatic locking nuts used in this device, it is preferable, from the point of view of. quality of retention of nuts. not to have a misalignment between the bolt and the nut hole.
On the. fig. 5, the sheath of another embodiment is shown. This sheath comprises a cup 66 having, as has been described above, fingers 36 located on opposite faces. The difference between this sheath and that of the device of FIG. 1 lies in the fact that the. exterior surface of the. Cylindrical hollow rod 68 is roughened so as to provide a friction holding surface to prevent it from rotating in its hole, 1a. rod being intended for. be engaged in a hole by a hard shank or the. hurry.
This roughness is advantageously obtained by knurling the outer surface. A sheath of this nature can advantageously be used in the case where the part which is to be traversed by the rod is so thick that this cylindrical rod should have too great a length to be able to be riveted as in the case of FIG. 1.
This sheath can also be used in the event that the. matter which constitutes the organism in. which the. rod is. fixed may be such that it may be economically desirable to secure the sleeve in its place by frictional contact by press or press rather than by riveting, thereby avoiding an operation.
The sheath of the fourth embodiment shown in FIG. 6 is intended to be fixed in a very thin plate. This sheath comprises a cup forming a shoulder at the location of its junction with the rod. The part 70 of the rod adjacent to the shoulder is tapered with its large base on the shoulder side and the rest of this rod is cylindrical.
In the drawing, this conical part is shown with an exaggerated degree of taper, the angle of the cone being in fact almost very small.
It has been found that when a sleeve of this nature is wedged or riveted in a thin plate, particularly a thin plate of relatively soft metal, significantly improved attachment of the sleeve is obtained which prevents it from rotating. This conical part forces the hole receiving the rod to expand laterally when the sleeve is fastened by riveting.
This lateral deformation of the walls of the hole ensures a very intense frictional contact on the rod of the sleeve, which strengthens the retention of the latter in order to prevent it from rotating.
