Description

Procedure for securing the operation of refrigeration machines. All refrigerants that consist of organic compounds with halogens have the disadvantage that they are all very sensitive to water, even if there are only traces of it.

Such refrigerants are for example: methyl chloride (CH, C1), ethyl chloride (C2H5C1), vinyl bromide (C2H, Br), dichlorodifluoromethane (C CI.F.), dichlorotetrafluoroethane (C1C12F4) and the like.

The water contained in such refrigerants causes the following disturbances, even if it is only a very small quantity: The water forms voluminous, solid hydrates with the refrigerant below 0 C, which only occur at temperatures of several degrees above 0 C disintegrate again into water and refrigerant. These hydrates clog the expansion nozzle of the refrigeration machine and cause operational problems as a result.

In addition, water acts as a catalyst at high compression temperatures, so that it causes decomposition of the refrigerants, with the formation of hydrogen halide acids, which corrode the metals, which also leads to operating faults.

In order to remedy these inconveniences, it has already been proposed to mix substances into the refrigeration which even contain traces of water that are still present. This enabled the formation of hydrates to be effectively prevented. However, the addition of the substances used up to now for this purpose has the disadvantage that they also promote the decomposition of the refrigerant.

According to the present invention, an ether is then mixed with halogen-containing refrigerants, for example dimethyl ether in a machine that is operated with dichlorodifluoromethane. Ethers are able to absorb the water still present in the refrigerant, so that hydrate formation is avoided. Furthermore, the chemical structure of the ethers is such that the halogen refrigerants are not set when mixed with them.
