On peut différencier trois natures de re trait: 1o Le retrait dû à la consolidation du gel colloïdal produit au moment de la prise et à la transformation progressive du système cristallin qui se stabilise, ce retrait est irré versible;
Ledit ciment à base de sulfoaluminate peut être obtenu par la clinkérisation d'un mélange de bauxite ou d'argile, de pierres à chaux et de sulfate de chaux; ces composés ne sont pas né cessairement gonflants par eux-mêmes, parce que, lorsqu'ils sont gâchés avec de l'eau, le sulfoaluminate cristallisé qui se forme se pro duit à partir des éléments préalablement dis sous;
Manufacturing process for hydraulic binders. Hydraulic binders and in particular cements undergo, after setting, and as the hardening and drying progresses, a certain shrinkage which requires precautions to limit the harmful manifestations thereof.
For this purpose, efforts are made to reduce the cracking and cracking of the plasters by the option of a particular granulation. For paving, large-scale work and road surfaces, contraction joints are provided.
In reinforced concrete constructions, the problem is compounded by the fact that the contraction of the concrete causes the reinforcement to compress. When a load is applied, the reinforcements can only act effectively after having been decompressed by the elongation of the concrete, which inevitably causes cracks in the tensile face of the latter. These few examples are sufficient to highlight the exceptional interest attached to the use of a cement without shrinkage, or even producing a desired and exactly proportioned elongation of mortars or concretes.
Such improvement has not escaped the notice of cement technicians, who for many years have directed their research in this direction. unfortunately, the solutions suggested so far have not met the hopes that incomplete and unstable results had given us a glimpse of.
We can differentiate three types of treatment: 1o The withdrawal due to the consolidation of the colloidal gel produced at the time of setting and the gradual transformation of the crystalline system which stabilizes, this withdrawal is irreversible;
The shrinkage due to changes in the hygrometric state of the conglomerate, this shrinkage is perfectly reversible; 3G Shrinkage due to a drop in temperature; in this case, the cement is simply subjected to the laws of general physics with a known and invariable coefficient of expansion or contraction.
Of these different withdrawals, the first only is likely to be canceled as will be indicated later.
The second obeyed. to the laws of capillary physics and can only be influenced by the degree of compactness of the mortar or concrete apart from their relative humidity.
The third completely escapes all remedy.
We already have. proposed, with a view to providing a solution to the problem of withdrawal, various means which are not entirely satisfactory and the main ones of which are indicated below with reference to FIGS. 1, 2 and 3 of the attached sin.
1Q Weight loss has been tried by introducing in the cement inert materials crushed to the fineness of the binder. The thinning, which has proven its relative effectiveness in the case where the binder is not crushed to a very great fineness, in the case of mortars and betvices, becomes inoperative in the case where the fineness of the binder is very high, case of cement (10 to 80 microns).
This is explained because these inert and fine grains exhibit phenomena of surface action on the mixing water just like the grains of cements and the total capillary tension is not modified.
The tests carried out as indicated below were carried out with test pieces having a section of 1 square centimeter and a length of ten centimeters, in the usual manner.
In fig. 1, the numbers of days are shown on the abscissa and the withdrawals in millimeters on the ordinate.
Curves 1, 2 and 3 represent respectively: the curve of a control artificial Portland cement; the curve for the same cement with the addition of 207, of crushed silica; the curve of the same cement with the addition of 20% crushed calcined clay.
The addition of water repellents, bitumen and hygroscopic salts has had its supporters. Theoretically at least, these incorporations should provide some attenuation of shrinkage, by reducing evaporation or by maintaining permanent humidity inside the concrete. With regard to hydrofuges and bitumen. one sometimes observes, in fact, during the first periods of hardening, a decrease in shrinkage but which is not maintained over time, and one only succeeds in delaying the development of the phenomenon.
In fig. 2, the numbers of days are shown on the abscissa and the withdrawals in millimeters on the ordinate.
Curves 4 and 5 represent respectively: the curve of the control cement; the curve of a cement with the addition of 2% water repellent.
In fig. 3, the numbers of days are shown on the abscissa and the withdrawals in millimeters on the ordinate.
Curves 4 and 6 respectively represent the curve of a control cement; the curve of a cement with the addition of 2% CaCl2.
The invention .gives a solution to the problem of shrinkage and relates to a method of manufacturing hydraulic binders with zero shrinkage starting from cements undergoing treatment after setting, such as Portland cements and the like, aluminous cements and slag, characterized by the addition to the cement of doses of between 10 and 50% of cement based on anhydrous sulfoaluminate, formed by the igneous route,
so as to compensate for the shrinkage of the hydraulic binder by a progressive swelling which is equal to or greater than it, exactly controlled and proportioned so as not to exceed, during the reaction, the elastic limit of the binder.
Said sulphoaluminate-based cement can be obtained by clinkering a mixture of bauxite or clay, limestone and lime sulphate; these compounds are not necessarily swelling by themselves, because, when they are mixed with water, the crystalline sulphoaluminate which forms is produced from the elements previously said under;
after their own setting process, their hydrolysis in the presence of water free from CaS04, in the nascent state, which acts afterwards on the hydrated aluminate which is formed by the setting of the basic Portland cement resulting in the formation of a swelling sulfoaluminate crystallizing with more water molecules.
The sulfoaluminate is. obtained by firing a mixture comprising, for example: 30% bauxite 30% calcium carbonate 40% gypsum.
The term “sulfoaluminate swelling” is understood to mean a hydraulic binder obtained according to the process indicated above but which, when tested alone to assess the stability, gives a swelling slightly exceeding that admitted by the specifications for the acceptance of cement.
It is in the interest of exaggerating the compensation beyond the needs of the irreversible shrinkage and of causing a certain expansion without exceeding the elastic limit of the concrete, so as to: 1o Have a margin of elongation. 20 Cause the reinforcements to be tensioned beforehand, a circumstance which is very favorable for the behavior of the reinforced concrete.
Fig. 4 shows, by way of example only of a composition, the result obtained on a pure paste of artificial Portland cement with an addition intentionally exaggerated to show the effectiveness of this addition and the stability of its effect over time.
Curves 7 and 8 respectively represent: the shrinkage curve of a control artificial cement; the elongation curve of a mixture comprising 80% of artificial cement and 20% of sulfoaluminate. On the abscissa, we plotted the number of days and on the ordinate, on either side of zero, in the upper part, the elongations in millimeters and in the lower part, the withdrawals in millimeters.
In practice, variable doses ranging from 15 to 20% of cement comprising sulfoaluminates are added to the Portland cement.
It is preferable to use anhydrous sulfoa.lumi- nates obtained by the igneous route according to French Patent No. 780747 dated January 22, 1934 in the name of the Applicant. In this case, in fact, each grain of the product introduced into the Portland cement is a complete compound containing all the elements contributing to the desired result, and the additions lead to disciplined, controlled and measured reactions. For the compensation of Portland cements, preference should be given to using sulfoaluminates rich in SO3 and with a low content of CaO.
For aluminous and slag cements, they can be added with swelling sulfoaluminates.
