Die Erfindung sei anhand dar Abbildun gen näher erläutert. Abb. 1 zeigt einen Längsschnitt eines elektrischen Entladungs gefässes einer ersten Ausführungsform der Erfindung; Abb. ? zeigt den magnetischen Teil des Entladungsgefässes nach Abb.l; Abb. 3 ist ein Grundriss der Abb. 2;
Bisher konnte man .solche Metalle wie Eisen und Nickel kaum verwenden, @da sie einen relativ niedrigen Schmelzpunkt besitzen., weswegen oft eine einzige Rückzündung ;
In.
In Abb.
Durch ,diese Einrich- tung wird erreicht, dass nach dem Einsetzen einer Rückzündung und nachdem der Magnet 64 eingeschaltet ist, der Lichtbogen: entge gengesetzt .dem Uhrz.eigersinne gemäss dem Pfeil A rotiert. Nrun kann der Bogen nur durch die offenen Löcher in den Schirmen;
Device to make reignitions in electrical discharge vessels harmless. Electrical discharge vessels that are used as rectifiers should only conduct the current in one direction, and that they should be current-impermeable during the times when the anode is negative. However, it often happens that flashback occurs for a variety of reasons; H. that the discharge vessel current is conductive when the anode is negative with respect to the cathoid.
In general, these reignitions are short-lived, no longer than. half a period. Sometimes, however, the flashback can develop into a prolonged one. This is caused by the fact that the current filament contracts and adheres to a narrow area of the anode surface.
The high level of heating at this point leads to evaporation of the anode material, which then acts like a cathode and in this way makes the discharge vessel current-permeable in both directions. This effect occurs particularly when the anodes are made of metal, since they have a fairly low vaporization temperature.
To avoid this phenomenon, they have recently been used by graphite anodes. An undesirable consequence of this exchange is the difficulty in degassing the graphite anodes during manufacture of the tubes, which is due to the porous structure of the graphite.
The present invention relates to a device for rendering backfires harmless. This is to be achieved in that the local heating of the anodes in the re-ignition period prevents the wind by moving the arc around the anode and thus reducing its thermal emissivity.
According to the invention, the device has a magnetic field which acts on the arc during the reignition period and causes it to circulate over the anode surface. Appropriately, the magnetic lines of force are perpendicular to the arc, so that the movement of the latter takes place according to the known right-hand rule of the electromagnetic field.
The invention will be explained in more detail with reference to the images. Fig. 1 shows a longitudinal section of an electrical discharge vessel of a first embodiment of the invention; Fig? shows the magnetic part of the discharge vessel according to Fig.l; Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 shows a modified version of the invention for a discharge vessel with Q, ueck- silver cathode; Fig. 5 shows the magnetic part of Fig. 4 in a perspective view. Figs. 6, 7, 8 and 9 show further embodiments of the invention.
Let us first consider Fig. 1. The discharge vessel has a melted-off shell 1 made of glass or some other insulating material. The insulating body 2, which is cylindrical in the lower part, contains a cathode 7 there, while the vessel at the upper end expands to form a ringför shaped chamber 3. This ringför shaped chamber 3 is in communication with. the cylindrical chamber? through the intermediate space 4.
The current is supplied to the cathode 7 via the pins 5 through fusions in the glass base B. The cathode 7 can be any desired hot cathode, e.g. B. a hollow cathode. Such cathodes are usually indirectly heated by a resistance wire which is arranged axially in the interior and is fed with current through two of the contacts 5.
In the annular chamber 3, an annular anode 10 is attached, which can be seen in cross section 111 Fig. 1, and which enables an external power connection through an inlet 1.1. To avoid eddy currents in the anode, it does not form a closed ring, but has either a slot or an intermediate piece filled with insulating material.
This design of the discharge space so that the discharge between the cathode 7 and anode 10 through the gap 4 hindu.rehwalk. Since tubes constructed in this way ignite poorly, an auxiliary electrode 13 can be arranged directly above the cathode and connected to the anode via a resistor 14.
With this arrangement, if there is a positive voltage at the anode, the discharge between cathode 7 and auxiliary anode 13 will start, whereupon the discharge will pass to the surface of main anode 10 due to the voltage drop across resistor 14.
In order to prevent flashback between anode and cathode in such a discharge tube, the arc is forced to move continuously along the inner surface 1, 2 of the main anode 10. In this way it will be impossible for a part of the anode surface to be heated to such an extent that: There is a thermal emission of electrons, and thus the ignition is initiated.
This is achieved by a magnetic field, which is arranged near the anode and ensures the rotation of the arc. According to FIG. 1, the magnetic field is generated by a coil 16 which is arranged concentrically to the anode 10. Let's assume,
da.ss the current flow through the coil corresponds to the small arrow B at the left end of the drawing, then the magnetic field generated by the coil is 1: 6. is the direction of the little arrows C at the top of the figure.
The part of this field that is effective in the space 4 is perpendicular to the arc and, in accordance with the right-hand rule, this causes a clockwise or counterclockwise rotation, depending on the direction, of the discharge current.
Since the arc moves very quickly (the speed increases with the current strength of the wire), it is obvious that the anode body is protected from overheating. If the coil 16 lents in series with the anode circuit (as shown, the speed of movement is dependent on the intensity of the reignition current.
This method of suppressing re-ignition eliminates the difficulties that until he restricted the selection of the anode material to graphite.
Up to now one could hardly use such metals as iron and nickel, @ since they have a relatively low melting point., Which is why often a single flashback;
enough to create a crater in the surface, which then acts slightly like a cathode.
When using a magnetic field; according to the present invention, however, it is possible to distribute the flashback current over such a large anode surface, i.e., evaporation is avoided even with metals with a very low melting point, and thus also,
these metals can be used as anode material. The present invention is important when the avoidance of graphite is necessary, such. B. in high-voltage tubes, in order to avoid the difficulties caused by gas outbreaks of the graphite.
Figs. 2 and 3 show the application of a stronger .magnetic field. The numbering of the parts corresponds to that of Fig. 1.
The electromagnet has an iron core, which has an extensive air gap parallel to the inner surface of the anode, and so that the field is concentrated in the space in front of the anode. In particular, the core contains a horseshoe 19, the poles of which are provided with annular projections 20, 2.1 and are arranged on opposite sides of the intermediate space 4.
The magnetic circuit is excited by a coil 22 which is wound around an arm of the horseshoe. In order to avoid eddy currents, the iron core pieces are made up of lamellas. which are as parallel as possible to the direction of the magnetic flux.
In some cases, especially in grid-controlled tubes, it is desirable to have a coupling between the magnetic field and the working group:
avoiding the tube if possible. In these cases, the magnetic field to suppress the re-ignition is only allowed to act when the re-ignition has really started.
For this purpose, a relay system can be attached which automatically energizes the coil 22 when a backfire occurs, either by connecting it to the anode circuit or by switching on a separate circuit.
In. Fig. 2: the circuit for the latter case is shown. The feed circuit for the coil 22 contains a battery 23 and a three-electrode hot cathode vessel 24 with negative characteristics. Normally, the grid 215 is negatively biased via the resistor 27 which is connected to the negative end of the grid battery 26.
The voltage divider 28 is used to regulate the sensitivity setting.
At insertion; In the event of a flashback, the polarized relay 29, which has a supply coil 29 ', which is in series with the main anode circuit and normally keeps the contacts 3,0 open, closes the latter. :
Of course, the relay 20 works at a particularly high speed. For this reason, it is often advisable to use an electron tube instead of a mechanical switch, as shown.
Through the closed. Contacts 30 is instantly the grid 25 verbun to the positive end of the grid battery 26, whereby the tube 24 is current-permeable. As a result, the supply coil 22 is supplied with power from the battery 2, 3 and a magnetic flux is generated in the iron core 19.
With a relay circuit, as it is described here, it is difficult to build up the magnetic field at such a speed as to produce a rotation of the flashback arc during the first half-wave.
If, however, the flashback continues over several successive half-waves, the arc will rotate in the manner described above and thus reliable extinction will take place. In order to switch off this mechanism after the flashback has gone out, a relay is connected in series with the coil 22, which holds a coil 31 which is bridged via the resistor 32.
The inductance of the coil 31 and the inertia of the mechanical parts are sufficiently large to delay the action of the switch arm 33 over more than half a period. So after a while. the switch is finally opened and the current flow through the tube 24 is interrupted. The arc is thereby extinguished and the contacts 30 are opened.
As a result, R low voltage is applied to the grid 25, so that the tube 21 is blocked even after the contacts 33 are closed. If the re-ignition has not yet gone out, the process described above is repeated.
In Fig. 1 a modified embodiment of the invention is shown, namely in its application to a discharge vessel with a mercury tube 35. Instead of the mercury filling, this can also be any other. Easily vaporizable substance obtained. A seal 37 is passed through the vessel 3,6. makes contact with the mercury cathode. To ignite the discharge, the auxiliary electrode 38 is excited at the beginning of each half-wave.
This can, for example, consist of a pointed body made of any direct material such. B. boron carbide, wel ches is distributed in a ceramic agent and which is immersed in the mercury. The introduction 39 serves to excite the ignition electrode 38.
The envelope 36 can consist of a smooth glass cylinder without having the annular widenings, as described in FIGS. 1 and 2. To strengthen the effect of the magnetic field, the shell is provided on the head with an indentation 40 which is surrounded by an annular anode 41. The iron core of the magnet, which is shown in full in Fig. 5. consists of a frame 42, which in turn consists of three laminated arms. the central arm 43 of which ends in a cylindrical part 14, while the outer arms 45 and 46 are connected symmetrically with a laminated ring 47.
If this arrangement is attached to the discharge tube 36i as shown in Fig. 4 and is excited with the aid of the coil 48, a magnetic field will obviously act transversely to the direction of development and thus the arc will rotate brought on the anode surface.
In Fig. 6 a construction is Darge provides. which can be applied to a vessel with completely smooth cylindrical walls 49. A glow cathode 50 is again provided and the anode 51 is hollowed out and is shown in section in FIG.
In order to let the magnetic flux act over the surface of this anode, a pair of coils 5? and 53 so arranged. that the middle plane coincides finitely with the lower edge of the anode.
Since the two coils 52 and 53 are connected to one another, the magnetic field in the space has a practical direction, namely perpendicular to the discharge path. The lines of magnetic force are shown by dashed lines 54. The magnetic field causes the arc to wander around on the edge of the anodic hollow body.
Fig. 7 shows a further simplified construction in which the magnetic field also acts perpendicular to the discharge path and is generated by the coil 54 '. becomes. In this embodiment, the casing 55 again encloses a hot cathode 56 and a cylindrical anode 57 which is attached to the upper end of the casing. A conical screen 58, which has a slightly larger diameter than the anode, is attached under the anode.
It consists of a insulating material, such as magnesium oxide, for example, and is used to allow the discharge to attach to the side of the anode 57. Since the magnetic field of the coil 54 'acts in the vertical direction, this is also achieved. .that the lines of magnetic force act perpendicular to the discharge path.
In Figs. 8 and 9, a modification of the invention is shown that the immediate extinction of a flashback already during the first half-wave: allows. This construction essentially corresponds to that of Fig. 2. The vessel 61 contains a hot cathode 62 and an annular anode 63 with a short insulating piece 69 to prevent eddy currents.
Outside half of the vessel and opposite the inner surface of the anode, an electromagnet is provided which contains a core 64 which is divided into a pair of. annular poles 65 and 66 terminates.
These are placed on opposite sides of the interspace 67 and cause the discharge current to rotate when it passes through the interspace 67. In the interspace 6, 7 are several ring-shaped shields 71 made of conductive material appropriate.
These screens are provided with holes L to allow the discharge to pass between the cathode and anode. The holes can be arranged as desired. In particular, they are arranged in such a way that: those closer to the cathode:
Umbrellas have larger holes than those further out, as indicated in Fig. 9 at L. In order to avoid electrostatic charging of the metal screens, which could jeopardize the proper functioning of the vessel, they are placed at a certain potential,
for example about one. Resistance 70! according to Fig. 9. The various partial resistances are quite high "so that the discharge does not stick to the screen.
This device ensures that after the onset of a flashback and after the magnet 64 is switched on, the arc: rotates counterclockwise in the opposite direction to the arrow A. The bow can only go through the open holes in the umbrellas;
come to the anode, thereby deionizing it and causing it to go out. This device not only prevents the arc from sticking to the anode, but it is also removed in a very short time, i. H. already extinguished during the first half-wave.
In the: illustrations, the magnetic coils are always placed outside the vessel. In. In many cases it is desirable and expedient to arrange them inside the discharge vessel. The present invention also relates to evacuated vessels that are not filled with steam or gas. The present invention can also be applied to such vessels.
