spanabhebend be- arbeitbar.
Process to improve the machinability of iron-nickel-aluminum alloys. If iron alloys with 7 to 40 nickel, 3 to 20% aluminum, are cast using one of the customary mold casting processes, for example sand castings or chill casting, castings are obtained that are very difficult to machine.
Although the castings can be ground, they do not allow epan-lifting machining by turning, drilling, milling and the like.
A good machinability of the alloys in question is often very desirable. In particular, the good machinability of the alloys cast in molds makes the production of magnets much easier or even possible in the first place.
The latter case occurs when the magnet is to be given a shape which cannot be achieved by casting alone and which requires good mechanical workability of the cast magnet blank. Tests have shown that the machinability of the iron-en-nickel-aluminum alloys mentioned is all the better,
the greater the ratio of the amount of y mixed crystals present in the alloy to the amount of a mixed crystals present in the alloy.
On the basis of this knowledge, a heat treatment process has been developed to produce the largest possible proportion of the alloy in 1 mixed crystals, and indeed it is proposed according to the invention, an iron alloy with 7 to 40% nickel, 3 to 20% aluminum to a temperature that above <B> 700 '</B> C and below the melting point of the alloy, then cool in such a way that
that the mean rate of cooling in the temperature range between the temperature of the a-> - y-transformation and <B> 500 '</B> C is less than <B> 10' </B> C / minute.
The way in which the alloy is brought to the temperature from which it is to be cooled in a controlled manner is of no essential importance for carrying out the process and depends on the respective operating conditions. It is not only possible to warm up cold castings to this temperature, but also to adjust this temperature when cooling a melt poured into molds. The latter method can e.g.
B. be carried out in such a way that the alloy is cast in sand molds, and the castings cooled to the relevant temperature in the mold are removed from the mold and further treated in a special furnace.
The method according to the invention is explained below with reference to a figure, for example. The figure shows a section of constant aluminum content (12.5 ° aluminum) of the iron-nickel-aluminum system. The temperature in degrees Celsius is plotted on the ordinate and the nickel content in percent by weight of the alloy on the abscissa.
Above the liquidus line a there is pure melt (area S.) Between the liquidus line a and the solidus line b, melt plus cc mixed crystals are stable. Below the solid line b and above the line c of the a <B>> </B> y-transformation, the alloy consists exclusively of a-mixed crystals (area A).
Below the line c of the a -> y conversion, the alloy consists of a mixed crystals and y mixed crystals (area B).
The alloys cast in the usual way essentially contain α-mixed crystals and possibly also a small proportion of γ-mixed crystals. However, the content of y mixed crystals in the alloy cast in the usual way is always so low, even in the casting process with slow cooling and therefore low cooling rates, that the casting cannot be machined.
While there is theoretically the possibility of producing the greatest possible formation of the y-phase for the alloy in question in the entire area B lying below line c by annealing the alloy, with consideration of the time required for carrying out a technical procedure. are available, only that part of area B has a role that exceeds <B> 500 '</B> C'. lies.
Within the area bounded by the line c of the a @ - @ y-transformation at the top and by the horizontal line for the temperature 500 C at the bottom. is, according to the invention, the improvement associated with the separation of y-Pliase from the machinability of the alloy is achieved by maintaining a certain cooling rate from when cooling the hot alloy. namely, the rate of cooling in the area be said less than 10 C, / minute, preferably about. 1 C! Llinute.
Before it is cooled in this way, according to the invention the alloy is brought to a temperature which is above <B> 700 </B> C and below the melting point of the respective alloy - for the alloys included in the figure below the solidus line b .
The melting points of most alloys and the temperatures of the a- @ <I> r- </I> transformation are known to an extent sufficient for carrying out the method according to the invention, among other things through the work of W. Roaster, Archiv für das Eisenhüttenwesen (7), 193e3-1, page '257/2262). If these temperatures are not known for a particular alloy, they can easily be determined in a known manner.
For example, the temperature of the a ---> -y transformation can be determined by the static method by bringing about the stable state for a certain temperature by annealing the alloy at this temperature and examining the structure of the same microscopically after the sample has cooled rapidly becomes. Starting from higher to lower temperatures, that temperature is then the temperature of the a + y transformation at which y mixed crystals are found for the first time in addition to a mixed crystals.
In the method according to the invention, the casting is optionally held for a period of time at the temperature to which it has been heated before cooling.
It has been shown to be particularly advantageous to bring the alloy to be treated to a temperature above 700 ° C. but below the temperature of the a - # .y conversion and to hold it at this temperature for a while before it experiences the regulated cooling. If this is followed before an increased precipitation of y mixed crystals and thus improved machinability is achieved. The most appropriate length of time during which the alloy is annealed is 15 minutes or more.
The lower the temperature at which the alloy is annealed, the longer the annealing time should be. Generally two hours are sufficient, but the alloy is at temperatures a little above 700 ° C, e.g. B. 800 C, conveniently held th for more than two hours at this temperature before it is cooled in the manner indicated.
A further embodiment of the method according to the invention consists in that the cooling of the hot alloy in the temperature range between the temperature of the -a -> - y conversion and <B> 500 '</B> C takes place in stages .
For example, a casting made of an alloy containing 12% aluminum, 24 nickel, the remainder iron is heated to <B> 1000 '</B> C, held at this temperature for 30 minutes, then to <B> 850' </B> C cooled at an average cooling rate of 1 C / minute, held at a temperature of <B> 850 '</B> C for two hours and finally down to <B> 500' </B> C at an average cooling rate cooled by 2 C / minute.
Of course, the gradual cooling in the temperature range in question - below the temperature of the a-> y-conversion up to <B> 500 '</B> C with an average mean cooling rate of less than <B> 10' </B> C / minute.
For an alloy with 7 to 40% nickel, 3 to 20% aluminum, the remainder iron, the cooling rate in the temperature range be said is advantageously 5 C / minute, in particular about 1 C / minute.
The method according to the invention can be applied with particular advantage to an alloy consisting of. 10 to 15 aluminum, 20 to 30% nickel, the remainder is iron, and which, as is known, is suitable in excellent measure for the production of permanent magnets.
Such an alloy is expediently heated or heated to between 850 and 9.50 ° C. cooled, kept at this temperature for 15 minutes to 2 hours and then cooled to <B> 500 '</B> C with an average cooling rate of about 1 C / minute.
The process has also been found to improve the machinability of alloys containing 7 to 35% nickel, 3 to 20% aluminum, up to 40% copper and at least 30% iron. The improvement in the machinability of these copper-containing alloys is achieved in particular by maintaining an average cooling rate of around 1.5 ° C / minute in the temperature range between the temperature of the a-> y conversion and <B> 500 ° C </ B> achieved.
An iron alloy with 10 to 15% aluminum, 10 to 30% nickel, 1 to 20% copper is expediently brought to 750 to 900 C, kept at this temperature for 15 minutes to two hours and cooled to <B> 500 '</B> C at an average cooling rate of about <B> 1.5' </B> C / minute.
For example, an alloy with 21% nickel, 12% aluminum, <B> 10% </B> copper, the remainder iron, has a Rockwell hardness C 150 of 42 to 50 in the as-cast state (sand casting or chill casting) and is not:
Machinable. A casting made from this alloy is heated to 800 to 900 C, at around this temperature. Held for two hours, and then cooled to 500 ° C. at a rate of about 1.5 ° C., the alloy shows a decrease in Rockwell hardness C 150 to 37 and proves to be easy to work with high-speed steels.
It was also found that the machinability of iron alloys of the type indicated is also improved in the given way, which additionally contain cobalt or / and one or more of the elements chromium, manganese, molybdenum, Contains silicon, titanium, uranium, vanadium, tungsten in an amount not exceeding 5% each.
An alloy is expediently used which still contains chromium, manganese, molybdenum, silicon, titanium, uranium, vanadium and tungsten in a total amount of no more than 5%.
The castings treated by the new process can u. a. drilling, turning and milling. Conveniently, whoever uses such tools that are made of the so-called high-speed steels, such. B. UTolfram, chrome, vanadium steels, or hard metals. In general, tools made of all metals that have a Rockwell hardness of C 150 of more than 55 are suitable.
If the castings treated according to the invention and then mechanically processed are to be used as permanent magnets, then. In general, heat treatment is also required to bring the castings into the state of the best magnetic properties. For this purpose, after they have been mechanically processed, the castings are subjected in a known manner to magnetic hardening with or without subsequent tempering.
