<I>Beispiel.
Process for the liondensation of olefins with aromatic compounds. It is already known to condense olefins with aromatic compounds in the presence of catalysts.
It has been found that olefins, which can be aliphatic or cyclic, can be condensed with aromatic compounds in the presence of special compounds obtained from boron fluoride in a particularly smooth reaction. The compounds of boron fluoride suitable for this purpose contain at least one hydrogen atom which can be dissociated. Examples of these compounds are the compounds of boron fluoride with water, alcohols, phenols or acids.
Examples of the aliphatic or cyclic olefins which can be condensed with aromatic compounds by the process are ethylene, propylene, butylene, amylene, nonylene, butadiene, isoprene, cyclohexene and cyclohexadiene.
As catalysts, boron fluoride dihydrate in particular, the dialcoholates of boron fluoride with methyl ethyl, propyl and benzyl alcohol, and compounds of boron fluoride with formic acid, acetic acid and propionic acid can be used. These compounds are described in the treatise by H. Meerwein in the Journal for Practical Chemistry, Volume 141, Issue 5-8, page 123 ff.
These catalysts can be used to condense the olefins with aromatic compounds of all kinds. Examples of such aromatic compounds are benzene, its homologues, polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons such as naphthalene, anthracene, anthracene residues, and aromatic oxy compounds such as phenols, partially hydrogenated aromatic compounds such as tetrahydronaphthalene and their derivatives.
For the inventive condensation process, it is not necessary to use the olefins in concentrated form. Rather, they can also be condensed in a diluted state, for example in industrial exhaust gases (oil gas, cracked gas and the like), with the aid of the catalysts mentioned.
The reaction can be promoted by using elevated temperatures and pressures.
In some cases it is advantageous to carry out the condensation in the presence of a solvent which is incapable of reacting with the olefin. This working method offers advantages when one of the reactants is solid under the applied temperature conditions.
Example .T 600 parts by weight of naphthalene are treated in the presence of 100 parts by weight of boron fluoride dihydrate in an autoclave at 160 to 170 'and an overpressure of about 30 atmospheres with ethylene gas. The introduction of ethylene gas is continued until a weight gain of 300 parts by weight has occurred. The oily reaction product is separated from the catalyst.
Then it is washed with a dilute alkali solution. Finally, the product is distilled under reduced pressure. The distillation gives 750 parts by weight of ethylated naphthalene, and small amounts of unchanged naphthalene are also obtained.
<I> Example 2: </I> In a mixture of 600 parts by weight of naphthalene and 100 parts by weight of the catalyst used in Example 1, propylene gas is stirred at <B> 60 '</B> under a pressure of about 5 atmospheres. Propylene gas is fed in until a weight increase of 660 parts by weight has occurred. When the oily reaction product is distilled, almost 96% isopropylated naphthalenes are obtained.
Example <I> 3: </I> A mixture of 600 parts by weight of naphthalene, 120 parts by weight of the catalyst used in the previous example and 3.80 parts by weight of isononylene is heated to 190 to 200 ° C. for 4 hours. Distillation of the reaction product under reduced pressure yields 250 parts by weight of unchanged naphthalene, 500 parts by weight of isononylnaphthalene and 100 parts by weight of diisononylnaphthalene.
<I> Example 4: </I> 600 parts by weight of naphthalene are treated with propylene gas in the presence of 100 parts by weight of boron fluoride acetic acid at <B> 60 '</B> in the autoclave until a weight increase of 700 parts has occurred. The reaction product has essentially the same properties as that obtained in Example 2.
<I> example. 5: One treats in an autoclave at <B> 180 '</B> 750 parts by weight of naphthalene with 500 parts by weight of isohegylene in the presence of 150 parts by weight of boron fluoride dihydrate for about 5 hours. Then the boron fluoride dihydrate is separated from the oily reaction product in the heat, the reaction product is washed with soda solution and distilled. In addition to unchanged hegylene and naphthalene, 450 parts by weight of hegylated naphthalene are obtained.
