Description
Process for the preservation of green fodder. For the preservation of protein-rich types of feed such as alfalfa, vetches, clover, young grass, etc., sugars or strong acids such as hydrochloric and sulfuric acid have been suggested as preservatives. The general use of sugar is hampered by its high price; the handling of strongly caustic and corrosive acids is unpleasant and dangerous.
It has been found that the esters of those aliphatic acids, in particular formic acid, especially 3-methyl formate, are an excellent means of preserving green fodder. These substances lack caustic and corrosive effects, so that they can be handled easily and safely. For example, a solution of such an ester in water is distributed in the usual way in the feed to be preserved.
The good effectiveness of the esters is presumably based on the interaction of the basic substances, acid and alcohol, which arise from them through hydrolysis. In this way it can be avoided that the preserved feed contains inorganic additives that may be harmful to the living organism.
Example: 300 kg of alfalfa are mixed in a known manner with a solution of 490 g of methyl formate, which was dissolved in 21 liters of water, and stored in the silo. After eight weeks the silo was opened; it contained a completely butyric acid-free can.
