Process for blackening surfaces, in particular electrodes and other components of discharge tubes, as well as radiating bodies. With various constructions, instruments, apparatus, but especially with discharge tubes such as the radio receiver and transmitter tubes, rectifier tubes, etc.
components are often used, mainly metals, the physical and chemical properties of which meet the requirements due to the peculiarities of the construction, but the surface of which deviates in the most advantageous and desirable properties.
For example, the grid and anode of the radio transmitter tubes are most advantageously made of nickel, molybdenum or tungsten, although the radiation capacity of these metals does not meet all of the requirements.
Apart from the fact that tungsten and molybdenum easily oxidize the scent, both of the latter metals still have the property
that they shine selectively and. consequently the amount of heat developed during the operation of the tube cannot be dissipated by radiation to the same extent as the black bodies. In the case of receiver and transmitter tubes, there is therefore the need to artificially blacken electrodes made of nickel, molybdenum, tungsten and other metals.
The method given in this description is not limited to these cases, but this case is selected as an example.
Processes for coating metal surfaces with other substances, for example with other metals, are known. Such a process is, for example, electroplating. However, it may also be necessary to coat metals, in the present case for example the surface of a grid or an anode or a radiating body, with substances that do not electrolytically - are applicable.
It also happens that the electrolytic processes have various difficulties or disadvantages. The present invention now enables a process that is applicable to any substance, with the help of which any metals or semiconductors can be blackened. According to the invention, the substance providing a black layer is deposited from a colloidal solution onto the surface to be coated by electrophoresis.
Tests have shown that colloidal graphite is a suitable coating material for anodes and grids of electron tubes. If, for example, a 0.01% aqueous colloid solution is made from the well-known colloidal graphite,
The anode to be coated or the grid is connected as a positive electrode and a platinum plate is connected as a negative electrode and a voltage of about 8 to 10 volts is applied between these two electrodes, after a few minutes a well-adhering, coherent surface is obtained on the surface of the anode , even graphite layer,
Their strength naturally depends on the current density and the duration of the electrophoresis. In one of the test series, for example, the current density was 1.4 mA / em @, with a 0.001 mm thick layer forming after about 7 minutes. It seemed appropriate to increase the alkalinity of the solution by adding ammonia during the electrophoresis. During the tests, the amount of ammonia was 0.03.
The electrophoretically deposited graphite layer adheres very well to the anode surface; it is difficult to remove by rubbing and tolerates all treatments very well that are necessary for the subsequent treatment of the anode.
Other methods are also known for the visualization or carbonization of the anodes of receiving and transmitting tubes. So for. For example, a process in which the nickel material to be blackened is heated in gas or a gas that contains other hydrocarbons. Compared to these processes, the colloidal processes have numerous advantages; they are simple, cheap, pure, and the layer produced is uniform, permanent, etc.
The working method given above, for example, can not only be carried out with colloidal graphite, but can also be carried out with other carbon modifications that have been brought into colloidal solution in some way, for example with active carbon, @ besides his the radiation-increasing property also has gas-binding and gas-cleaning properties.
The process can also be carried out with metals, metal oxides and other compounds which are brought into colloidal solution. Bringing such substances to the electrodes of electron tubes is necessary for numerous technical reasons; such reasons are, for example, gas absorption, the decrease or increase in secondary electron emission, etc.
It may also be necessary to coat the electrodes of discharge tubes with other substances, for example, if the discharge tube contains gas, as is the case with gas-filled tubes or with fluorescent tubes where the surface properties of the discharge tube change the character of the discharge, for example the ignition voltage, the cathode drop, etc., can be influenced in a suitable manner.
The blackening of surfaces may be necessary in the case of discharge tubes, vacuum tubes, and furthermore in the case of radiation apparatus, also for the purpose of causing the surface to be coated to emit selective radiation. In this case too, the coating material is deposited on the surface from a colloidal solution by electrophoretic means.
In order to finally achieve the surface coating, it can often happen that electrophoresis only forms part of the overall coating process.
If, for example, the nickel anode of a transmitter tube is to be coated with tungsten by electrophoretic means, it is advisable to proceed in such a way that a colloidal tungsten oxide solution is prepared, the surface is electrophoretically coated with tungsten oxide and then the coated electrode is reduced by annealing in hydrogen . Thereby he keeps a tungsten coating made of pure metal.
This way of working is particularly important, for example, when coating the anti-cathodes of X-ray tubes.
