Method and device for electrical resistance welding of the longitudinal seams of pipes.
It is known to weld longitudinal seams of pipes both with gas and flame arc welding and also with the resistance welding process. It has been shown that the resistance method works more economically than the other methods. Both in the
With gas and flame arc welding, strong oxidation of the weld seam is inevitable, so that during the
Welding this oxide layer into the
Weld is included and impaired the strength of the pipe. These
The type of heating can also be used for pre-heating, but the described Ubelstand appears even more strongly.
When preheating by means of the resistance principle occurs less
Oxidation, but there is a risk that this seam, which is covered with oxide, will also be inserted under the weld. In spite of the complex machine arrangement, such as trimming the edges, it was previously not possible to feed the weld seam to the weld zone in a heated state without oxide.
Originally, attempts were made to weld the longitudinal seams of pipes made of hot-rolled, bent flat iron without machining the edges. The edges of hot-rolled flat iron are generally round and rough, form very different distances from one another in the slot and offer a very unfavorable surface for the passage of current. As a result of these irregularities, it often happened that the edges at the point of the weld could not be brought into contact. As a result, one has been forced to process the edges mechanically.
As a result, significantly smoother surfaces were achieved than before, but the evenness could not be achieved which was necessary for an appropriate welding without a noteworthy welding bead.
According to the invention, the preheating and simultaneous pressing against one another make the edges of the slot smooth and match one another without them sticking to one another. The edges of the slot remain pressed against one another until they are melted off under the action of the two opposite electrode rollers.
After they have melted, they are pressed together and then fed into the tempering process.
This method makes it possible to weld unprocessed slot edges in such a way that no oxide inclusions are present in the weld seam. The heat supply provided also ensures that a metal structure is created in and in the vicinity of the weld seam, which cannot be distinguished from that of the original material.
In the drawing, which schematically shows an embodiment of the device which is also the subject of the invention, 1 represents the pipe to be welded.
The arrows in Fig. 1 indicate the direction of travel of the pipe. 2 is the preheating and 4 the tempering electrode roller, while 3 represent the two actual welding electrodes arranged to the right and left of the seam, 5, 6 and 6a are horizontally and vertically arranged pressure and guide rollers without a power connection. 7 are electrode holders, 8 are the screws that hold these multi-part electrode holders together. 9 and 10 are the power supply cables, 11 and 12 are handwheels with which springs 13 and 14 can be tensioned or relaxed as required. 15 and 16 are in the dir.
ng of the pipe mutually adjustable brackets to which the electrode holders 7 are attached by means of screw spindles. 17 are two-part, conical slip rings at the end of the label that lead from the transformer to the electrode rollers 3, 18 the conical journal of these electrode rollers and 19 screws that hold the two-part slip rings 17 together with springs 20 underneath. The slip rings 17 are located on the side of each electrode facing the other roller. The conical design of the ring and axle has the effect that the ring is constantly pressed against a side surface of the electrode roller by the resilient device and thus rubs against it.
The pipe to be welded first passes the preheating electrode 2. The edges of the slot are first preheated here, and only so far that they do not adhere to one another. The lateral pressure and guide rollers 6 press them together and make them fit together. The slot, which remains closed under the effect of the lateral pressure of the rollers 6, continues and comes under the electrode rollers 3, under which the melting of the material at the slot edges should take place. At the moment when the melting is to take place, the slot opens.
The opening of the slot takes place either through the resilient tension inherent in the pipe during manufacture or by mechanical means.
If the melting and thus the flowing of the liquid material of the edges has taken place, the edges are pressed together again by the action of the lateral pressure and guide rollers 5.
The slot is now completely welded.
The pipe may have internal stresses due to the heat treatments described, which can have harmful effects. To compensate for such tensions, a further heat treatment is therefore provided, namely that under the tempering electrode roller 4.
The compensation and preheating electrodes are expediently connected to the same phase of the network. If the preheating has been sufficiently high, the tempering temperature will advantageously be kept lower. If, on the other hand, the preheating was low, the tempering temperature will expediently be kept higher.
The regulation of these two temperatures is possible by changing the transition resistance between the electrode rollers and the tube. This is dependent on the contact pressure of the electrode rollers, which can be changed by means of springs 13, 14. The regulation is still possible, however, by changing the ohmic resistance in the pipe, that is to say by changing the distance between the electrode rollers in the longitudinal direction of the pipe, which is why the brackets 15 and 16 can be displaced lengthways.
The bearings of the electrode holders 7 are not closed in order to achieve constant good contact between the power supplying electrode holders 7 and the axis of the electrode roll, but rather have a slot which is held together by a screw with an interposed spring. This ensures that the bearing always lies snugly on the axis of the electrode roller. With this arrangement, almost the entire circumference of the bearing in the electrode holder 7 can be expected for the power transmission.
The device described is expediently connected to a three-phase network. But it can also be operated with three single-phase currents.
