Device with an electric discharge tube filled with gas and steam. The invention relates to a device with an electric discharge tube filled with gas and steam and fed from an alternating current source, the vapors being particularly vapors of low-volatility metals, for example sodium vapor. Such devices can be used, for example, for lighting purposes.
When a discharge tube with steam filling is started up, the metal vapor present in the tube initially has only a low pressure, so that in the first time after start-up, the filling gas in the discharge tube mainly takes part in the discharge. This discharge heats the vaporizable metal in the tube, where the metal vapor receives a higher pressure and begins to participate intensively in the discharge. It is known, for example, that discharge tubes containing neon and mercury emit first the reddish neon light and then the blue mercury silver light.
The time required to maintain this mercury light is generally short; When using metals that are less volatile than mercury, for example sodium, things are different. In the case of discharge tubes that contain sodium in addition to a gas filling, it usually takes a long time before the tube has reached the normal operating temperature and the sodium vapor has a pressure such that it takes part in the emission of light intensively.
The invention has the purpose of shortening the period required to maintain the vapor pressure required for normal operation compared to the use of a pure ballast inductance.
According to the invention, a choke coil and a capacitor are connected in series with the gas and steam-filled discharge tube fed from an alternating current source at least for the heating time of the tube, the ratio between the fundamental frequency capacitance of the capacitor and the fundamental frequency inductance of the Choke coil. Is greater than 1.4, at least in such a 3-hole,
that .the heating-up time is shortened compared to the use of a pure series inductance.
Within the limit value found experimentally for the number of ratios on the one hand and the difference between capacitance and inductance taking into account possible ohmic resistances corresponding stabilization impedance on the other hand, the value ranges for the capacitance and inductance may also result in the following disadvantages: the following has to be taken into account to eliminate them.
It can happen; If the values of the capacitance and inductance are too small, as would result from the selection of an excessively large amount for the ratio, before the ignition desired in each half cycle after the current has been interrupted in the preceding half cycle, discharge currents of very short duration, but of great intensity which are very detrimental to the life of the tube. The ratio between the capacitance and inductance is therefore expediently selected to be smaller than the value at which the mentioned discharge current surges occur.
On the other hand, however, the device according to the invention can also show that if the value of the ratio is too small, i.e. if the capacitance and inductance in the discharge tube are too high, there is occasionally no discharge for at least one period. This value can also easily be determined through experiments. The ratio between the capacitance and inductance is therefore expediently selected to be greater than the value at which no discharge takes place in the discharge tube for at least one period.
It has been shown that: the device according to the invention, in addition to the advantage of the shortened heating-up time, also has the advantage that it is less sensitive to fluctuations in the voltage of the supplying current source than a device with pure series inductance. If one does not want or need to make use of the greater insensitivity to voltage fluctuations achieved in this way, after the tube has reached a sufficiently high temperature, it is possible to switch to a different pre-impedance, for example consisting exclusively of self-induction will.
The value 2 of the ratio number is particularly suitable for this switchover, because in this case the choke coil as such has the necessary stabilization impedance so that the switchover can be made by simply switching off or bypassing the capacitor.
Since the capacitance outweighs the inductance, the current supplied by the current source leads. If the discharge tube is fed from a network that is inductively loaded (as is often the case), this leading current can only be advantageous. In many cases, however, you want the power factor of a system to be connected to a network as large as possible, expediently to be equal to one.
In this case, the discharge tube provided with a capacitive stabilization impedance can be combined very well with a discharge tube provided with an inductive stabilization impedance. The pre- and In this case, lag can be selected such that the total current is in phase with the voltage of the current source.
If both discharge tubes contain the same metal vapor filling, the tube with inductive impedance naturally has a longer heating-up time than the one with capacitive impedance. If necessary, this deficiency can be remedied by special tricks, for example by heating up the tube with inductive series impedance with the aid of heating elements.
This disadvantage occurs to a much lesser extent if the tube with inductive series impedance contains a metal that evaporates more easily than the metal present in the tube with capacitive impedance. This is the case, for example, when a discharge tube containing sodium vapor is combined with a discharge tube with a mercury vapor filling. With this device, the first-mentioned tube can be provided with a capacitive and: the last-mentioned tube with an inductive impedance.
The stated disadvantage does not occur at all if the vapor discharge tube is combined with a discharge tube filled exclusively with gas. To maintain white light, it has been proposed, for example, to combine a sodium vapor discharge tube with a neon tube. Since no metal vapor pressure needs to be developed in the latter, it is advantageous to provide this tube with an inductive one, while the tube with metal vapor filling is provided with the capacitive stabilization impedance.
The disadvantage that one of the discharge tubes heats up more slowly due to the inductive stabilization impedance can also be reduced by arranging this tube so close to the discharge tube with capacitive series impedance that they can heat up each other, i.e. one Heat exchange between the two tubes is possible.
This is the case for example. when both tubes are enclosed by a bell surrounding them or, better still, by a double-walled envelope with an air-free space between the two walls of this envelope.
In Figs. 1 and 2, two Ausfüh approximate forms of the subject matter of the invention are shown for example.
The device according to FIG. 1 has a discharge tube 7 which is provided at each end with a glow electrode 8 and an electrode 9 surrounding it. The electrodes 8 and 9 are connected to each other, and the glow electrodes 8 can be heated with the help of heating transformers. However, it is also possible to use glow electrodes that are only heated by the discharge.
The tube 7 ent holds a noble gas, for example neon, under low pressure, and some sodium; whose vapor emits an intense yellow light during normal operation.
The discharge tube 7 is connected to the alternating current source 10, which may consist of the transformer in the case of the secondary winding of a transformer. A choke coil 11 and a capacitor 12 are connected in series with the discharge tube.
In the case of a certain sodium vapor discharge tube, which was fed by an alternating current source of 50 Hertz and an effective voltage of 220 volts, the distance between the electrodes was 120 cm and the inner tube diameter was 35 mm. The inductor had a self-induction of 0.24 henry and the capacitor a capacitance of 18 microfarads.
It follows from this that the capacitance was 177 ohms, the inductance 75.5 ohms and, if the ohmic resistances were neglected, the resulting impedance was 101.5 ohms leading. It turned out that 15 respectively. 18 and 35 minutes after switching on the intensity of the emitted light 70 respectively. 78 resp. 100% of the final intensity achieved, while using an impedance consisting only of a choke coil in the amount of 101.5 ohms under otherwise the same conditions, these percentages 17 respectively. 20 resp. 30%.
With the capacitance and inductance values mentioned, no discharge current surges occurred during the dark periods, and no periods of the discharge process were skipped over either.
The device of Fig. 2 includes two discharge tubes. One of these, namely the tube 7, is connected in series with the choke coil 11 and the capacitor 12 in the manner described in connection with FIG. 1, the ratio between capacitance and inductance being greater than 1.4 according to the invention. The other Ent charge tube 13 is closed exclusively with the interposition of the choke coil 14 to the secondary winding of a transformer.
As a result, the current drawn from the network 15 by the discharge tube 7 will be ahead of the line voltage and the current drawn from the tube 13 will lag behind. The power factor of the entire device is therefore very favorable and can be made practically equal to 1. If the discharge tubes 7 and 13 contain the same metal filling, the tube 7 is heated up faster than the tube 13. As already noted above, this drawback is eliminated when the tube 13 is filled with a readily evaporating metal or with one made entirely of gas existing filling is provided.
It is evident that the invention is not limited to devices with only one discharge tube. There can of course be a large number of tubes which are connected in the manner according to the invention. It can all tubes with a choke coil and capacitor (with fiction according to predominant capacitance) exist the ballast impedance be provided, or some tubes can be provided in the manner shown in Fig. 2 with an inductive switching impedance.
If the device is used, for example, to illuminate paths, squares or the like, the discharge tubes can be provided alternately with a capacitive and inductive series impedance.
Vapor of non-volatile metals is to be understood here as the metal vapors used in discharge tubes whose pressure at 200 ° C. is less than 1 mm, for example sodium, cadmium, magnesium, thalium, rubidium or lithium vapor.
