Sur le dessin annexé, on a représenté, à titre -d'exemple et de manière absolument schématique, un nombre .de formes d'exécution -de l'invention. e Là fig: 1 montre la première forme,d'exé- cntion du dispositif de commande automati que; La_ fig. 2 est une vue schématique d'une variante;
Pour les alternances positives, on obtient un courant anodique pulsatoire agissant sur le relais 29, 41 lorsque la cellule 22 est exci- tée par une source lumineuse;
Device for the automatic control of the headlights of motor vehicles. The object of the present invention is a positive device for the automatic control of the headlights of motor vehicles with the aim, for example, of causing the passage from “road” lighting to “code” lighting and vice versa.
This object is achieved in the device according to the invention owing to the fact that it comprises at least one photoelectric cell cooperating with an optical system and an amplifier which acts on a changeover relay controlling the circuit - at least one headlight. and that of at least one coded headlight in order to: automatically obtain the interruption of the high-beam headlights circuit and the. closing of the coded headlights circuit when encountering another vehicle fitted with headlights.
The whole device can be designed in such a way that the moment when the radiations (visible or invisible) from a suitable external source, for example the headlights of another automobile come, after passing through the optical system, to influence the photoelectric cell, this one.
controls the amplifier, so that the output current of the latter device controls the relay switch to cut the high beam circuit and close the headlight waxing, code, circuits which may possibly include a source of radiation (visible or invisible) intended for,
act on a similar device mounted on an oncoming vehicle.
In this device, the photoelectric cell which can be a photoresist cell, for example a selenium cell forming one of the branches of a Wheatstone bridge amplifier, including the. symmetrical branch includes, for the balancing of the system, a suitable variable resistor.
In one embodiment of the device, an electromagnet controlling the movable contact of an inverter is interposed in the plate circuit of the amplifying lamp (s), the winding of this electromagnet being coupled with the current. from a battery pack. _ "In one form of execution, the amplifier acts on a primary relay which controls its sound.
turn the change-over relay controlling the main beam headlights circuit and the coded headlights, the supply of the anode circuit: of the lamp or of the amplifying lamps being ensured by a step-up transformer whose primary source is supplied by a source of direct current interrupted periodically by a breaker of any known type.
Finally, in a third embodiment, the aforementioned step-up transformer comprises: daüx secondary windings: one of which is used for heating the filament of the or: amplifying lamps.
It is also possible to provide for the application to the device which has just been described; a special switch consisting of a metal disc -placed in the magnetic field of the secondary electromagnet, including the circuit. is controlled by the aforementioned disc; a rolling roller. on said disc momentarily controls a pallet organized so as to close the circuit.
In the accompanying drawing, there is shown, by way of example and absolutely schematically, a number of embodiments of the invention. There, fig: 1 shows the first form of execution of the automatic control device; The_ fig. 2 is a schematic view of a variant;
Fig. 3 -is another embodiment <B>, of the </B> \ device shown in FIG. 2; Fig. 4 is a detail view.
As can be seen in FIG. 1, 1 is the converging optical system placed in front of a cell 2 which, in the present case; is a photoresist cell.
The two terminals of cell 2 are connected, on the one hand, to a variable resistor 3 and to the grid of an amplifier lamp 4 and, on the other hand, to the positive pole: of the anode current source 5. The anode of the amplifying lamp 4 is zealous to the positive pole of the aforementioned current source through the winding of the inverter relay 6 ...
The amplifier equipment comprises: in addition, a current source 7 in series with the current source <B> 5, </B> the junction point between the two aforementioned sources, junction point which constitutes one of the tops of the Wheatstone bridge, being connected, by the intermediary of a potentiometer 8, to the terminals of the current source 9 supplying the filament of the lamp 4.
The reversing relay electromagnet 6 can control a paddle 10 normally touching the contact 11 to close the supply circuit of the main beam headlights 12. When the paddle 10 is attracted by the electromagnet 6, it closes, via a contact 13, the circuit supplying, on the one hand, the coded headlight and, on the other hand, a source 15 emitting visible or invisible radiation, mounted in parallel and capable of action the cell. photoelectric: of a: similar device mounted on a following vehicle in the opposite direction.
The headlights 12 and 14 and the lamp 15 are supplied by the same current source 16.
The device is completed by a bipolar inverter 17 established to enable the main-beam headlight circuit 12 to be closed by hand, position shown in dotted lines, so that the user can give a signal, - for example to a vehicle coming in the opposite direction.
Switch 18, which is <B> already </B> in the usual equipment of each car, is connected - as shown in the diagram and allows operation at all times with the headlight set.
The operation of the apparatus is as follows: In the absence of any excitation - on the pTiotoresistant cell 2, the .. resistor 3 is adjusted so that the Wheatstone bridge amplifier, the branches of which are formed by batteries 5 and 7, by adjustable resistor 3 and. by the resistance of the cell- unlit. 2 is in equilibrium. And that no current passes through the anode circuit, or at least a sufficiently low current, so that the relay 6, 10 in tercalé -in the anode circuit of the lamp 4 is in.
rest position, position in which the circuit of the current source 16 is closed on the main beam (s) 12.
As soon as a light excitation comes, after having crossed the optical system 1, strike the. photoresist cell 2, the balance of the bridge is broken due to the variation in resistance of the photoresist cell which constitutes, as we have seen, one of the branches of the bridge; the grid of the lamp 4 becomes positive with respect to the filament and the anode current takes a sufficient value for the electromagnet 6 to attract the paddle 10 which then cuts the circuit of the headlight 12 and closes the circuit of the coded headlight 14 and source 15.
When the inverter 17 is in the position shown in solid lines, the code lighting operates automatically. By putting the reverser 17 in the position shown in dotted lines, the user can, using the main beam, give a signal, for example to an oncoming vehicle.
By putting the switch 18 in a position 90 from that shown on the figure, the user can permanently code himself independently of the automatic switch device.
The embodiment shown in. fig. 2 comprises a convergent optical system 21 placed in front of the cell 22 which is also a photoresist cell, but it is obvious that any other type of photoelectric or photovoltaic cell can be provided; it is also possible to substitute for the other organs of the system-organs of any desired type.
The two terminals of cell 22 are connected, on the one hand, to a variable resistor 23 and to the gate of a triode or amplifying lamp 24 and, on the other hand, to terminal 25 of secondary 26 of a step-up transformer whose primary 27 is interposed in the circuit of a direct current source 28. The anode of the lamp 24 is connected to terminal 25, through the relay winding 29. Terminal 30 - of the secondary winding 2.6 is connected to the variable resistor 23.
An intermediate socket 31 -of the secondary winding 26 is connected, via a potentiometer 32, to terminals 33 and 34 of the heating circuit of the filament of the lamp 24; the heating current of this lamp is supplied by a current source which can be connected to terminals 35 and 36. This heating source can be constituted by a few elements of the battery 28. A resistor 37 allows the adjustment of the heating of the filament. The triode lamp can be either directly heated or indirectly heated by direct current.
The purpose of the transformer 38 is to four = nir a high voltage starting from the low voltage generally existing on motor vehicles, so that one can have the. high voltage required to power the anode of the amplifier lamp? 4. The primary winding 27 of the power supply transformer is connected to the two terminals of the accumulator battery 28 or of the generator available on motor vehicles.
The variations of flux necessary for the production of the induced currents in the secondary winding 26 are obtained by periodically cutting the primary circuit of the transformer by means of a breaker or shaker 29 placed in series on the circuit of the winding primary. The breaker 39 can: be electrically or mechanically controlled.
In the case of a mechanical breaker, this can be organized like the ignition breakers and can be driven by the motor.
A capacitor 40 placed in -bypass on the contacts of the breaker 39 absorbs the extra breaking current.
A simpler solution is to use the ignition switch itself directly.
For this purpose, the primary winding 27 can be connected to the terminals of the current source 28, in bypass or: in series with the ignition coil.
When the assembly is made in bypass, the output terminal of the primary winding 27 is connected to the breaker 39 at the connection point of the corresponding terminal of the primary of the ignition coil. In this way, the arrival of the current at the breaker is made by two different circuits and the closing takes place by the ground through the -two contacts <B> said </B> breaker 89.
It would also be possible to envisage the use of an organized ignition coil to simultaneously serve as a transformer for the amplifying triode 24.
One could also use a small alternator driven by the car engine.
The electromagnet 29 controls a pad 41 normally touching the contact 42 to close the circuit of a second electromagnet 43, the supply current of which is supplied by the current source 28 connected to this effect. terminals 44 and 45 via a bypass. On the circuit of the electromagnet 43, a resistor 46 is interposed which allows the adjustment of the current -d'alimentation -of the electromagnet considered.
When the paddle 41 is attracted by the electromagnet 29, it closes, via the contact 42, the circuit of the electromagnet 43 which attracts the paddle 47 which touches the contact 48 to cut the circuit d power supply .lu main beam headlight 49 and to close, by means of contact 50, the circuit which supplies, on the one hand, the headlight (s) code 51 and, on the other hand, a source 52 - visible or invisible colored non-glare light,
light which would be added to that .du headlight (s) -code in order to actuate, at a greater distance than the code headlight (s) alone, a similar device placed on a vehicle arriving in the opposite direction.
The terminals 53 and 54 of the main beam headlight circuit 49, of the code 51 headlight (s) and of the additional non-dazzling source 52 are connected to the current source 2.8. It would also be possible to insert a bipolar pourer 55 to allow the main beam headlight circuit 49 to be closed by hand, position shown in dotted lines in the drawing, so that a signal can be given to an arriving vehicle. reverse.
The switch 56 which can be the one which already exists on each car can be connected in the way which is indicated in the drawing, so that one can walk permanently with the headlight .code.
A switch 57 enables the device to be started.
When the switch 57 estdans the position shown in lines. dotted lines on the fi-. 2, the entire device is at a standstill, since the primary winding circuit 27 of the transformer, the heating circuit of the filament and the circuit of the photoresist cell 22 are cut off.
One could organize the electromagnet 29 so that it directly ensures the operation of the electromagnet 43, but given the considerable intensity of lighting current, this would result in a deterioration of the electromagnet. magnet 29 sensitive to the low current of pla that of the triode 24.
In the variant shown in FIG. 3, a transformer is provided which allows the total power supply of the amplifier lamp.
In this example, the supply transformer comprises a primary winding 27 and two secondary windings 26 and 58. The secondary winding 26 terminating at terminals 25 and 30 enables the supply of the anode circuit of the triode lamp 24.
The second secondary winding 58 provides heating -du filament, an adjustment resistor 37 in series in the heating circuit allows adjustment -de this heating; the potentiometer 32 is mounted as a branch on the filament, the cursor of this potentiometer being connected to the intermediate tap 31 of the second 2-6 of the transformer.
Switch 57 cuts the circuit of the cell. In the last two variants shown, the switch 57 can be associated with the switch 56, so that the device is put into action whenever it is desired to use the main beam headlights, vertical position of the switch 56.
In the foregoing, the addition of an additional lamp 52, of which the radiations of a non-dazzling color, red-orange for example, are added to the light emitted by the coded headlights, has been considered. so that when the device is in code, it can act at a large enough distance on a similar installation - a vehicle arriving in the opposite direction.
One could obviate the difficulty resulting from the insufficiency of the light -of the coded headlight to actuate a -device analogous to a distance corresponding to -that at which the headlights act by switching on, when the device enters. in function, if the main beam headlight and the first headlight are turned on for a short time,
but sufficient nonetheless to allow cell 22 of the other vehicle to be sensitized by glare and to remain impressed after the high beam headlights have been switched off under the sole light of the low beam headlights.
In order to obtain this result, the special arrangement shown in FIG. 4. In this example, a special switch is used which, when switching from high beam lighting to low beam lighting, closes the high beam and low beam circuit, then cuts the high beam circuit. .
Such a switch consists of a metallic disc 59 placed in a magnetic field directed perpendicular to the surface of the disc, a magnetic field which may be that produced by the electromagnet 43 between the branches of which the disc is placed. aforementioned, so that it normally cuts the lines of the magnetic field generated when the power supply circuit is closed,
by the pallet 41 and the contact 42, under the action of the electromagnet 29.
This supply circuit closes through the disc 59 by means of a roller 60 and the axis of rotation 61 of said disc. For understanding -du .dessin, we represented the disc 59 in profile and outside the electromagnet 43.
If no current passes through the winding of the electromagnet 29, the disc remains in the position shown in fig. 4. But when the winding in question is traversed by a current, the pallet 41 closes, on contact 42, the supply circuit of the electromagnet 43 and the magnetic field generated by the latter acts on the disc. cam profile 59 which rotates on its axis 61.
The roller 60 constantly applied to the profile of the disc 59 is carried by an insulating lever terminated by a pallet 62 which forms, in cooperation with the contact 63, the headlight circuit via the bypass 64. The phasers re-road and the high-beam headlight then remain supplied with power until the roller 60 enters a notch -disc 59; at this instant, the paddle 62 leaves the contact 63 and cuts the main beam headlights circuit, the low beam headlight alone remaining on.
When the circuit of the electromagnet 43 is cut by the paddle 41, the magnetic field of said electromagnet is canceled out and the disc 59 returns to its initial rest position, thanks to a non-return spring. shown in the drawing.
We can consider the device "which has just been described as a Wheatstone bridge, the branches of which are formed by the resistor 23 and the cell 22 on the one hand, and the two parts of the secondary for the power supply. the anode of the amplifying lamp on the other hand, terminal 31 constituting one of the junction points of the bridge, the other of which is formed by the point of connection of the gate to the circuit of the cell.
The device which has just been described above operates in the following manner: In the absence of any -excitation of the photoelectric cell 22, the resistor 23 and the potentiometer 32 are adjusted so that the gate - of the triode 24 either at a negative potential with respect to the filament and that no current passes through the anode circuit, or <B> all </B> at least a very low current, so that the relay 29, 41 interposed in the anode circuit - of the lamp 24 is in rest condition,
condition in which the circuit -of the electromagnet 42 is open, the pallet- 47 closing, through -du contact 48, the circuit -of the high beams. As soon as the light radiations, after having crossed the optical system 21, strike the cell 22, the resistance of the latter decreases and the grid of the amplifying lamp. 24 is positively charged during -which the current goes -from terminal 30 to, terminal 25,
the plate then being at a positive potential. During the alternation during which the current goes from terminal 25 to terminal 30, the. resistor 23 remaining fixed, the gate does not charge and the anode current is zero. It can thus be seen that the triode 24 plays the dual role of amplifying lamp and of current regulator. The apparatus therefore operates with an alternating plate voltage.
In the case of a transformer whose primary circuit is controlled by a breaker; these alternations are unequal, the positive alternation being much greater than the negative alternation.
For the positive half-waves, a pulsating anode current is obtained acting on the relay 29, 41 when the cell 22 is excited by a light source;
the pallet 41 closes the circuit of the electromagnet. The pallet 47 obeying the electromagnet 43 then cuts the headlamp circuit: from main to contact 48 and closes the circuit of the coded headlight on contact 50 and this as long as the light excitation produced by a coming vehicle lasts. in. reverse.
When the inverter 55 is in the position shown in solid lines, the code lighting operates automatically.
By putting the aforementioned reverser in the position shown in dotted lines, the user can, using the main beam headlight, give a signal, for example, to an oncoming vehicle.
It is obvious that the devices described above and shown in the accompanying drawing are given only. as an indication and not limiting, these devices may undergo modifications of detail. It is thus, for example, that instead of using a single electric photocell, it is possible to use -two or a greater number mounted in parallel or in series.
The same is true of the amplifier device which may include any desired number of amplifier lamps of any suitable type.
