Discharge tube with a glow electrode to be heated up by the discharge and a gaseous filling. It has already been proposed to provide a discharge tube with a gaseous filling with one or more glowing electrodes to be heated by the discharge, substances with high electron emissivity, and also to attach a conductive coating to the tube wall to facilitate ignition.
The invention now aims to facilitate the ignition of such tubes even more, that is, to further reduce the ignition voltage.
According to the invention is for this purpose in a tube which has at least one electrode to be heated by the discharge, which has a high electron emissivity on at least part of its surface, the tube wall is on a near this electrode and from the coating covered place a laced. This reduces the smallest distance between the deposit and the electrode, which lowers the ignition voltage and can have a favorable influence on the heating of the electrode.
The tube wall is expediently constricted in such a way that the smallest distance between the wall covering and the electrode is no more than about 2 mm.
It is also useful to: make the wall covering wide so that it extends over a third of the tube wall or more. The wide wall covering can advantageously be designed as a reflector at the same time, and the covering can be made of silver with good results.
It has been found that tubes designed according to the invention can be dimensioned very well in such a way that they can be ignited with a voltage of 110 volts. The gas pressure does not need to be kept extremely low. The use of a higher gas pressure is very beneficial with a view to avoiding interference with the regularly very thin and sensitive active layer of the electrode. In the case that the tube contains argon, one can use, for example, pressures of about 8 mm.
A practical embodiment for a voltage of 110 volts is obtained if one chooses a tube length of 15 cm measured between the electrodes for the type of gas just mentioned, the gas pressure mentioned and a tube diameter of 30 mm.
In addition to the gases, for example argon, one or more vaporizable metals, for example mercury, cadmium and zinc, can also be introduced into the tube. Several vaporizable metals are generally used to produce a mixed light. It is usually not advisable to introduce excessive amounts of metal into the tube. Rather, it is generally advisable to use just such amounts of metal, in particular, for example, mercury, which are sufficient to generate a high pressure so that the metals are completely evaporated during high pressure operation.
The drawing shows an example embodiment of the subject matter of the invention.
In the drawing, a discharge tube be made of glass r is shown. The tube contains two electrodes e ,. and e., which are provided with a strongly electron-emitting substance, such as barium oxide, and can be heated by the discharge, that is, no special heating current independent of the discharge is passed through the electrodes, but these are generated by the discharge current heated.
The tube wall is covered on the outside with a conductive coating b, which is electrically connected to the power supply wires of the two electrodes and is interrupted at s near one of the electrodes. The tube is constricted near the electrodes at d, which brings the layer closer to the electrodes. The tube is expediently constricted to the extent that it is just possible without the wall becoming inadmissible. This measure effectively facilitates ignition, not only at low gas pressures, but also at higher pressures, for example with 8 mm argon. .
The wall covering is designed to be wide, extends over: about one third to half of the total surface of the tube and is made of silver, thus forming a reflector. A width of 2 to 2.5 mm has been found to be a favorable width of the interruption s in the covering when it is attached to the outside of the vessel and a wall thickness of about 0.5 mm.
The wall covering can optionally also be configured like a network.
For the upstream connection for the tube according to the invention, for example, choke coils or simply ohmic resistors come into question, respectively, as incandescent lamps for ultrared radiation. to generate mixed light or as ferrous hydrogen resistors to keep the current strength constant.
