Process for modifying the structure and improving the mechanical properties of aluminum or aluminum-containing alloys. The present invention relates to a method for modifying the structure and improving the mechanical properties of aluminum or aluminum-containing alloys, which are particularly suitable for use as construction metal, with high requirements in terms of tensile strength, ductility, yield point and vibration resistance nen.
The process is based on the knowledge that such metals can improve their mechanical properties, for example by increasing the dispersion of their structure. Refining processes have already been used, in particular for the production of high-quality aluminum-silicon alloys, which are based on the introduction of an alkali metal such as sodium or of alkali compounds such as sodium fluoride, sodium hydroxide and the like into the molten starting alloy. It has also been proposed to use this method on non-siliconized aluminum alloys.
It was found, however, that only those alkali compounds are suitable for influencing the structure of the aluminum alloys, which decompose at the melting temperature with the separation of the free alkali metal, for example sodium. Accordingly, the fluorides, hydrates, oxides and the like were proposed as alkali compounds.
Alkali carbonates have already been used for this purpose, but experience has shown that the decomposition temperature of these substances is only at a significantly higher temperature, so that the alloys refined with alkali carbonate have other unfavorable phenomena due to the high treatment temperature, for example increased porosity, exhibited.
The method according to the present invention is now characterized in that the molten aluminum BEZW. the aluminum-containing alloys are treated with a mixture of substances containing a fluoride, which by itself does not cause an improvement, and an alkali carbonate.
Such fluorides are, for example, the double fluorides of the alkali metals, such as sodium aluminum fluoride, sodium silicofluoride, furthermore alkaline earth fluorides, such as calcium fluoride, barium fluoride and then aluminum fluoride, magnesium fluoride and finally also fluorides of the heavy metals, such as magnesium fluoride and the like.
While these fluorides, when used alone, show no ennobling effect, it has surprisingly been found that they are decomposed in a mixture with alkali carbonate at the normal treatment temperature of about 900 and, on the other hand, decompose alkali carbonate and so one compared to the to previous methods exert an increased effect on the dispersion of the metal structure. It is not known in detail what the heightened combination effect is based on just such terms by reaction with one another decomposing mixtures of fluorides and carbonates.
It is only assumed that the formation of alkali fluorides with simultaneous development of carbonic acid is decisive for the effects occurring according to the invention.
The alkali metal carbonates to be used according to the invention as a mixture with fluoride can also be used individually or as a mixture with one another. Among these alkali carbonates, for example, lithium carbonate deserves special mention because it can exert a great influence on the dispersion of alloy components such as iron, copper and the like.
The previously used alloys for cleaning the melts of non-metallic impurities, as well as for dissolving the aluminum oxides, such as alkali chlorides and calcium fluorides, do not work within the meaning of the present invention. but only cause mechanical cleaning and are therefore only to be used as flux or cover salts.
In the case of aluminum-containing alloys with a higher melting point, such as aluminum bronzes, aluminum-containing types of steel or aluminum-containing precious metal alloys, the substance mixture is expediently used without any further addition. When treating aluminum melts and aluminum alloys with a high aluminum content, however, it has proven to be advantageous to add substances to the mixture of substances that lower the melting temperature of the mixture.
Alkali metal chlorides, for example a mixture of 60 parts of potassium chloride and 40 parts of sodium chloride, of which about 30 parts are added to 100 parts of the fluoride-carbonate mixture, are primarily suitable. Borates and other fluxes known per se can also be used advantageously.
The use of the substance mixture is particularly advantageous, for example, to increase the dispersion of aluminum-silicon alloys, in which, apart from silicon, other alloy components, such as iron and possibly copper, can be brought into finely divided form. It has been shown so far that the iron content in both ternary and multicomponent aluminum-silicon alloys must be kept very low, that is, should not rise above 0.6% if possible, since otherwise an adverse effect on elongation becomes noticeable .
The method according to the invention now has the considerable advantage that the production of high quality alloys is not subject to conditions such as quantitative content, usability of certain metals and the like at all or. makes dependent to a degree, as is the case with the previously known ennobling processes.
For example, while the prerequisite for achieving flawless, iron-containing aluminum-silicon alloys was that the iron content might not exceed 0.6 X0, which meant that considerable proportions of the raw aluminum produced could not be used the invention even doubles the iron content and, among other things, makes it possible to use considerable, previously unusable amounts of output materials for the production of high-quality alloys.
Also the aluminum alloys with 12-13% silicon and approx. 12-13% silicon, which are preferred in particular for aircraft engines with a light construction due to their high vibration resistance. 0.8% copper and optionally 0.2 to 0.5% manganese can be greatly improved by treating with the mixture of substances. In particular, the increased tendency to pore formation that is noticeable in these copper-containing alloys is suppressed, so that they are also more suitable for the manufacture of cylinder blocks, cylinder heads and the like, for which they are due to their high hardness, good machinability and high elasticity resistance against other alloys earn on preference.
Here, too, the copper content can significantly exceed the previously usual limit of 0.8%, thereby significantly increasing the particularly desired vibration resistance and resistance to warping. The process is also very suitable for the treatment of high silicon alloys, which are mainly used with contents of over 1.5%, for example 20 to 30% silicon for the manufacture of cylinder pistons and similar structural parts.
The following example is used to explain how the process is carried out.
An aluminum alloy containing about 13% silicon with an iron content of 1.14% was mixed with a mixture consisting of 5 parts calcium fluoride and 6.51 parts sodium carbonate (ie roughly in a stoichiometric ratio to each other), which was pulverized after melting was transferred. The proportion of this mixture was about 11/2 ö of the weight of the treated alloy. After solidification, the alloy showed: a fine distribution of all alloy components and, in the mechanical test, showed a strength of over 20 kg / mm @ and an elongation of 5 to 6%. The amounts of the mixture used are generally about 0.5 to 3%.
The method can also be used immediately after the electrolytic representation of the primary aluminum or aluminum-containing alloys. The procedure here is that an appropriate proportion of alkali carbonate is added to the common fluorides, for example electrolytes containing cryolite, so that the substance mixture is formed using an already existing liquid electrolyte salt.
This then reacts with the alkali carbonate and the alloys treated in this way show the same favorable properties as if the treatment was carried out independently of the electrolysis in a special process.
As further examples of mixtures of substances as they can be used according to the method of the invention, the following may be mentioned Example I: Of the mixture:: 50 grams of potassium and .50 grams of sodium chloride 8 grams of calcium fluoride 5 grams of sodium carbonate 6.5 gr Example II: From the mixture:
42 grams of sodium aluminum fluoride and 32 grams of sodium carbonate 1.8.5 grams of 50 grams of sodium and 50 grams of potassium chloride 8 grams Example III:
Sodium chloride 20.5% Potassium chloride 20.5% Calcium fluoride 92.5.6% Sodium carbonate 33.4% Whereas previously - great care had to be taken when dimensioning an additive of free alkali metal and the quantities used could not exceed 0.1%, otherwise strong pore formation would occur,
Particularly when improving silicon-containing aluminum alloys by means of the novel substance mixture, a combination of the refinement process using a substance mixture on the one hand and treatment with sodium on the other hand, also using increased sodium additives, can be carried out. If, for example, the mixture of substances is melted and the sodium is inserted through the molten salt into the alloy, then even with an increased addition of sodium, for example up to 0.6%, a dispersion of the alloy constituents succeeds without the previously observed effect Pore formation occurs.
As a result, the structure of the silicon-containing aluminum alloys with silicon contents of 5 to 15% is made much finer than was previously known. A substantial improvement in the elongation is thereby achieved. For example, a casting alloy with 13% silicon, which has been refined with 0.1% addition of sodium, has an elongation of approximately 7%, while after refining with an addition of 0.3% in the presence of the invention, it can be used Mixture of substances has an elongation of about 10%.
