Process for the production of white enamels and glazes. The invention relates to the manufacture of white opacified enamels and glazes by gas opacity, that is, by using decomposable gas-releasing substances as opacifiers, such as the subject of patents No. 136316, No. 135754 and No. 135688. The aim of the invention is to achieve a regular distribution of the opacifier in the enamel slip, which causes optimal opacity.
According to the invention, this is achieved in that the gas opacifiers are mixed with such enamel frits which have the property of distributing themselves at least almost collcidally in the slip.
The at least almost colloidal distribution of such frits in the slip has the effect that the entire frit in the enamel slip is made effective for the distribution of the gas opacification agent.
The invention also avoids an inconvenience which is caused by the fact that, due to the lack of a fine distribution of the gas opacifier or its adsorption compound, gas bubbles which are too large develop from the gas opacifier during decomposition.
Large gas bubbles, which in themselves are less turbid than smaller gas bubbles, and at higher baking temperatures and baking times, which cannot be avoided in practice, result in further enlargement of the gas bubbles or the transition of gas bubbles into one another to decreases in turbidity and even to breakthroughs the enamel surface.
The fine distribution of the gas opacifying agent also provides a means of increasing the number of gas bubbles on the one hand and also a means of allowing the gas bubbles to develop only in such a size that the gas bubbles also subsequently increase in size when the enamel is overburned does not affect the turbidity.
The invention also enables the opacifying effect to be increased in those processes in which compounds or complexes containing volatile components or substances with volatile components are made from solid white opacifiers (such as, for example, tin oxide, zirconium oxide or the like) a gas opacity is developed in a mixture with solid opacifiers.
Such gas-releasing compounds or complexes which can be obtained by methods known per se are, for example, the zirconium, tin, and antimony compounds of organic acids or bases.
The production of enamel frits, which can be distributed at least almost colloidally in the slip, can take place by mechanical measures, such as grinding on colloid mills. For the method according to the invention, however, frits that are made by chemical or colloidal chemical measures, such as in particular by changing the chemical composition of the enamel raw mixture, it can be distributed at least almost colloidally, so that the frit can be distributed colloidally even with normal grinding. If necessary, several such measures can be carried out simultaneously. be applied.
Whether a ground frit is already at least almost colloidal can be externally recognized by the fact that the frit ground with water is standing without the addition of plasticizers.
A colloidal frit can be obtained by chemical measures, such as by increasing the addition of fluorine-containing substances in the enamel, that is in the unmelted raw mixture. So for the method according to the invention enamel sets are double the usual fluorine content of normal enamel sets (that is about 5% fluorine-containing enamel sets) but in the form of a fluorine compound other than cryolite, for example 10% fluorine and also more included, suitable.
Of the fluorine-containing substances, the addition of silicofluoroalkali, such as silicofluorosodium, has proven particularly useful. The use of such frits, which can be colloidally distributed in particular by changing the chemical composition, has the advantage that the enamel is not sensitive to cracking when it is burned and is not as sensitive as normal enamel sets when the enamel is overburned.
The use of frits in an at least nearly colloidal state is also associated with the advantage that the reputation of such enamels is enhanced.
When carrying out the process, the enamel frit can be ground in the mill with water and clay in the usual way with the addition of the opacifier and, if necessary, other additives and used in the usual way. However, clay can also be added to the mill at a later point in time during the grinding, which sometimes has the advantage that the clay is not ground too long and not too finely.
Example: The following email mixture is fritted:

<tb> Saltpeter <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP> 4.2 <SEP> "
<tb> Calcite <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP> <I> 27 </I> <SEP> 1,6 <SEP> "

<tb> quartz <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>. <SEP>.
<SEP> 25.7 <SEP> "However, the melting process should not be carried out for too long and not at too high a temperature, since these two measures reduce the desired success, apparently by reducing the fluorine content.
1000 g of this frit, which can already be distributed colloidally through normal grinding, is ground with 0.34 g methylene blue and 60 to 120 g clay normal to the usual grinding fineness, applied normally and burned.
Instead of methylene blue, any other substances that decompose at the stoving temperature can of course be used as gas opacifiers. Solid white opacifiers such as tin, zirconium compounds or the like with volatile components can also be used as gas opacifiers.
