Process for the production of castings from nagnesium alloys in permanent molds. For the production of sand castings from high-percentage magnesium alloys, alloys have hitherto predominantly been used which, in addition to magnesium, contain either aluminum alone or aluminum and zinc together, in amounts of up to about 10 0/0 of the total alloy,
where, in the case of the use of magnesium-aluminum-zinc alloys, the zinc content is measured at at least 3 %. It is also known that alloys of magnesium with between 1,
5 and 14% aluminum and 0.76 and 6 '/ o zinc, in addition to other possible uses, are suitable for casting in molds, according to the state of the art at the moment According to the publication in question, it can be assumed that only sand molds were intended.
When using magnesium alloys for the production of castings, d. b. of castings with pronounced profiling and - different wall thicknesses in permanent molds (chill and injection molding), however, two demands are placed on the alloys to a greater extent, which when used for the manufacture of sand castings are of much less importance.
On the one hand, the alloys must be liquid as thinly as possible in order to allow the mold to be completely filled despite the rapid cooling due to the metallic mold walls. On the other hand, however, they must also be able to absorb the stresses that occur when the castings solidify in the inflexible shape without endangering their cohesion.
In order to increase the thin liquid to the desired extent, it has been found that it is necessary to increase the foreign metal content of the alloy to close to the upper limit of the range found to be suitable for sand castings, d. to be measured to approximately 10 %.
But even with this content of foreign metals, the alloys of aluminum with aluminum alone, for example with contents of 8 to 10 > aluminum, also have alloys in which the zinc content 3 '/ o and more and the aluminum content is accordingly around 4-6' / o, relatively low elongation values at higher temperatures, so that the workpieces get shrinkage cracks when they stiffen in the unyielding shape .
The resulting task of finding alloys with sufficient light liquid and at the same time higher elongation values at higher temperatures has now found a solution according to the invention in that such magnesium alloys are selected for the production of molded castings in permanent molds that have an aluminum content that corresponds to at least the upper limit of the solubility of aluminum in the solid state at room temperature - i.e. at least 7,
5 '/. Aluminum is - and only contains 1 to 2% zinc. In terms of casting technology, these alloys behave just as favorably as the known alloys with a relatively higher zinc content or with aluminum alone, but have significantly higher elongation values at higher temperatures, which can double to triple the amount with roughly the same foreign metal content,
so that the occurrence of shrinkage cracks on the castings significantly limited respectively. is turned off at all. On the other hand, under these circumstances it also turns out to be possible
possibly - for example in the production of particularly thin-walled castings - the total content of foreign metals without deterioration of the previous elongation values at higher temperatures for the purpose of further increasing the fluidity of the alloy a little higher than before the upper limit of 10 '/ o for the foreign metal content, for example alloys with 10 ' / o aluminum with the simultaneous presence of 1 1 / o zinc should be used.
In particular, the following alloys have proven to be particularly favorable: 8.5 '/ o aluminum, 1.5 ' / o zinc, the remainder magnesium, 10%. Aluminum, 1 % zinc, the remainder magnesium.
These alloys can of course also be used for the production of castings in sand molds.
