Phonograms and method of making the same. The present invention relates to a sound carrier which is characterized by the fact that the sound is registered on it according to one method according to its height and according to another method according to its volume. and to a method used to produce this sound carrier, which in turn is characterized in that the sound to be registered is amplified in order to generate a current with a constant amplitude, said current using a method and a current using the amplification changes, which is required to produce the constant amplitude, is registered according to a different method.
In the accompanying drawings, two exemplary embodiments of the sound carrier according to the invention are illustrated, as well as two different apparatuses used to carry out the method.
Fig. I shows a fragment of a clay film in which the pitch is registered by varying density and the volume by varying area; Fig. 2 shows a fragment of another sound film in which the pitch is registered by variable area and the volume by variable density; FIG. 3 schematically shows an apparatus for producing the sound film according to FIG. 1, and FIG. 4 shows, in a manner similar to FIG. 3, an apparatus for producing the film according to FIG.
In Fig. 1, a speech-image film 10 is shown, which has a sound recording section 11 on one side. This sound recording is of the variable density type, and it is noted that the recording density changes from a maximum density to a minimum density for each frequency.
In order to regulate the volume, the effective area of the sound recording is changed from the full width in section 12, where the sound is assumed to be Forte, to the narrowest width in section 13, where the sound to be reproduced is assumed to be pianissimo is.
When light passes through the sound recording 11 and falls on a photoelectric cell, and the current generated in the cell is amplified and reproduced through a suitable loudspeaker, it is clear that the light falling on the photoelectric cell when passing through the section the current caused by the sound recording 12 fluctuations, the greatest possible change in the loudspeaker current, and therefore produce a sound of greatest strength. If, on the other hand, the light falling on the cell passes through the receptacle in the section 13 and the current changes are fed to the loudspeaker, the sound produced will be a minimum.
It should be noted, however, that the ratio of the sound flow to the background noise flow is kept constant at all times, i.e. the dust and grain irregularities that pass through the film in section-13- of the recording Affect light, affect the total amount of light only in the same ratio as in section 12.
In other words, with this recording sent through a sound reproducing apparatus, even if the background noise in section 12 will be significant, the sound generated by the Tonänderun conditions will be a large part larger, so that the ratio between the Tone and the background noise remains constant. In the portion of the recording 13 there will be a very greatly reduced background noise effect, and all of the sound produced by the recording will be reduced, but they will both be reduced in approximately the same ratio.
In FIG. 2, the tone stripe 11 of the film 10 is shown as a variable area image, and the bright changes in the film are shown as they change in density from the lowest density in FIG. 12 to the highest density in FIG. The explanations regarding the sound changes reproduced by this recording are the same as those regarding FIG. 1.
It can be seen that while the light fluctuations falling on the photoelectric cell through section 12 of the receptacle are a maximum, and the fluctuations generated by the light passing through section 13 are a minimum, the background noise effect in section 12 is a maximum is, while the basic noise effect in the section 13 is a minimum.
The shading of the light section of the film can be chosen so that the above-mentioned ratio between sound and noise remains approximately constant and it is represented as well as possible in such a way that it causes the same absorption of light as it is due to the narrowing of the film the film recording of Fig. 1 is generated. When reproducing these two types, the light is simply sent through the Tonauf acquisition in the usual way, and the reproduction is otherwise exactly the same as in the usual sound reproduction of a moving speech film.
The only difference is that the gain of the control device is set so that the greatest desired effect is obtained when a light section or a full width or a largest volume section of the receptacle passes through the machine. The film then actively regulates the volume of the display entirely by regulating the amount of light that falls on the photoelectric device. An apparatus which is suitable for the production of the sound film shown in FIG. 2 is illustrated schematically in FIG.
In this apparatus, the current picked up by the microphone 41 is amplified by the amplifier 43 and used to regulate the shutter or galvanometer 45 of the transducer in the usual manner; in addition, amplifier regulating means 44 are provided in order to ensure that the shutter or galvanometer works with the greatest amplitude at all times.
The measure of the increase in regulation of the current, which is necessary to bring about the greatest actuation of the shutter or galvanometer, is used to reciprocally change the strength of the recording light so that, when the recorded sound is at its greatest and a very low gain is required to operate the recording shutter to the maximum, the recording light source 46 is in full brilliance, w:
However, when the recorded sound is smallest and a large amount of amplification is required to operate the shutter at full capacity, the intensity of the light is reduced. The reciprocal amplifier 47 is used to supply the recording light source 46 with the correct term. The film 40 is the negative record of the film shown in Fig. 2 Darge and as a result the Dar position of light and shadow in this is reversed as in Fig. 2.
The recording of the sound film shown in FIG. 1 is practically just as simple as that of the sound film according to FIG. 2, and can be accomplished, for example, by means of the apparatus shown in FIG.
In this apparatus, the amplified recording current is used to regulate the intensity of the light 36, and the amplification of the current required to produce a full fluctuation of the light is used to regulate the shutter 35, whichever the latter is used to let through part of the image in order to cause the fluctuations in the width of the recording strip 38 of the sound film 30 in motion. As shown, a reciprocally regulated auxiliary amplifier 37 is employed.
In the present case, the shutter is arranged in such a way that it reduces the width of the sound path 32 to the minimum when the greatest amplification of the weakest signal generated by the microphone 31 is caused in the amplifier 34. Under these conditions, of course, most of the control current is used to regulate the intensity of the light from the light source 36, and therefore the smallest part of the current flows to the shutter 35.
It is understood that the auxiliary amplifier 37 can be omitted and the shutter 35 can be arranged in such a way that the smallest sound recording width is generated with the smallest supplied current.
