Abstract

20,798. Stocks, H. B. Oct. 10. Optical; records, optical.-In optical phonographic recording apparatus, a travelling photographic film is acted upon by a beam of light the area and intensity of which are varied by the sound waves. As shown in Fig. 1, a microphone a is in circuit with, or is inductively connected to, a magnet b placed adjacent to a mercury-vapour lamp e, as described in Specification 1364/04. The voice currents thus vary the luminosity of the lamp e, and also its resistance. The circuit of the lamp e includes another magnet f which, by acting on a sliding plate h having a V-shaped upper edge, controls the opening between it and a fixed plate and so varies the width of the beam of light passing through to a film travelling behind the shutter. The film record thus obtained comprises a strip of varying width and varying transparency. To reproduce, the film is passed between a light and a selenium cell in circuit with a telephone receiver. A mercury-vapour lamp may be employed as a relay between the selenium cell and the receiver. The phonograph may be operated in conjunction with a kinematograph machine.
