Process for the production of condensation products by condensation of dieyandiamide with formaldehyde. Wallasch has through condensation of dieyandiamide and formaldehyde in the presence of acids or else. without condensation, oily liquids or glutinous substances were obtained that he intended to use as a substitute for glycerine or as water-soluble adhesives (DRP. 323 665 and 325 647 from 1919).
About eight years later, the inventor found that this reaction, under suitable conditions, leads to condensation products of the nature of "hardenable" resins, which under the combined or separate action of heat and pressure turn into infusible and insoluble synthetic materials.
The surprising observation was made that dicyandiamide, if heated with formaldehyde for a long enough time, produces a hydrophobic resin that separates out of the reaction mixture when it cools and turns into a powder on contact with water, which dries quickly and evenly and in this Condition represents an excellent press powder.
From mixtures of dicyandiamide and other substances which, with formaldehyde, give resin-like condensation products (such as urea, thiourea, phenols or cresols), mixed colloids could be produced by this process, which are very similar to the uniform dicyandiamide-formaldehyde condensation product (British patent 287177) cautiously.
Furthermore, shortly afterwards, by the action of formaldehyde on dicyandiamide with simultaneous or subsequent formation of a protein-formaldehyde condensation product, with or without the use of an acidic or alkaline condensation agent, plastics were produced whose mass was wholly or partly composed of mixed colloids of dicyandiamide - formaldehyde condensation products and protein formaldehyde condensation products is built up (British patent document 323047).
The mixed colloids obtained in this way are also preferably used to produce press mixes for hot-press technology.
Somewhat later, it was proposed by others to use the condensation of dicyandiamide and formaldehyde for the production of curable synthetic resins (British patent specification 314358). In this known process, however, it is about obtaining hydrophilic condensation products as they arise under mild working conditions (brief heating to temperatures below 100). The condensation products produced in this way remain dissolved when the reaction mixture cools; the solution must be evaporated to obtain the resin.
The direct production of hydrophobic reaction products naturally offers significant advantages not only with regard to the manufacture of the resins and their further processing, but also with regard to the nature of the end product. The hydrophobic resins of this type have all the properties that are important for the production of high-speed molding compounds.
They can be brought to a high and thoroughly uniform state of polymerization by further heating, mixed homogeneously as liquid resins with fibers and fillers, and further polymerized in the mixture by continued heating, so that the hot pressing then essentially only serves the mechanical shaping . Finally, these condensation products are still flowable even in the state of the highest polymerization stage if, during the drying of these resins, which release the last portions of the water very easily, it is ensured that a certain small portion of the water remains in the mass.
In spite of all these highly valuable properties, however, continued research on these new aminoplasts has shown that the end products do not have the degree of insensitivity to water that was to be expected given the particularly hydrophobic nature of the condensation products.
After numerous attempts it has now been possible to find the cause of this phenomenon and to eliminate this deficiency in the original process for the production of hydrophobic resins by condensation of dicyandiarnide and formaldehyde.
The method according to the invention, which leads to this goal, consists essentially in the condensation being carried out while maintaining a hydrogen ion concentration which is lower than the value ph = 5, most expediently with a hydrogen ion concentration between ph: - 8 and ph = 10.
It has been found that the dicyarrdiamide is converted into dicyandiamidine even at a hydrogen ion concentration which is slightly higher than the neutral reaction (ph = 7).
This dicyandiamidine is a very hygroscopic substance, the presence of which in the end product has a very unfavorable effect on its consistency. This is the reason why, even if the condensation is carried out without the addition of condensing agents, in the presence of the small amounts of formic acid that the commercially available aqueous formaldehyde solution contains, end products are obtained that do not have the required high degree of insensitivity to pale.
If, on the other hand, the condensation is carried out in the designated h range, a hydrophobic resin is produced which is ideally suited for the production of molding compounds of all types. The condensation also proceeds surprisingly quickly in this h region.
To carry out the process, the condensation is allowed to proceed, for example in the presence of corresponding amounts of substances which split off hydrogyl ions, the addition of a buffer mixture which is effective in the indicated h range is recommended. Under these working conditions, when the reaction mixture is boiled for three quarters of an hour, a reaction mixture is formed which becomes cloudy in the heat and from which a viscous hydrophobic resin precipitates on cooling.
For further processing, you can now separate the hydrophobic resin by letting the mixture cool or by adding water, then washing it, melting it again and mixing it with fibrous materials of any kind (vegetable, mineral or animal origin). Instead, the original reaction mixture, if a sample shows that the hydrophobic resin that precipitates on cooling is formed, can be mixed directly with fibrous materials in a kneading machine or in a rolling mill.
In any case, the mixture is then heated until the desired degree of polymerization has been achieved, whereupon it becomes dry, and finally subjected to the combined or separate action of heat and pressure.
The condensation can also be carried out at temperatures below the boiling point of the formaldehyde solution. On the other hand, it can also be accomplished with advantage under increased pressure.
It was also found that the nature of the end products results from the incorporation of metal salts such as copper sulfate, zinc chloride, lead nitrate, nickel sulfate, cobalt chloride, aluminum sulfate, tin chloride, barium chloride or mercury chloride in the condensation products respectively Press powder can be improved considerably.
The effect of these additives should mainly be based on the bond of dicyandiamidine, which has been formed despite the specified Arbeitsbedin conditions; It can also be assumed that these salts have a coagulating effect. Embodiments:
1. 84 grams of dicyandiamide are dissolved in 150 grams of 30% formaldehyde solution (which corresponds to a ratio of 1 mol of dicyandiamide to 1/2 mol of formaldehyde), whereupon 20 cubic meters of 1/10 N sodium hydroxide solution are added to the solution.
This reaction batch is now coked for three quarters of an hour. After this time, a strongly hydrophobic resin that precipitates in the cold has formed. The solution is mixed in a kneading egg with 84 g of cellulose without prior cooling, with or without the application of a vacuum.
The mixture obtained in this way is heated, at most in two temperature stages, for the purpose of polymerization and drying, where there must be enough water left to ensure sufficient flowability in the hot press. The favorable final water content is around 5%. Any quantities and types of pigments or dyes can be incorporated into the pale.
In this way, press mixtures are obtained, which in the hot press with a short pressing time deliver molded pieces that show only very little water absorption when lying in the water and can therefore be used for a wide variety of electrical and industrial purposes.
2. 63 grams of dicyandiamide are dissolved in 150 grams of 30% formaldehyde solution (which corresponds to a ratio of 1 mole of dicyandiamide to 2 moles of formaldehyde) and, after adding 40 one 1/10 N sodium hydroxide solution, kept at 80 ° C. for 13/4 hours. The further processing takes place exactly according to example 1.
3. For example, 1-2% tin chloride can be introduced together with the pigment into the press mixes, which are produced according to Examples 1 and 2.
4. Instead of a hot-press mixture, a cold-press mixture can be produced in such a way that the polymerization and drying are only continued to such an extent that a mass that can be molded at lower temperatures is obtained, which is only completely dried and polymerized after the molding.
5. Instead of a homogeneous press mixture, layered substances can also be obtained in such a way that paper or textiles of all kinds are impregnated with the reaction solution in the initial or final state. Polymerization of the binding agent in the plate press can be hot-pressed.
