Process for the production of aluminum alloys. Subject of patent no.146044. is a process according to which an aluminum with special properties, in particular a particularly uniform behavior during casting and mechanical processing, as well as particularly high corrosion resistance, is obtained by reducing aluminum compounds in such a way that such aluminum compounds subject to reduction,
which are produced from raw materials containing alumina by treatment with alkaline reacting alkali compounds, and that in the production of the compounds subjected to the reduction process for the aluminum produced, in addition to alkaline reacting compounds of an alkali metal, at least one other alkali metal was also used.
When working according to the process of this patent, you are able to use suitable combinations of the compounds mentioned of two or more alkali metals, for example sodium and potassium or sodium, potassium and lithium as a disintegrant for the mineral raw materials, the nature of to largely influence aluminum produced from intermediate products produced in this way.
According to the present invention, aluminum alloys are produced, which are also distinguished from the aluminum alloys produced in the previously known manner by their particularly favorable mechanical properties, great uniformity during casting and, in particular, by high corrosion resistance, in such a way that aluminum is used methods known per se, for example by fusing them with one or more other metals or other substances capable of forming alloys, with both the aluminum and the other alloy components in a manner known per se by reducing compounds of these Substances are produced,
and at least those subjected to the reduction process to produce the aluminum. Compounds have been obtained by treating mineral raw materials with alkaline-reacting alkali-metal compounds, with the proviso that in the production of the intermediate products subjected to the reduction process (taken as a whole), apart from alkaline-reacting compounds of an alkali metal, at least one other alkali metal has also been used.
According to the invention - one can proceed, for example, in such a way that aluminum, which is at least partially produced by reduction from intermediate products, is obtained from mineral, alumina-containing raw materials by treatment with the hydroxyls, oxides or carbonates or mixtures of such compounds at least two different alkali metals are produced, bring them together with other alloy components by melting them down, whereby these other alloy components can be obtained by reduction from any starting materials or, if necessary, also from intermediate products,
which are made from mineral raw materials by treatment with oxides, hydroxides or carbonates or mixtures of such compounds of various alkali metals.
Or it can also be done in such a way that aluminum, which is produced by reduction from intermediate products, is at least partly obtained from raw mineral products by treatment with the oxide, hydroxide or carbonate or a mixture of these compounds of an alkali metal, for example sodium, are produced, for example, by melting together is combined with at least one partial or non-metallic alloy component, such as titanium, zirconium, boron and the like, which is produced by reduction from intermediate products obtained from mineral raw materials by treatment with the Oxide,
Hydroxide or carbonate or a mixture of these connec tions of at least one other alkali metal, for example potassium, are produced.
In all cases, the use of the compounds of the two or more alkali metals in the production process of both the aluminum and the other alloy constituents can be carried out in such a way that compounds of two or more alkali metals are used simultaneously or one after the other to produce one and the same, later to produce the the metal component concerned, for example a sodium potassium aluminate or a sodium potassium titanate, or for example in such a way that an intermediate product,
which is made from the mineral raw material using alkaline compounds or mixtures of compounds of only one alkali metal, such as sodium aluminate, together with an intermediate product which is made from the mineral raw material using alkaline compounds of another alkali metal, such as potassium aluminate, is used to produce the alloy component in question.
The reduction of the various alloy constituents to be united can take place separately from, as well as at the same place and simultaneously with the union of the same, for example in such a way that one is made from sodium aluminate or from sodium potassium aluminate obtained alumina together with oxides of the additives, for example titanium oxide, zirconium oxide, boron oxide, silicon oxide and the like, which are obtained from the mineral raw materials of the additives concerned,
for example by treatment with hydrates or carbonates of at least one other alkali metal via intermediate products such as potassium titanate or potassium sodium titanate, potassium borate or potassium sodium borate or the like, thermal reduction, for example with coal, or electrolysis, for example from:
a solution in a melt of fluorides or double fluorides.
The proportions of the alkalis used for the manufacture of the intermediate products can, as also according to the process of the main patent, fluctuate within considerable limits. In general, one can proceed in such a way that mainly compounds of sodium and those of potassium are used only in additional amounts, whereby oxides,
Hydroxydo or carbonates of the alkali metals concerned can be used side by side or in a mixture. In general, compounds of the highly electropositive Ka should always be used. Of these, amounts of, for example, 2 of the total alkali compounds used are sufficient; however, considerably larger amounts of it can also be used, for example up to 50 or more of the total alkali compounds used.
Other alkali compounds that can be used in the context of the invention are primarily those of lithium, the oxide, hydroxide or carbonate of which can be used in conjunction with the oxides, hydroxides or carbonates, for example sodium or potassium, or both.
The amounts of the lithium compounds to be used are very small compared to those of the other alkali metals; they do not amount to more than 5% of the total and should generally be kept below 39o 'of the same.
In addition, the proportions of the alkali compounds are to be adapted to the desired properties of the aluminum alloy, in particular taking into account the intended use (for example as castable, rollable alloys, etc.).
The process described allows not only to produce aluminum alloys that do not show the irregularities often observed in casting or other processing, but are characterized in all cases by an extremely uniform behavior and in particular by a surprisingly high corrosion resistance, but rather it also allows the properties of the alloys produced to be largely adapted to the particular properties of the products that may be desired in each case and, in particular, to easily produce high-quality, heat-treatable aluminum alloys.
