Electric discharge tube. The invention relates to an electric discharge tube.
In certain cases, an electric discharge tube is provided with an electrode that has sharp protrusions, points or sharp edges. Such an electrode is referred to in the following with the name "sharp electrode". If you give such an electrode an electric charge, the electric field is concentrated strongly on these protrusions. In this way, when the mentioned electrode is negatively charged, electrons can be drawn out of the surface of the electrode by the electrical field and so, at a sufficiently low gas pressure, a discharge current can be generated between two cold electrodes.
The invention relates to an electrical discharge tube with a sharp elec trode, in which the sharp electrode at least one part of a body of revolution bil det. and in which the effective surface of this electrode appears to be serrated in the axial section of the electrode. This has the great advantage that such an electrode can be produced in a simple manner using a lathe.
Such an electrode can act as a cathode of a rectifier: one in which it works together with another electrode which has a smooth surface, i.e. not provided with sharp projections, the shape of which follows that of the surface of the revolution of the sharp electrode adapts.
The sharp elevations on the method can close in circles; e-s 1-t however, it is advisable to give them the shape of a helix. Such an electrode can be produced in a very simple manner by the known screw thread cutting process, for example by using a lathe with a progressive cutting tool.
The shape of the sharp electrode can be cylindrical, but it can also be other lioritioic shapes. for example the spherical shape can be used.
It can be particularly useful to make the electrode conical and in this case the distance between the two interacting elelium and troclexi surfaces can be adjusted by axially displacing them with respect to one another.
The discharge tube according to the invention can be designed in such a way that it is particularly suitable for rectifying ZV ec hsel- strörnen, which is achieved, for example, by the fact that the sharp electrode on its surface is made of a material with a larger electron-emitting substance Ability exist than at the same temperature the electrode, which should be effective as an anode.
The drawing illustrates an exemplary embodiment from a discharge tube according to the invention. This tube has a glass part 1. are attached to the cylindrical metal electrodes 2 and 3 by melting. These cylinders are coaxially arranged and have a small gap of a few millimeters.
The electrode 2, which at the same time forms part of the outer wall of the whole, consists, for example, of a chrome iron alloy whose electron-emitting ability is very weak compared to most other metals and which can be easily melted onto glass and is not very porous.
The electrode 3 also has a chrome iron part, which is fused to the edge of the inwardly bent part of the glass wall and surrounded by a part -1, in aluminum, which has proven to be a very suitable material for use as a cathode material, and from electrons can be released more easily than from chrome iron. This aluminum part is provided with a sharp screw thread, which lies opposite the flat inner wall of the electrode, and forms the effective part of the electrode 3. The chrome iron part of this electrode is used to enable the connection with the glass.
An electron discharge now takes place between the anode and the raised areas of the sharp electrode 3. if a voltage difference is placed between the two electrodes, namely the electron current flows from the electrode 3 to the electrode? if the first mentioned negatively charged or if a changing voltage difference is added. In the latter case, the tube acts as a rectifier.
After the tube has been vented to such a high vacuum that noticeable ionization cannot occur, a rinsing glass being used if necessary, it is sealed at point 5. If necessary, the anode can be provided with a cooling jacket. In the exemplary embodiment, the cathode 3 has a cavity 6 to which a tubular power supply conductor 7 is connected. This facility is important for cooling the cathode, which is achieved by introducing a liquid or a gas into the cavity? he can follow.
The shape of the electrode 3, which is a cylinder in the example provided, can of course be chosen differently. If electrons 2 and 3 are designed to be conical, the space between the effective electrode surfaces can be adjusted by axially shifting these electrodes relative to one another. The surface of revolution of the electrode 3 does not have to be fully constant.
These electrodes can, for example, also consist of a semicircular cylinder, so that two electrodes can be produced in a single treatment by dividing a full cylinder into two parts. If desired, the screw thread can also be removed on part of the circumference.
The electrode? is closed at its lower end by a glass cap 8, which gives the opportunity to observe the position of the electrodes against each other and zii regulate. Metal coverings 9, 10 and 11 are attached over the various weld points between metal and glass, which are intended to protect these weld points from strong electrostatic loads.
Discharge tubes of the type described can advantageously be used for supplying rectified current to x-ray tubes, since they are suitable for very high voltages.
