Control panel. The present invention relates to a control panel comprising a plurality of electrical circuit breakers mounted in at least one row in a box-enclosure. This table shows at least one ventilation duct common to a row of circuit breakers, the latter being automatically tripped and enclosed in envelopes having exhaust openings for the gases emanating from the rupture arcs opening into the ventilation duct. common tilation.
The accompanying drawing shows, by way of example, one embodiment of the object (the of the present invention.
Fig. 1 is a front view of an electrical circuit breaker control panel with a closing door of the enclosure being removed to show the lower construction; Fig. 2 is a cross section through the control panel shown in FIG. 1, showing the electric circuit breakers in elevation and partially in section, and.
Fig. 3 is a cross section through one of the electrical circuit breakers showing the mechanism thereof in elevation.
The control panel shown with electrical circuit breakers comprises a metal enclosure 4 having a bottom wall 5, side walls 6 and an end wall 7, the side and end walls being provided with a flange projecting towards the end. interior 8, to which a front in the form of a frame 9 is removably attached. The front or frame 9 is provided with an opening 11 through which the circuit breakers of the control panel are accessible, the opening 11 being closed by a door 12 which is connected to the frame 9 by means of hinges.
The electrical conduits 13, 1-1 and 15 of an installation with three power supply conduits enter at the lower end of the casing 4 leaving the casing 16, the conduits 13 and 14 being connected to the main circuit breakers 17 and 18 having connection terminals 19 and 21 respectively, connected to the bus bars 22 and 23 respectively, while the duct 15 is connected to a neutral bus bar 24 mounted in the upper portion of the enclosure , as shown in fig. 1, and provided with a plurality of connection terminals 25,
to which the return lines of each branch line are connected.
A circuit breaker 26 is provided for each branch line, the circuits being arranged in pairs and their circuit breakers being connected to the separate bus bars 22 and 23. Where more than two branch line circuits are provided, the circuit breakers 26 are arranged in pairs in juxta position and constitute two vertical rows of switches, as shown in fig. 1. While branch line switches 26 are shown in the figure as being of the single pole type, it is evident that multi-pole circuit breakers could also be employed in a similar fashion when the circuit connections are made. ex terns desired make it desirable.
A circuit breaker construction will be described in what follows with reference to figs. 2 and 3. Each pair of circuit breakers is mounted on an insulating base 27 which, although it may be made in one piece, is here established in two interchangeable blocks, as shown in the drawing. Each block of the base 27 comprises a body of insulating material having a recess 28 in which the circuit breaker mechanism is mounted.
The two blocks constituting each insulating base 27 are identical in construction and are interchangeable, their adjacent ends being arranged to overlap as shown in FIG. 2, the blocks being connected together by means of screws 29 which pass through an insulating partition 31 in threaded metal parts 32. The insulating partition 31 formed of a row of separation blocks serves three purposes, namely: to joining the blocks of the bases 27, dividing the space between the circuit breaker housings described below into two longitudinal conduits common respectively to the circuit breakers of each row and supporting a common cover for the conduits thus formed.
The blocks of each base 27, after being connected to each other, are assembled on profiled bars in Z 33 which serve to. Assemble a plurality of base blocks in juxta position, as shown in fig. 1 and 2. After completing the assembly of the circuit-breakers on the bars 33, the whole assembly is placed in the box-enclosure 4, as a unit, fixing the profiled bars in Z 33 at the bottom of the box-enclosure by means of adjustable clamps 34. The circuit breakers used can be of any suitable type with automatic tripping.
Fig. 3 shows such a circuit breaker in which a contact terminal 35 is fixed in the recess 28 of the base 27 and is connected to the corresponding bus bar which extends through a recess 36 in the base 27 by means of fixing screw 37. A metal frame 38 is mounted on the base 27 and supports a flexible breaker arm 39 which is connected to. an arm 41 mounted on a pivoting shaft 42 carried by the frame 38. An operating lever 43 provided with an insulating handle 44 is rotatably mounted to rotate on a shaft 45 also carried by the frame 38.
An inverted V-shaped elbow lever 46 is rotatably mounted on the pivot shaft 47 carried by the frame 38 and cooperates with an arm 48 of a knee lever which is connected to the circuit breaker arm 41 via the switch arm. second knee arm 49, the toggle arms being articulated on a toggle pivot 51, to which a spring 52 is connected by one end, the other end of this spring being connected to the operating lever 43.
The angled lever 46 is detachably retained in the operating position by a bimetallic thermostatic latch 53 which is provided in the branch line circuit and which bends to the left when it heats up sufficiently to release. finally the elbow lever 46 when a large overload or a short circuit occurs. It will be noted that when the circuit breaker is in the position indicated in FIG. 3, the circuit breaker arm 39 carrying the eantac @ 54 is retained in the closed position by the aligned position of the knee arms 48 and 49.
A movement of the operating handle 44 to the left brings the upper end of the spring 52 past a center line passing through the knee pivot 51 and point 55 at which the elbow lever 46 engages the knee lever arm. 48. This movement forces the toggle arms 48, 49 to. collapse and the spring 52 then forces the circuit breaker arm 39 to rise sharply to the open position. The normal manual operation of the circuit breaker is accomplished by moving the operating handle 44 to the right or to the left, as the case may be.
When the elbow lever 46 which acts as a support for the toggle lever 48, 49 is released by virtue of the described deflection of the bimetal thermostatic latch 53, the spring 52 contracts and causes a right-hand rotation of the elbow lever 46 which allows the circuit breaker arm 39 to move suddenly to the open position, thus interrupting the circuit in dependence on an abnormal current condition.
An insulating cover 56 is provided to enclose the circuit breaker mechanism and this cover is provided with an opening 56a if killed. approximately in front of the circuit breaker contact 54, through which can escape the gases generated by the arc which develops during the separation of the contacts of the switch.
The cover 56 is provided with a slot 57 serving as a passage for the operating handle 44, which is provided with an arcuate segment 58 which serves to conceal the slot 57 and to prevent access to the mechanism below the handle. cover to. through the slot 57 as well as the exhaust of gases through the slot.
The cover 56 is connected to the base 27 by means of a screw 59 which extends through an opening 61 of the cover and passes into a threaded metal part 62 housed in the insulating base 27. The opening 61 is widened by 63 to receive the head of the screw 59 and also to receive a sealing composition 64, such as sealing wax. As a result of this construction, in order to gain access to the circuit breaker mechanism, it is necessary to destroy the seal 64 and to remove the screw 59.
It can be seen that when the covers 56 are in the assembled position on the blocks of the base 27 to constitute a circuit breaker, a free space is provided between the covers 56 of the circuit breakers belonging to the two rows, this space being divided by the separation 31 in two chimneys or ducts 65 and 66 (fig. 2), the duct 65 communicating with all the openings 56a in the cover 56 mounted on the left side of the partition 31 and the duct 66 communicating with the openings 56a of the covers mounted on the right side of separation 31.
The conduits 65 and 66 are closed by a plate 67 which engages on the outer faces of the covers 56 and is fixed thereto by means of screws 68 which are screwed into parts 69 housed in the separation 31.
The gases discharged through the openings 56a of the covers enter the conduits 65 and 66 and are brought vertically to the upper end of the box-jacket, and cooled sufficiently so as not to cause any damage to the parts housed in the box-jacket. The conduits 65 and 66 also serve as ventilation means for the circuit breaker cages, allowing the heated air rising from the circuit breaker contacts during their operation to escape into the ducts from which it is brought to the air. upper end of the envelope box.
As a result of these drafts, cold air is drawn from the bottom of the casing and is caused to circulate through and around the circuit breaker mechanisms, whereby these are maintained at a temperature. proper operation.
In fig. 1 and 2, it will be noted that the frame 9 of the box-envelope is provided with metal edges projecting inwardly 71 which terminate in grooves 72 provided in the upper faces of the covers 56 and it will also be noted that the seals 64 for fixing the cover 56 to the base 27 are located behind and below these re edges 71, which makes said seals inaccessible as long as the frame 9 is in the assembly position.
It can be seen that access to the operating handles of the circuit breakers 44 is made through the opening 11 in the frame 9 and that the frame 9 is not removed under any circumstances except by authorized agents for this purpose. As the seals 6-1 are made inaccessible to unauthorized persons, the covers 56 for the various circuit breakers cannot be removed without tampering and because the circuit breaker housings are permanently sealed, manufacturers can maintain the warranty for the construction of the circuit breakers as long as the seals of the covers 56 have not been broken.
It will be understood that main circuit breakers are similar in construction to branch circuit breakers except that their capacity will be greater and will therefore be larger and heavier in construction.
