Manufacturing process of artificial leather. This invention relates to a process for the manufacture of an artificial leather, starting from waste or parings @ the leather as well as waste, scraps or residues resulting from the cutting -of the skins or croupons, allowing to obtain an artificial leather capable of compare favorably with natural leather as to its softness, strength and appearance.
In the process of manufacturing artificial leather starting from waste, parings and cuts of leather, hides and butt according to the invention, these materials are mechanically broken up, so as to form extremely small bundles of fibers in a large quantity of The water in which these beams remain suspended, rubber latex, gutta-percha, balata, etc. are added.
and substances capable of facilitating the coagulation of the latex and of retaining the coagulated latex, the suspension is deposited on a finely perforated support and the liquid is rapidly separated from the fibers no later than one hour after the addition of the latex, so as to obtain a felted sheet which is then laminated.
The disintegration is preferably carried out so as to give rise to extremely small bundles or bundles of fibers, having a very rough surface and a dimension considerably larger than the other two. The plots into which the raw material has been subdivided are held in suspension in the liquid under the conditions most suitable for subsequent treatments, while the roughness of their surface considerably improves the solidity of the finished product.
The disintegration of the raw material to form the bundles -de fibers measuring the particular dimensions and in the special form indicated above can be carried out in a beater or grinder apparatus provided with doctor blades carried by a drum.
It is advantageous when using clippings or scraps of untanned hide. to add, before the latex, vegetable tanning substances to the fibers in the aqueous suspension for the purpose of carrying out a preliminary tanning of the fibers, these vegetable tanning substances being added in excess in order to facilitate coagulation and preserve vation of latex.
When leather trimmings or waste tanned by vegetable substances are used; in particular - sumac, the introduction of the tanning plant substances, before the addition of the latex, is super fluid, because - these tanning plant substances are already present in the suspension in sufficient quantity to facilitate coagulation and : conservation of latex. In this case, substances capable of facilitating coagulation may be added substances which produce additional chromium tanning.
Such tanning carried out on the fibers ensures the artificial leather maximum softness and resistance. Thanks to the very pronounced subdivision of the fibers, the tanning material penetrates and oozes completely and evenly. to through the treated mass, which is not the case in the tanning of skins and rumps in sight. of -making of natural leather. The presence of substances for the vegetable tanning carried out before the addition of the latex improves the coagulation of the latter and preserves it indefinitely in the artificial leather.
This vegetable tanning is particularly useful because it makes it possible to prevent vulcanization of the coagulated latex. This would be extremely difficult and detrimental to the fibers of the leather because of the high temperature which it requires and which adversely affects the softness of the product and alters it. Furthermore, the latex binding the fibers would oxidize or deteriorate other material after a short time due to lack of vulcanization, which would cause the artificial leather to lose its consistency.
Tanning has the advantage of preserving, in other words, of maintaining the action of the latex in the artificial leather indefinitely and of obviating the drawbacks inherent in vulcanization. It is the vegetable tannins which are the most suitable for the intended purpose: those of the pyrogallic series and among them sumac in particular, are liable to give excellent results.
Before the addition of the latex it is convenient to carry out a lubrication of the fibers in suspension; for this purpose, we can add to. the aqueous suspension of fatty substances capable of emulsifying in water. This wise greasing is preferably carried out after adding tanning vegetable substances.
When starting from debris or chippings of chrome leather from which the acid has not yet been removed, they are advantageously subjected to a preliminary neutralization using sodium borate, sodium hyposulphite, bicarbonate of soda or other alkaline salts of weak acids, singly or in combination. The best neutralization temperature is between 30 and 60 C. After this neutralization, it is advantageous to wash the raw material in water.
The artificial leather obtained from chrome leather by the treatment which has just been described is satisfactory in all respects and is capable of finding the most extensive and successful applications as a leather substitute. However. in some cases it may be desirable to give it additional tensile and breaking strength.
This is achieved by treating the clippings or: chromed leather cuts with sodium and potassium tar- trate (Seifinette's salt), preferably after the mentioned neutralization, when this is necessary, and during disaggregation.
This salt possesses the property of partially detaning chrome leather, and, since lightly tanned leather fibers are more resistant than fibers which are saturated with chromium oxide, the resistance of artificial leather to traction and to, the rupture is thereby increased.
In addition, the fibers in suspension in the water swell considerably when they are partially untinned and enter a semi-colloidal state. Under these conditions, the latex added to them has the effect of not only surrounding these fibers, but of penetrating or oozing completely through them, so that the sheet of artificial leather acquires one. new strength due to the fact -that the entangled fibers are more closely secured to each other by the rubber latex with which they are impregnated.
To make this type of extra strong artificial leather, it is advantageous to use only an amount of vegetable tannins, which is strictly necessary to coagulate the latex, since the addition of larger amounts of tannins would considerably decrease the strength. solidity, of the product by completely or partially destroying the effect of sodium and potassium tartrate.
Instead of Seignette salt, we can also use for the same purpose - cream of tartar (acid potassium tartrate) or others: organic salts with detanning action which, however, are less effective than the salt of S -comb.
In order to allow a uniform absorption of this reduced quantity of vegetable tannins by all the particles of the fibers while they are in suspension in the liquid, the lubrication is carried out beforehand. In order that the previously tanned fibers do not twitch during lubrication, particularly if gromine (a sulphurous oil) is used, a certain quantity of soap can also be introduced into the mass during the lubrication.
In order to facilitate the separation of the filtration liquid during the felting of the product in sheet form, which is of importance when making sheets of a notable thickness, -chloride can be added to the additional fibers. sodium or ammonium chloride. After the addition of the sodium or ammonium chloride, mineral tanning of the suspended fibers, preferably chromium tanning, can be followed. A greater or lesser amount of chromium oxide will be used depending on whether the waste or clippings have been tanned more or less lightly.
The amount of sodium chloride will also vary depending on whether in felting the sheet product a higher or lower liquid separation capacity is desired. If the auxiliary chromium treatment is carried out, the material is preferably neutralized. It has also been found that sodium or ammonium chloride, added immediately after the latex and before felting. improves the process and the product.
If it is desired to obtain an excessively soft, flexible artificial leather, one can add to the aqueous suspension of fibers (obtained by starting from untanned hides or leather tanned by vegetable substances or leather tanned by mineral substances and neutralized ) before latex treatment and preferably before tanning with vegetable substances, chromium liquor, potassium alum solution or aluminum sulphate and then neutralize the product.
The suitable proportions of the ingredients to be employed in applying the present process to chippings or scrap of chrome leather are, by way of example, the following: 1. Manufacture of artificial leather for sweat banding for hats, ladies' bags, bookbinding, works of art or fantasy.
