Description
Process for converting ethylene cyanohydrin into methyl acrylate. The saponification of nitriles in the presence of full acid is known. Nitriles can also be esterified directly by known processes. Finally, it is also known that suitable hydroxyl-containing bodies can be converted into unsaturated compounds using agents that split off serums.
It has been found that ethylene cyanohydrin can be converted into methyl acrylate in the presence of water-splitting agents and methanol in acidic medium by heating, for example to about 120-170 C.
Furthermore, it has been shown that small amounts of water in the reaction mixture can favor the reaction. These amounts of water can be introduced into the process, for example, by using pre) concentrated acids with a low water content.
It can be carried out at atmospheric pressure or at a different pressure. Example: 43 kg of ethylene cyanohydrin are carefully mixed with 35 kg of methanol and 85 kg of cor) - centered sulfuric acid, the specific weight of which is 1.80, and heated to around 160 0 over the course of several hours while stirring . Initially, a little methanol is distilled off, with small amounts of methyl acrylate and water mixed in with it. Then a fairly high percentage of methyl acrylate is mixed with water and methanol.
Because the water also distills off, the process is practically complete and it is possible to obtain yields of around 90% of all methyl acrylate; especially if the amounts of acid still present in the residue are also converted into esters by repeated treatment with methanol.
