Press mix of phenolic resins. The present invention relates to a phenolic resin molding compound. Such mixtures are known to consist of a reactive phenolic resin and mostly fibrous fillers, such as wood flour.
These mixtures are usually processed using the hot-pressing process, with the reactive resin being converted into an infusible resin during the pressing process, which forms the binding agent in the finished article.
The compression molding can also be processed according to the so-called cold compression molding process, whereby the molding takes place under high pressure, but at normal temperature or at temperatures below the transition point of the resin, with the molded articles being heated in suitable ovens. in order to bring about or complete the tTmwan.dlun (r.
Experience has shown that all press mixes have a certain flowability or plasticity at the molding temperature. There. This flowability depends on the resin, it was previously necessary for the mixtures to contain a certain and fairly high proportion of resin in order to ensure the necessary flowability. The ratio between resin and filler can be varied somewhat, but in pulp and resin press mixtures it has to approximate almost exactly the ratio of 1: 1 or 50: 50.
As a result of the relatively high price of the resin compared to the price of the wood flour, mixtures containing a high percentage of resin are necessarily relatively expensive.
We have now found that certain plasticizers, which are also solvents fair the resin, namely the higher molecular weight aldehydes; which boil over <B> 100 '</B> and in particular the furfural in Misehunc with reactive resins of the known phenolic resin type and the usual fillers, even with the addition of relatively small amounts, an extraordinary and unexpected influence on the flowability exercise the mixes. For example, we found
that a press mix that is about. - ') 5% of the reactive resin, 20% furfural and about .55% wood flour, shows essentially the same flowability as a mixture containing 50% wood flour and <B> 50% </B> Harr .
With a resin content of about 30% and a fiber content of about 5075 and 20% furfural one can achieve an excellent flowability of the mixture. It is expedient to use press ingots that contain <B> 50% </B> or more of the fibrous filler, usually wood flour.
About 2'5-40% phenolic resin and sufficient amounts of the furfural or an equivalent, consisting of an aldehyde boiling above <B> 100 </B> plasticizing agent, usually about. l5-25% to achieve the required fluidity ..
By the expression "reactive resin" we all mean: those products of the phenolic resin type that are initially meltable and soluble, but immediately pass into the insoluble state through sufficient exposure to heat.
These reactive resins can easily be prepared, for example by adding sufficient amounts of hexamethylene tetramine or equivalent formaldehyde-containing bodies to a phenolic resin of the permanently fusible and soluble type in order to convert it into a resin of the infusible type to effect under the action of heat.
Is 1-lexamethy.len- tetramin used as the hardening agent, or is the condensation of phenols and formaldehyde or its equivalents with. With the help of ammonia as a catalyst, some ammonia is set free in the last stage of the conversion.
It's a particular benefit. of furfurol, that in this case it is able to bind the ammonia with the formation of furfuramide, which, with sufficient exposure to heat, passes into the nitrogenous body furfurin, which forms part of the final binding agent. Senzaldehyde acts in essentially the same way.
Furfurol is best suited for carrying out the invention, but the invention is not restricted to this, since fur- furol can be replaced in whole or in part by other organic bodies that have a boiling point above 1.00 and have a good solvent capacity for the have resins used as starting material and, in order to achieve the best results, are of aldehyde character, such as benza aldehyde,
Hexanol (Alclehydbexosen, such as Cxlucose), Iso-IHexy 1-Aldehyde (Iso-Henax-A1, dehyd), Manno-Heptose, Methyl-Furfurol and other bodies per analogous composition.
The furfural (boiling point approx. 160 C) can be used particularly advantageously because its boiling point is higher than the temperature in: the cold-pressed article in the brick are hardened.
