Materials erheblich stei gert.
Process for the preparation of an aqueous solution of a phenol-formaldehyde condensation product. The present invention relates to a method. for the production of a condensation product through the reaction of carbolic acid and formaldehyde in the presence of an alkaline condensation agent. Such a product is suitable as a lacquer or as a protective coating or as a component of a plastic mass za. serve.
According to the present process, a mixture of carbonic acid and formaldehyde is boiled with the addition of a small amount of an alkaline condensing agent, and the resulting condensation product is mixed with that much water. that a thin solution is created, and. then adds an aqueous solution of a chromium compound.
Alkali hydroxide is expediently used as the condensing agent. Cooking can be continued for a longer or shorter time and thus a more or less condensed product can be obtained. So it is up to you to give the product the viscosity grade that is best suited for the respective purpose of use. If necessary, the condensation can go so far that the nature of the product approaches the state of resinification.
The level of condensation and viscosity depend only on the length of the cooking time; they are not influenced by the subsequent dilution with water and the addition of the mentioned solution to a chromium compound. After evaporation. of the water, the residue, i.e. the solid condensation product, can be softened by the application of heat and converted further into the hard, insoluble state.
The following example shows how the procedure can be carried out.
Example: A mixture consisting of phenol (carbolic acid) 50.8 kg, farmaldehyde approx. 40% 50.8 kg, caustic potash 1.135 kg, is placed in a distillation vessel and for a period of time which depends on the intended use of the Mixture sets up, cooked. From the time the mixture comes to a boil, boiling for 30 to 40 minutes is sufficient to produce a product suitable for most purposes.
The viscosity of the solution initially increases slowly while the ice is being cooked, but then increases so rapidly that, in order to achieve the desired degree of viscosity, it is necessary to adhere to the cooking time relatively precisely. Shortly after the boiling point has been reached, a few minutes of cooking time do not cause any noticeable change, in the later stages a single minute can visibly affect the viscosity of the product.
After the mixture has been boiled for the time necessary to achieve the intended purpose and the desired degree of viscosity has been achieved, about 32 liters of water are poured into the container and the resulting solution is then run through a cooling coil into a suitable container .
By carefully observing the cooking time corresponding to the required viscosity grade and then adding water, as described above, a soluble product of any viscosity grade can be obtained up to one which approaches resinification.
The degree of dilution of the solution is irrelevant; After evaporation of the solvent and appropriate treatment of the alkaline condensation agent, the product remaining shows the same viscosity curve or the same approximation to the resinification state, respectively. which it had before the addition of the solvent, and remains in this state until it is further condensed by heat treatment.
Instead of eliminating or simply neutralizing the alkaline condensing agent, which, in the absence of appropriate treatment, would continue to work in the cold, it is used as a base to build up a chromium compound, whereby the activity of the condensing agent is more a temporary than a total Neutralization he drives. If desired, it can be made effective in the last and most important stage of resin formation. The chromium and oxygen in the chromium compound produced in the product enhance its effectiveness.
As a result, the product can be manufactured with remarkable ease and exhibits significant strength. If it is used as an impregnating agent, it can be converted into its final hardened form by applying pressure to it in a heated press for a few minutes.
Since it simultaneously gains the property of not sticking to the same material, the shaped and hardened product can be used as a stamp or matrix to produce any number of reproductions of an original, namely reproductions made of the same material like the die itself. All you have to do is take the die out of the press and cool it, and it is immediately ready for use.
When light, or heat, or both, act on the product after the moisture has been expelled, the chromium compound appears to enhance the revitalized effectiveness of the condensing alkali with which it is combined while it is. at the same time, and apart from the effect it has on the impregnating agent, the strength of the impregnated. Material increases considerably.
As far as the use of a chromium compound is concerned, for example, a solution of 1.1'35 kg to 1.36 kg of ammonium bichromate in 16, can be added to the cooled solution of the phenol-formaldehyde condensation product obtained on the air described above. Put 34 kg of cold or warm water after adding enough aqueous ammonia to this latter solution that precipitation is avoided.
If the mixture has a very high viscosity, the solubility can be maintained by adding alcohol either alone or together with ammonium hydroxide.
Instead of ammonium dichromate, ammonium chromate, calcium, copper, zinc, aluminum, strontium chromate and many other chromates can be used, if necessary dissolved in a suitable amount of chromic acid (chromium trioxide).
The ammonium, - bichroma.t, however, deserves preference because it is cheaper and easier to obtain than all the substances mentioned. - The chromium can also be used in the form of chromium acetate or some other salt, in which the chromium occurs as a base instead of as an acid.
The cooled condensation product to which the chromium compound has been added can be used, among other things, to impregnate absorbent material such as filter paper. The excess moisture is removed from the impregnated material preferably at air temperature, whereupon it is ready for use and can be used as a plastic material. The impregnated filter paper forms plastic leaves, which can be shaped using heat and pressure.
The remaining moisture is just enough to keep the leaves soft and pliable. The presence of moisture also inhibits the effect of the chromium compound. When the condensation product has become dry, be it through the action of heat, as when using an impregnating agent, or through the action of the open air, such as when used as a paint, the chromium begins to exert its effect.
The impregnated, still visibly moist leaves can be stretched to produce a wide variety of articles by subjecting them to the action of heat and pressure for a few minutes with an original or a die of a suitable type in a press.
When shaping or pressing sheets or other impregnated bodies in the prescribed manner. it is the correct setting of the viscosity. , the product or the addition of the correct amount, the chromium compound, according to the nature of the object to be formed, plays an extremely important role in practice. For this reason, one should carefully adjust the cooking time of the original mixture to the intended purpose.
In certain types of use, the light liquid, which the dry condensation product initially acquires when heated, proves to be a hindrance. This applies, for example, to the use of filter paper impregnated with the condensation product for abnormal printing, in which case excessive fluidity results in the condensation product flowing out.
In such cases, the solution of the condensation product is used before it is used to impregnate filter paper and similar material. To regulate the fluidity, a colloid such as glue, gelatine or casein is expediently incorporated. It is advisable to use the colloid in the form of an aqueous solution to which ammonia has been added to prevent it from separating.
The presence of an excess of ammonia or ammonium salts in the solution used for the impregnation has the consequence that the condensation continues even after the impregnation of the leaves or other material, so that after the subsequent drying and thereby effected , Standstill of further changes the impregnating agent is closer to the resinification state than at the time of its incorporation.
But by the time the impregnation actually takes place, the condensation product will not have exceeded the water-solubility stage and easily penetrate the cells of the paper or other base material.
The condensation product made in any of the prescribed ways can be used as a varnish or protective coating for the surface of a variety of objects. By adding suitable pigments or dyes or finely divided solid material, a product is obtained which can be used as a water-soluble paint, which becomes insoluble on drying under the application of heat.
