Joint universel.
Dans le dessin. annexé représentant, à titre .d'exemple, une forme d'exécution -de l'objet de l'invention: Fig. 1 est une coupe longitudinale d'un joint universel muni du dispositif de retenue de lubrifiant; Fig. 2 est une coupe analogue prise à angle droit par rapport à la fig. 1; Fig..3 est une vue en bout avec coupe transversale suivant 3-3 (fig. 1), -en regar dant dans le sens des flèches;
Universal joint. This invention relates to universal joints for use in transmitting driving force from a drive shaft to a driven shaft and particularly relates to those in which the driven shaft carries at its end a ball or globular head and a transverse pin carrying rollers or balls which are engaged in diametrically opposed slots of a part fixed to the adjacent end. of the drive shaft, which ensures simultaneous rotational movements. of the shafts, while at the same time their making it possible to move angularly with respect to one another and also to perform a slight longitudinal displacement with respect to one another,
seals of this type being able in particular to be advantageously employed in transmission mechanisms for automobiles.
The object of the present invention is such a universal joint, in which the ball joint is disposed inside a box which contains a tu bular retainer freely connected to the ball joint and protruding from it. 'outside the box, means cooperating with said member being provided to prevent lubricant from escaping from the box.
In the drawing. appended showing, by way of example, an embodiment of the object of the invention: FIG. 1 is a longitudinal section of a universal joint provided with the lubricant retainer; Fig. 2 is a similar section taken at right angles to FIG. 1; Fig..3 is an end view with transverse section taken along 3-3 (fig. 1), looking in the direction of the arrows;
Fig. 4, 5 and 6 are respectively two sections at <B> 90 '</B> with respect to each other and an end view of the retaining member shown separately; Fig. 7 and 8 are respectively a quick side and a section of the severed ring. The type of seal shown comprises a shaft 1: provided with a head in the form of a ball joint the -which is crossed by a pin lb on which are mounted .des rollers or balls located on either side of the ball joint.
The ball joint 1a and the balls 1c are arranged inside a box preferably made up of two separable parts 2, 2a, as shown. The element 2 of the box has an axial hole the diameter of which is a little larger than that of the ball joint 1a and of the slots 2c situated on two diametrically opposed sides of said hole and in which the rollers 1e move. The element 2 of the box has at its internal end an opening through which the shaft 1 passes,
and its other end is provided with a flange which is fastened by bolts to a flange provided at the end of the box member 2a, which may be integral with the shaft section 10 or be secured thereto.
A spring 3 is placed in the box between the internal end of the shaft 10 and the ball joint 1a. To prevent the spring from scratching the rotule 1a, to guide this ball joint and protect it against wear and at the same time to prevent the loss of lubricant, a combined device has been provided which serves to protect the ball joint, at the same time. guide and retain the lubricant.
This device 'comprises an elongated tubular member preferably constituted by a stamped metal part having a partially spherical internal end 4 intended to exactly match the external end of the ball joint 1a, and a tubular cylindrical part 4a which extends. towards the interior beyond the ball joint and through the opening of the internal end of the box element 2. This member 4 has near its external end two slits - diametrically opposed 4c - intended to leave pass the pin lb, these slots being elongated to allow the necessary oscillating movements of the pin.
The length of the cylindrical part 4a is such that the internal end of the retaining member 4 can never fully penetrate the interior of the box, even when the ball is in its final limit position (i.e. - say when placed near part 2a of the box). The cylindrical part 4a prevents the protective organ from oscillating longitudinally inside the box. This member can move longitudinally in the box with the ball joint, but cannot oscillate or rotate with this ball joint relative to the axis of the pin lb, any more than relative to the longitudinal axis of the box.
The kneecap. the can move freely in all directions inside the end 4 of the retaining member, and the latter can slide longitudinally -in the box and, under the action of the spring 3, will take part to all longitudinal movements of the patella inside the box.
The retaining device has at its end 4 an axial opening adjacent to the shaft 10, which opening is surrounded by a re edge 4b 'embraced by the end of the spring 3 (FIG. 1). The pressure of the spring 3 is transmitted by the end 4 of the retaining member to the ball joint 1a; and although the ball can oscillate inside said member, its oscillating movements will not be transmitted to the spring 3. The end 4 of the retaining member protects the ball against the wear which would result from its contact with it. the spring 3, constantly keeps the spring exactly aligned with the axis -of the box and prevents vibrations of the spring, which increases the life, efficiency and wear resistance of the seal.
The box should be filled with lubricant to lubricate the ball joint and the rollers; -preferably, the cylindrical part 4a of the retaining member slides gently in the opening provided at the end of the box 2, and to prevent the lubricant from escaping from the box by passing around and through it 'Outside of the -retaining member, there is placed around part 4a, at the end of the box, an annular gasket W -which is fixed by an annular piece 5 of stamped metal provided with radial ears 5b fixed at the end of the box element 2 by screws 5c.
The piece 5 is provided with a flange 5d which widens at its internal end to give the device a more elegant appearance and also to constitute, if desired, a device for securing to this piece a device. cover. or flexible sheath (not shown) as is usually used to prevent the penetration of dust inside the box.
To prevent the lubricant from escaping from the box through the retaining organ passing through the openings through which the pin 1b protrudes, suitable means may be provided to ensure a tight seal between said or gane and the patella 1a.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a ring 6 (preferably composed of two semi-annular sections assembled as shown at 6a in fig. 7 and 8) is placed on the shaft 1 and against the ball joint 1a, one face of this ring being recessed. spherically to fit against the patella as shown. The ring 6 is elastically pressed against the ball joint by means of a corrugated annular spring 7 which is hand held in position inside the retaining member 4 by a metal segment 8 elastically inserted in an annular recess. provided on the internal surface of the element 4a of the retaining member, as shown in FIGS. 1 and 2.
When the parts have been assembled as shown in fig.l, the space -de the box between the retaining member and the shaft is filled with lubricant. 10 so that all moving parts are properly lubricated during operation.
When the seal is in use, the ball joint and the rollers move in relative motion inside the box, and the centri fuge force tends to retain the lubricant in the box, but the passage of lubricant from the box inside of the retaining member by the openings 40 of said member is prevented by the ring 6, while the escape of the lubricant; outside .de la. socket is fished by the washer W.
