Hierdurch erzielt man ständig hohe Ausbeuten an Aceton.
Process for the preparation of acetone .. The subject of the invention is. a process for the production of acetone, characterized in that esters of acetic acid and water vapor are brought into reaction at higher temperatures in the presence of catalysts.
Suitable reaction temperatures here are preferably those above −50 ° C., for example temperatures from '00 to <B> 600 '</B>. The water vapor is expediently used in large excess.
If, for example, ethyl acetate is subjected to the above-mentioned reactions at higher temperatures, for example those of 500 and above, using catalysts such as oxygen compounds of heavy metals such as iron oxide or heavy metals such as iron or mixed contacts such as oxidized iron more, it is not only the acetic acid present in the esters but also the ethyl alcohol that takes part in the formation of acetone. The reaction then proceeds according to the equation CH3.
CO. 0C2H5 -f- H20 = (CIL) 2C0 -f- C02 - + - '2H2.
In particular, mixed catalysts have been used to carry out this process, for example those which contain oxygen compounds of heavy metals for themselves or in combination with metals themselves, for example oxidized iron, and also auxiliary catalysts. The latter are substances which do not act catalytically or not sufficiently, but improve and lengthen the effect of the catalysts, such as calcium carbonate, calcium oxide, magnesium carbonate, magnesium oxide and the like.
Example: through a reaction tube; which is filled with rusted iron filings on which calcium carbonate has precipitated and heated to 510, a mixture of equal parts by weight of ethyl acetate and water is passed in vapor form. The emerging vapors are condensed.
The yield of acetone is 85% of theory, calculated on the a.ngewendetei, ethyl acetate.
When processing dilute starting solutions, such as raw wood vinegar, it is advantageous to proceed, for example, by first separating the methyl alcohol present in this starting material, then esterifying it with ethyl alcohol, and processing the appropriately purified ethyl acetate obtained on acetone.
Further investigations have shown that it is also possible to mix esters with small amounts of other substances that can be converted into acetone through ketoneization, such as ethyl alcohol, acetaldehyde, acetic acid, etc.
to ketonize in the sense of the invention and that the ketonization of esters respectively. mixtures of substances of the type mentioned above containing esters as the main constituent can also be carried out successfully if foreign substances, such as methyl alcohol, which do not participate in the ketonization are present.
This knowledge enables the processing of mixtures, such as those in technology, without: it being necessary to break down these mixtures into their constituent parts beforehand, or: or otherwise process them.
When producing acetone from ethyl acetate, for example, one can work in such a way that a reaction product is obtained, which mainly consists of acetone and also small amounts of ester and acetaldehyde, as well as small amounts of ethyl alcohol and contains acetic acid. All that is required is to remove the acetone that has formed from this mixture, while the remaining components can be fed back into the process unseparated and subjected to ketoning with fresh ethyl acetate.
With regard to the knowledge of the reusability of the by-products, the ketonization process can optionally be carried out with advantage in such a way that less emphasis is placed on achieving a high yield of theory, and instead larger quantities are passed through, where a greater production can be achieved.
Finally, it was also found that the catalysts by treatment with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas mixtures, for example air, optionally with the addition of water vapor at higher temperatures, for example those of about. 500 C, can be activated. One can, for example, proceed in such a way that one resp. when the effectiveness of the catalysts declines, the ketonization process is interrupted and, for example, air or a mixture of air and water vapor passes over the catalyst while maintaining the reaction temperatures, for example at <B> 500 '.
If oxygen is no longer absorbed, or no longer absorbed in substantial amounts, ketonization can be continued, where the original yields are then obtained again.
Ice has proven to be advantageous to activate the catalyst in shorter intervals, that is to say at times at which a significant decrease in the catalysts has not yet occurred. This results in consistently high yields of acetone.
The life of the catalysts can also be extended by introducing small amounts of air into the contact space together with the reaction components (ester and: water vapor) without interrupting the ketonization process.
The performance can also be increased again with steam alone, for example in such a way that the ester feed is interrupted from time to time and steam is passed through the contact space for a short time while maintaining the reaction temperature. According to one embodiment of the invention, the hydrogen formed as a by-product can be used to carry out the ketonization process and, if necessary, to regenerate the catalysts.
For example, if some air is introduced into the process together with the reaction mixture, part of the hydrogen formed is burned in the reaction space and made usable for internal heating. The hydrogen leaving the reaction space can be used together with the carbonic acid which is also formed or also alone for the external heating of the reaction space during the ketoning or regeneration of the catalysts.
You can also combine external and internal heating for use.
