Cathode funnel for mercury vapor rectifiers. The invention relates to cathode funnels for guiding and cooling the mercury vapor rising from the cathode in queek silver vapor alignment devices. It is well known that ignitions on the cathode funnel occur when the funnel is hot and condensed drops of mercury fall on it. If the funnel is cooled down, the queek silver drops it catches stick to the cooled funnel and are harmless.
Sufficient cooling of the cathode tray can also reduce the pressure of the mercury vapor flowing into the discharge space. can be adjusted to a certain value. Furthermore, the steam supply can be regulated in such a way that only as much mercury steam flows into the unloading space as is necessary, while the rest is condensed in the cooled funnel.
In order to achieve complete cooling of the mercury vapor, the cathode funnel is connected to the base plate of the evenly-aligned housing in a high vacuum-tight, thermally and electrically conductive manner. According to the invention, it protrudes into the discharge space and is designed in its foot part as a dirt trap with a siphon overflow for the condensed mercury. The funnel is expediently double-walled in the upper part protruding into the discharge area.
The funnel designed in this way can either be connected to the existing circulation cooling system of the rectifier or to a special cooling line. Air, water, etc. can serve as coolant in a known manner. The surface of the inner wall of the funnel can be enlarged by grooves or ribs.
The foot part of the cathode funnel is expediently provided with a collecting channel which is connected to the deepest point of the base plate by inflow holes. In the drawing, an embodiment example of a KathodentricUters according to the invention is shown.
a is the base plate, b the cathode tri-liter and c the cathode with the cathode insulator and the cathode end plate e. The cathode funnel b is combined with the bottom plate a in a high vacuum-tight manner, for example by welding. The KathodentHeliter is double-walled and provided with space f for the coolant, which flows in at g and flows out at h.
The inner wall of the cathode funnel is provided with grooves i to enlarge the cooling surface. In the foot part of the cathode funnel is the collecting channel k with overflow edge 1 of the siplion-like acting Selimutzfänger for the mercury condensed on the container walls, which flows off over the base plate. Inflow bores m lead from the lowest point of the bottom plate to the channel k.
The special arrangement of the dirt trap offers the. The advantage that the condensed mercury flowing on the base plate no longer collects on the base itself, and that it is therefore not possible to attach a Lielit arch at this point. The mercury contained in the collecting channel k is also prevented from evaporating by the cooling on all sides, and it also serves to close off the cathode space.
