Des formes d'exécution de l'objet de l'in vention sont représentées, à titre d'exemple, au dessin annexé, dans lequel: La fig. 1 est une vue de côté, partie en coupe transversale, d'une première forme d'exécution; La fig. 2, en est une vue de dessus cor respondante; La fig. 3 est une coupe à plus grande échelle; suivant la ligne III-III de la fig. 1. montrant des détails du mécanisme de commande. ; La fig. 4 montre, à plus grande échelle, une vue de côté du mécanisme de commande représenté à la fig. 1;
Signaling device. luminous for aviation ports. The invention relates to a light signaling device for aviation ports, for indicating the conditions of wise landing, and more particularly for indicating the general location of the aviation port, the direction of the wind and the speed of the aircraft. wind.
It is common practice in aviation port lighting to employ a rotating lantern to designate the location of the landing field. The lantern is essentially a powerful exploration light or rotating projector mounted so that the light beam is projected a few degrees above the horizontal. The projector can be rotated, by mechanical means, in a horizontal plane at a uniform low speed so that the light beam crosses the horizon and its light strikes the eye of an approaching aviator. By this means the aviator is able to ensure himself on the location of the landing field.
It is also desirable that the aviator know the wind direction in the immediate vicinity of the landing field so that he can land in the upwind direction.
Wind direction is usually indicated by a canvas bag arranged to fly freely with the wind and usually illuminated by lamps. Such a wind indicator is rather indistinct and unsatisfactory because it can only be seen a very short distance from the landing field.
The main object of the invention is to provide means for indicating to an aviator, when he is still at a certain distance, the position of the wise landing field, the direction of the wind at the surface thereof and also , if desired, its speed.
The light signaling device which is the subject thereof comprises a light projector or lantern, a wind indicator device and light control means, and it is characterized in that the light projector. and wind indicator apparatus are rotatable independently of each other and the wind indicator apparatus is arranged to control the light beam emanating from the independently rotating light projector when said light beam and a control member of light, movable with said wind indicator apparatus, come into alignment with each other.
The invention thus provides means by which the light beam of a rotating light projector is used not only to transmit information to the airman from the point of view of the location of the landing field, but also at the point of landing. view of the wind direction and, if desired, also of the wind speed near the landing field.
Embodiments of the object of the invention are shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which: FIG. 1 is a side view, partly in cross section, of a first embodiment; Fig. 2, is a corresponding top view; Fig. 3 is a section on a larger scale; along line III-III of FIG. 1. Showing details of the operating mechanism. ; Fig. 4 shows, on a larger scale, a side view of the control mechanism shown in FIG. 1;
Fig. 5 is a front view of a second embodiment of the object of the invention; Fig. 6 is a corresponding side elevation; Fig. 7 is a front view of a third embodiment and FIG. 8 is a corresponding side elevation thereof. The light signaling device shown in FIGS. 1 and 2 has a base plate 1 anchored to a foundation 2. The base plate is provided with suitable threaded openings for securing a box 3 to it using screws or bolts 4.
On the base plate 1 is fixed a stationary vertical post 5. A hollow shaft or sleeve 6 is freely fitted on the post 5 to rotate freely thereon and rests on a suitable bearing 10 on the base plate. A helical wheel 7, slip rings 8 and 9, and a projector holder 11 are rigidly mounted on the sleeve 6 near the base thereof. The box 3 contains the control and switching members and its upper wall is provided with a orifice 12 with a rim which is arranged to be closed by means of a cap 13 integral with the sleeve 6.
The light projector 14 is mounted on a post 15 which is carried by the support 11. A bracket 16 is attached to the projector and is arranged to freely receive the mount 15. Bolts 17 and 18 tighten the bracket 16 on the post 15. The opening for the bolt 18 is slotted to allow a small vertical adjustment of the light projector 14.
A suitable counterweight 21 is provided to the projector support 11 to balance the weight of the projector 14. An electrical connection is made with an electric light source in the projector by means of a cable 22, a conductor of which is connected to the ring. 8 (fig. 4) and the other to the slip ring 9 through an opening 20 of the slip ring 8.
A weather vane 23 is carried by an elongated cha 23e engaged on the post 5 rotatably supported by a ball 30 placed on the upper end of the post 5. A collar 53, provided with a flange extending downwards , acts as a water protector for the seal between the sleeve 6 and the cap 23a, these two parts being rotatable independently of one another. The ends of the wings 25 and 26 of the weather vane are secured to the elongated cap 231 by means of rivets or bolts 24, and the opposite ends of the wings are held apart to form a V-shaped weather vane, giving titi practical support for a screen 27 which is fixed to the vane by means of bolts 19.
The weight of the weather vane is balanced by a counterweight 28 on a side arm of the skin 23a.
The screen 27 is arranged on the vane so that it extends opposite the light opening of the projector 14 to intercept the light beam from the projector each time the projector, during its rotation around the axis. of pole 5, points in the direction of the wind.
The screen 27 thus forming a temporary shut-off member for the projector can be made of transparent or translucent material such as red glass or of another color, or it can be made of an opaque sheet or shutters. 'an opaque or transparent material.
The projector 14 is actuated to rotate around the axis of the post i, by an electric motor 29 mounted in the box 3 on the base plate 1 and actuating the helical wheel 7.
According to fig. 3 and 4, the control mechanism of the projector 14 comprises, in combination with the electric motor 29, titi pinion 31, a toothed wheel 32, a worm 36 and the helical wheel 7, the latter being rigidly fixed on the sleeve chon 6. The shaft 33 carrying the toothed wheel 32 and the worm 36 is supported on the base plate 1 by means of bearings 34 and 35. Brushes 37 and 38 resting on the slip rings 8 and 9 are fixed. on an insulating block 39 and are connected to current supply conductors 41 and 42.
It will be understood that a blast of wind will cause the vane 23 to turn to a position like that shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. The light beam from the projector 14 will cross the horizon in the usual way, but when it reaches the position shown in FIGS. 1 and 2, the light beam is intercepted by the screen 27 and its effect is changed. This change in the effect of the light beam allows the aviator to determine the direction of the wind near the lantern.
It is not necessary for the aviator to approach the lantern against the wind and thus be directly in the path of the intercepted beam in order to determine the direction of the wind; but when he has come close enough he can judge the direction of the wind exactly by watching the beam of light as he crosses the horizon. When a change in the effect of the light beam occurs in a certain direction, he knows that the wind is blowing in that direction.
Another light signaling device is shown in FIGS. 5, 6, 7 and 8. Its construction is similar to that shown in FIGS. 1, 2, 3 and 4 with the exception of the wind vane and of the screen or interception device which is arranged to control the effect of the light beam in order to indicate the wind speed and the direction the wind.
The screen or interception device shown in Figs. 5 and 6 comprises a plurality of flaps 43 made of clear or colored material, translucent or transparent, mounted in a frame 44. The ends of the flaps are provided with pins 45 rotatably mounted in openings provided in the lateral parts of the frame. The flaps 43 are actuated by connecting rods 46 connected to their journals 45.
The free ends of these rods are connected by a drawbar 47. At its upper end, the drawbar 47 is articulated to an arm 48 which, in turn, is fixed to the shaft 51. The flaps are actuated by a wind plate 52 secured to the shaft 51 and biased against the force of the wind by a spring 54, one end of which - eet-li-xde-à @ 1 @ vane 23.
In practice, the weather vane 23 will be rotated on the post 5 and directed by a blast of wind following the direction thereof. The vent plate 52 will then be perpendicular to the direction of the wind indicated by the arrows 53. As a result of the wind pressure, the wind plate 52 will rotate outward against the spring 54. Therefore, it will occupy a position such as that indicated in phantom lines, a position which will vary according to the strength of the wind. As a result of the connection between the wind plate 52 and the flaps 43, the flaps will take a corresponding position, as indicated in dotted lines, and will be closed more or less depending on whether the power of the wind is greater or less.
Consequently, the shutters will be placed so as to intercept part of the light emitted by the projector, the quantity of light intercepted depending on the position of. wind slab 52, as determined by the wind pressure thereon.
By these means, the aviator can determine the direction of the wind and the speed thereof by evaluating the character of the light from the reflector. A colored or less intense ray during part of the light beam path will indicate the wind direction, and the relative depth or vigor of the light beam color or the degree of flap interception will inform the airman of the relative speed of the aircraft. wind. If, for example, red glass is used for the shutters, a bright red light beam will indicate an intense wind, a pink light beam, moderate wind, and a white light beam, the absence of wind. , the degree or shade of red in the light beam thus indicating the pressure and, consequently, the speed of the wind.
Another embodiment of the device is shown in FIGS. 7 and 8 and comp orte @ eïîe @ ,, @@ amt @@ eu p ues parallels 49 and 50 mounted on an elongated hat 4l and arranged to rotate with the wind. Li # s plates 49 and 50 support a horizontal carrier sleeve 64 by means of arms 40 and 60 attached thereto. A counterweight 42 is provided to compensate for the weight of the vane mechanism.
The light interceptor member here is a fan wheel comprising a metal rim 541, and a hub 55 on which vanes 56 are fixed. These are distributed in the fan wheel so as to reserve at least one section of or free opening of sufficient size to let the light beam from the projector pass, when said light beam is parallel to the axis of the fan wheel.
The wind vane and the fan wheel are arranged relative to the projector 14 so that when the projector, while rotating, has taken the position of alignment with the fan wheel as shown in figs. 7 and 8, the fan wheel, by its rotation, will modify the light beam projected by the projector.
The hub of the fan wheel is mounted on a shaft 57 supported in the sleeve 64, and this shaft carries the rotating parts of a centrifugal brake, as described below. The blades 56 of the fan wheel occupy approximately half of the total opening area of the fan wheel and are distributed so as to reserve two free sections, that is to say free of blades. , each about a quarter of said total opening area.
The vanes 56 are inclined like the wings of a windmill so that the current of air can pass between them to rotate the fan wheel, but they overlap each other so that the beam lights from the projector cannot pass between them when they are placed in front of the projector. A small weight 58 is fixed to the rim 541 of the fan wheel within a free section at an equal distance from the two edges of the adjacent vanes.
As long as the wind does not reach a determined speed, the weight 58 on the rim 54R compensates for the force of the wind acting against the vanes 56 and prevents a rotation of the fan wheel, since the pressure on it will not be large enough to lift the weight against gravity. When a determined minimum value of the wind speed is reached, the fan wheel will start to rotate. The vanes and the free sections of the vanes of the fan wheel pass through the beam of light projected in the lantern as the fan wheel rotates, and thus produce alternating periods of brightness and darkness. The periodicity is noted by a flicker of the projected light indicating the relative speed of the air stream.
In extremely high speed air currents, such as in a storm, the fan wheel could spin so quickly that the wobbling could no longer be seen with the naked eye. In order to prevent rotation of the fan wheel beyond this critical speed, a centrifugal brake is mounted at the inner end of the shaft 57. This brake comprises the weights 61 placed by means of a slot on the pegs. 62 projecting radially on the shaft 57. Normally, the weights 61 will be attracted towards the axis of the shaft 57 by springs 63 and will then rest on the shaft sleeve 65.
When the critical speed is reached, the centrifugal force of the weights 61 will overcome the tension of the springs 63 and the weights will move away towards a brake drum 66 which surrounds them to act as brake shoes therein thus preventing the fan wheel. to exceed the critical speed. It goes without saying that any other form of brake could be used instead of that shown.
