PROJECTION APPARATUS.
Application filed March 22, 1923. Serial No. 626,925.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Man A. BLANKENsHIr, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, have invented new and useful Projection Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to light ray projection apparatus.
This invention has utility when incorporated in automatic exhibitors for displaying a series of records, as in advertising operations.
Referring to the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of an installa tion incorporating the invention hereof;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view, on an enlarged scale, of features of the internal mechanism as housed in the installation;
Fig. 3 is a section on the line III-Ill, Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the lions ing base;
Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the flicker device and main projector lens as mounted thereon;
Fig. 6 is a fragmentary view in elevation of the record holder;
Fig. 7 is a detail View in end elevation of one of the record anchoring clips for the record holder; and
Fig. 8 is a partial section on the line VIII-47111, Fig. 3.
A roof or main support 1 is shown as having prop or block 2 for tilting an end of base 3 upward in carrying housing 4. As so.
tilted, this housing 4 has its windows 5, 6, directed to display a record or eye attracting matter upon screen 7.
Power supply comes in by lines 8, 9 (Fig.
4), to the underside of the base 3. Branch 10 from the line 9 extends to switch 11, and thence by line 12, with branch 13 from the line 8 to motor 14 mounted on the upper side of the base 3 adjacent the switch 11.
Branch wires 15, 16, from the lines 8, 9, extend through the base 3 to socket 17 in which is mounted flicker device or border attraction disclosing bulb or light 18. Branch wires 19, 20, from the lines 8, 9, extend through the base 3 to lamp socket 21 (Fig. 2) in which is mounted main record projecting light or bulb 22.
The motor 14 is provided with shaft 23 carrying worm 24 in lubricant containing housing 25, where this worm 24 is in mesh with worm wheel 26 as a speed reduction gearing for driving the shaft 27 protruding from this lubricant housing to carry sprocket wheel 28, about which extends sprocket chain 29.
This sprocket chain 29, in its reaches extends from the sprocket wheel 28 away from the motor 14, to pass about sprocket wheel 30 on shaft 31 mounted in housing 32. The sprocket chain 29 has U-shaped block or flight 33. Mounted adjacent the wheel 28 is bracket 34 carried by the base 3. r This bracket 34 as upwardly extending adjacent the chain 29, has pin 35 pivotally mounting shoe 36 under the upper reach of the chain 29. The free end of this shoe 36 extends toward the wheel 30. and its upward projection is adjusted by stem 37, and nut 38 as coacting with bracket 39 carried by the base 3.
The adjustment of this shoe 36 determines the driving engaging distance of the flight 33 with a pin or lug 40. These pins or lugs 40 are in an annular series carried by blocks 41 as anchored by bolts 42 with rim 43 of wheel having spokes 44 radiating from hub 45 loosely mounted on shaft 46 anchored by set screws 47 in brackets 48 rising from the base 3 (Fig. 2).
The blocks 41 (Fig. 6) have tongues 49 extending away from the pins 40. Bolts 50 through these tongues 49 serve adjustably tomount clips 51 radially inward therefrom to serve as releasable mounting means for records or transparencies, herein shown as slides 52. This record mounting wheel or carrier is accordingly a simple rigid structure for an endless series of records or slides 52. These slides may be readily changed by merely slacking the bolts 50, removing the slide or slides desired, substituting the other slide or slides, and then tightening the bolts 50.
The engagement of the pins 40 by the flight 33 gives an intermittent drive to the record carrier wheel. In practice a timing which has been followed is one half second for wheel travel and eight seconds for wheel rest for view or record projection. The travel distance for the required registry is adjusted by the shoe 36 as elevated by the stem 37 and locked by the nut 38.
Overtravel of the wheel is precluded. The rim 43 has notches 53. Carried by the shaft 46 is downwardly depending arm 54 held against swinging as to the shaft 46 by pin mounted in bracket 56 from the bracket 48. Compression helical spring 57 on this pin 55, holds V-shaped free end 58 of this arm 54 against the rim 43 of the carrier wheel for riding into the notches 53. These notches 53 in the rim 43 are spaced apart the view distance, or spacing between centers of the successive slides 52. Slot 59 in the bracket 48 permits such adjustment of the auxiliary bracket 56, that the held position of rest for the wheel may be brought into register position as desired for rest position 69, which aligns a record 52 with light rays from the projecting light 22, as passing through condenser 61 and by way of lens 62 for disclosure on the screen 7.
Besides the adjustment of the carrier wheel for this registry position 60, there may be adjustment of the lamp or light 22. The socket 21 carrying the bulb 22, is sustained by depending stem 63 held by set screw 64 in arm 65, having depending lug 66, which by setscrew 67 may have its tilt adjusted by re. 'ng the arm as to horizontally extending bar 68, and then anchoring by set screw. This bar 68 is carried by ears 69 on plate 71 from the bracket 48 to bracket 72 carrying the lens 61. Accordingly the action of the setscrew 67 against this plate 71 may determine the tilt position of the arm 65, while the set screw 73 between the arm 65 and the bar 68 may permit adjustment along the bar 68 toward or from the condenser 61.
Just forwardly of the bracket 72 as mounted on the base 3, is plate 74 adjustably held to the base 3 by bolt 75. Eccentrically of this plate 74 rises stem 76, to which is anchored by set screw 77, an arm 78 carrying the socket 17. In practice with the main projector light of say one thousand watt size, the flicker or border light 18 may be of four hundred watt size.
The shaft 31 as extendin in o the housing 'es bevel pinion 79 in mesh with inion 80 on shaft 81 (Figs. 2, 3), eX- ing through bracket 82 to carry sprocket l 83. From this sprocket wheel 83 up- 'dly extends sprocket chain 84 about ocket wheel 85 on shaft 86 carried by 'acket 87 mounted on the base 3. On this iaft 86 is rotary shutter 88 of an extent to rreate flicker client as to light rays from the ght 18 passing condenser 89 as carried by the bracket 87 and transmitted through border design openings 90 of the bracket 87. This bracket 87 has an opaque region 91 centrally of the border 90, avoiding disturbance between the light as projected from the bulb 18 and the light as projected from the bulb 22.
Bolts 92 serve to anchor housing 4 on the base 3. This housing 4 has ventilation openings 93 and carries a tubular throat or Window 94 forwardly of the shutter 88, 1n which 11s mounted border or flicker device lens 95, as carried by sleeve 96. Bolt 97 as mounting the tubular extension 94 on the housing 4 at opening 6, permits such directing of this lens that the flicker device may effect projection of light rays upon the screen 7.215 a border surrounding the projected view but not interfering with such view. By placing flecks 99 of colored gelatine on the condenser 89, such translucent coiored flecks asregistering with the border openings 90 of the bracket 87, transmit tints or colored light rays to the screen 7, thereby further, accentuating the attention callpower on the eyes of observers to the advertising or other matter disclosed on the screen 7.
The main housing 4 above the window opening 6 has opening 5 registering with of light as projected through the The housing 4 on the rear side, or the side adjacent the driving sprocket chain .29, has door 98, which may be openedto gain access to the housing for such adjustment of the tight and the shoe 36, as well as for lubricant replenishment, as may arise in operation. The front of this housing 93 has door 160 which may be opened for the adjustment of the flicker device light 18, replenishn'ient of such light, and other purposes. The front side of the housing 4 has a second door 101, which may be opened to effect adjustment of the main light 22, replacement of such light, as well as for charging the view or record carrier wheel with slides 52.
The structure is substantial and compact, of strong advertising calling power. The
ranges for effecti-re projection do not require niceties of adjustment beyond that herein provided, and there is resultant simplicity in construction for obtaining superior practi :11 results.
