Process for the production of methoxy-chloi-benzanthrone. The. The present invention relates to a process for the production of a new benzanthrone derivative, namely methoxy-chlorobenzanthrone.
The individual stages of the process consist of the production of nitro-chlorobenzanthrone, reduction of this body, conversion of the reduction product into hydroxychlorobenzanthrone and conversion of the hydroxychlorobenzanthrone into methoxychlorobenzanthrone.
Example: <B> 600 </B> parts (all parts listed are parts by weight) of technical grade 13-monochlorobenzanthrone (melting point <B> 174-1780 0) </B> are converted into <B> 3000 </B> parts Nitrobenzene dissolved in the heat. The solution is then cooled to 400 C. and 500 parts by weight of concentrated nitric acid (with a specific weight of 1.4) are then added to the same with vigorous stirring . The inflow of the same is extended to a period of 11 / 2-2 hours, during which time the temperature is kept at 40-50 ° C; here the temperature is increased to 80-90 ° C. and held at this level for three hours.
After this time, the nitro-chlorobenzanthrone has separated and the reaction product is filtered off. The paste obtained is washed free of nitrobenzene with benzene and finally washed with alcohol and dried. The melting point of the pipe product is <B> 265-270 0 C. </B> It can be recrystallized from hot nitrobenzene, whereupon it melts at <B> 287-2900 C </B>.
According to the analysis that was finally carried out, the product contains approximately 4.47% nitrogen and 11.63% chlorine; the theoretical figures are 4.5411 / o nitrogen and 11.5% chlorine.
<B> 31 </B> parts by weight of the nitro-chlorobenzanthrone presented according to the above information are added to <B> 186 </B> parts by weight of pyridine which contains 24.5 parts of zinc dust in suspension. At a temperature of approximately 60 ° C., 95 parts by weight of hydrochloric acid (35%) are added to the mixture, and the temperature of the mixture is then increased to 80-90 ° C. for two hours held.
The mixture is colored deep red and all the materials seem to go into solution. At the end of the reaction the mixture becomes almost colorless with a green fluorescent. At this point the solvent can be removed by steam distillation and the product can be filtered. It appears to be composed of amido-chlorobenzanthi-one.
The crude product obtained by the reduction process is diazotized according to a known method by suspending it in hydrochloric acid and adding sodium nitrite, and here it is converted into the hydroxychlorobenzanthrone by boiling.
The crude hydroxy-chlorobenzanthrone is suspended in nitrobenzene and inethylated with dimethyl sulfate in the presence of sodium carbonate, or, preferably, the crude product is extracted with caustic soda solution (50%); the impurities are left behind and the alkaline filtrates give methoxy-chlorobenzanthrone after treatment with dimethyl sulfate.
Metlioxy <B> - </B> chlorine <B> - </B> benzantlirone can be obtained by crystallizing from its greenish-brown nitrobenzene solution in brown rectangular prisms. The crystals melt at 210--211 <B> 'C. </B>
The solution of the product in strong sulfuric acid is bluish red. When the sulfuric acid solution is poured into water, a greenish-yellow fluffy precipitate is obtained.
The Metboxy <B> - </B> eblor <B> - </B> benzanthron gives a dye when melted with caustic potash, which appears to be dimethoxy-isodibenzanthroti and gives a violet-blue vat, from which cotton and other materials in shades of blue colored and turn reddish-blue when oxidized.
The condensation of the Metlioxy <B> - </B> chlorobenzanthrone can be carried out, for example, using alcoholic potash and the reaction mixture can be worked up by diluting with water, boiling, passing air through and filtering.
The special method already described to reduce nitro-chlorobenzanthrone is not the only one that can be used in the method according to the present invention and modified versions are given below.
<B> 1. 5 parts by weight of nitro-chloro-benzanthrone are dissolved in 40 parts by weight of aniline and heated to approximately 80 ° C. Then the <B> 3.5 </B> parts by weight of zinc and 20 parts by weight of concentrated hydrochloric acid are added drop by drop. When no more hydrogen escapes, the solution is allowed to cool. After adding enough alkali to remove any excess hydrochloric acid, the solid mixture is distilled with steam to remove the aniline. The resulting red precipitate is washed and, after drying, forms a dark red powder.
The yield is <B> 90 </B> lilo of the theoretical, and the crude product melts at <B> 273 ° C. </B>
2. 20 grams of nitro-chloro-benzanthrone are dissolved in 400 grams of concentrated sulfuric acid at normal temperature and the solution is cooled by running water. Then <B> 5 </B> gr aluminum powder are slowly added over a period of eight hours and stirring can then be continued overnight. Then the mixture is poured into four liters of water, boiled and filtered.
The green residue is then boiled with one liter of water which contains 10 grams of caustic soda, and the red precipitate is filtered off, washed and dried. The yield is <B> 15 </B> granules and the melting point of the product obtained is <B> 273--274 'C. </B>
The Roli product can be recrystallized from nitrobenzene or aniline, in which case it is obtained in long, feather-like needles with a metal reflex, which melt sharply at .280 - 2810 0; the analysis shows 4.84% nitrogen and 12.52% chlorine, instead of the theoretical number 5,
01% for nitrogen and 12.68 ".! O <B> for </B> chlorine.
The base dissolves with a bluish-red color in concentrated sulfuric acid, from which a yellow precipitate separates out on dilution, the latter turning brown-red on the addition of caustic soda. The base differs from other anthrachinone derivatives in that it forms a sulphate which is not decomposed by dilute sulfuric acid.
The base is slightly soluble in most organic solvents with a yellow color, but easily soluble in aniline and nitrobenzene. With acetic anhydride, it gives a very characteristic derivative.
