Process for the production of Alhylresorcinen. The invention relates to a process for the preparation of alkyl resorcinols.
It is known to produce alkyl resorcinols by reducing alkyl resoreyl iietones with zinc amalgam.
It has been proposed, for the production of lower alkyl resorcinols, starting from the corresponding alkyl resorcyl alcohols, to carry out the reduction by means of a large amount of zinc amalgam in the presence of hydrochloric acid. In particular, it has also been suggested that one part of alkylresorcylic acid, 8 parts of zinc amalgam, five parts of hydrochloric acid and five parts of water act on one another. The reduction proceeds, but not only slowly under these conditions, for example it requires 29 hours at the boiling point of the reaction mixture, but further amounts of hydrochloric acid must also be added during the course of the reaction.
The process for the preparation of alkyl resorcinols according to the present invention is characterized in that no more than about 21/2 times the weight of the acyl resorcinol is used in zinc amalgam and the reduction is carried out with vigorous stirring of the mixture at elevated temperature.
The process according to the present invention can not only be carried out in a shorter time, but the alkylresorcinols can then also be obtained in a better yield and purer than by the previous methods. If a smaller amount of zinc amalgam is used, the acid has a much better effect on the zinc, without it being necessary to add further quantities of acid to the mixture in order to complete the reaction.
Furthermore, because the reduction is carried out with vigorous stirring, a semi-emulsion is formed in which the oil is intimately mixed with the aqueous acid.
The reduction can be carried out at 105 C.
Zinc amalgam can be made by amalgamating granulated zinc with a 20% solution of xercuric chloride. The completion of the reduction of the resorcyl ketone can easily be determined by testing a few drops of the oily products, which are dissolved in a few cubic centimeters of alcohol with a drop of ferric chloride solution. If this test does not show a red color, the reduction is complete.
The following example will illustrate the process according to this invention for the production of hexylresorcinol starting from an oily resorcyl ketone which was obtained by condensation of resorcinol and caproic acid by means of zinc chloride.
With vigorous stirring at about 1.55, one part by weight of capronylresorcin is reduced by means of 21/2 ”files of zinc amalgam dissolved in five parts of hydrochloric acid (20 Be) and six parts of water. The reduction is completed in 10 to 12 hours. The reduction product is washed with water, the amount of which is the same as that of the reduction product and separated from the water layer.
The reduction product is then distilled in vacuo, which removes the last traces of water and finally the hexavalent resin is distilled. It has a boiling point, the b-i 215 to 220 'is 18 mm. The distillate solidifies on cooling and then melts at 45 to 55. Another distillation and recrystallization from a mixture of toluene and petroleum ether gives the product as white crystals which melt at 57 to 58.5.
Other alkyl resorcinols can be prepared in a similar manner. Among the alkyl resorcinols obtainable in this way, the following should be mentioned below, indicating the melting point and the boiling point of each compound in the purified state:
