On voit fig.
Des explications lqui précèdent, en réfé rence à. la fig. 4 du dessin, il résulte que le fond des cannelures j, j est constamment à la même distance du centre de rotation du cy lindre qui les comporte; tandis que -le fond des autres cannelures<I>i, i</I> et j" s'éloigne pro gressivement du centre;
I>x.,</I> x fig.
Mechanical method of transverse rolling, by rolling, for obtaining bodies of revolution comprising several parts of different diameters and apparatus for implementing this method. The present invention comprises a mechanical process for transverse rolling, by rolling, for obtaining revolving bodies comprising several parts' of different diameters and an apparatus for carrying out this process.
The method is characterized in that a cylindrical slug of mal = leeable material is subjected to a pressure exerted by at least two similar rolling members whose cooperating parts move in the opposite direction and at the same speed, these members exhibiting grooves of varying depths and acting on the cylindrical piece \ so that it turns on itself and undergoes a similar deformation along its diametrically opposed generators, by following the shape of the profile of the rolling members as and as they move:
The apparatus is characterized in that it comprises at least two similar rolling members, the cooperating parts of which move in the opposite direction and at the same speed, these members having grooves of variable depths, starting for each member. on the same line perpendicular to the direction of movement of this member and ending flush with the upper surface of the latter, members being intended to exert pressure on <B> a </B> cylindrical piece of material malleable, caught between them, so as to make it turn on itself and to subject it, along two diametrically opposed generatrices, to a deformation corresponding to the profile of the grooves.
In general, the rolling members are rolls rotating in the same direction and whose axes are parallel.
The appended drawing represents schematically, by way of example, various phases of the process, and an embodiment of an apparatus for obtaining a bicycle hub.

The, fig. 10 is a view similar to FIG. 7 showing the cylinders and the piece at the end of the operation; Fig. 11 is a sectional view perpendicular to the axes of the cylinders of the. fig. 10. The same reference numbers or letters indicate in all the figures of the drawing similar components.
With reference to fig. 1 to 6, to obtain a bicycle hub e, f, <I> g </I> (fig. 2), the solid cylindrical slug (fig. 1) is of such size that, d ' on the one hand, its volume is equal to that of the hub to be obtained and that, on the other hand, its diameter is equal to the largest diameter of the hub, or that rte two flanges e and e '.
The rolling rolls 1 and 2 are arranged in the same plane and their shafts are parallel to each other. The table of these cylinders is notched with five grooves i, i ', j, j', j2, the depth of which is the same at the level of a generator B fig. 4, 5 and 6. This depth is equal to the magnitude a existing between the smallest and the largest of the spokes of the hub fig. 2. The cylinders 1 and 2 (fig. 4) have a notch 1c of depth a made along a generatrix B.
This notch allows the insertion of the slug and the withdrawal of the finished hub between the two minor cylinders. The grooves of these cylinders by tent of and end at this notch.
The grooves J. J 'corresponding to the flanges e., E' of the hub have an equal depth over the entire circumference of each cylinder.
On the contrary, the grooves <I> i, i '</I> corresponding to the frustoconical heads g, g' of the hub slowly decrease in depth from B to sector III (fig. 4 and 6). From this point to sector XIZ 'the depth remains constant.
The median groove j \ has a decreasing depth, similar to that of the grooves i. i 'to. from generator B to sector III, then this depth continues to decrease gradually up to sector XIII and finally remains unchanged up to the notch k.
To obtain the truncated cones of the heads g, g 'of the hub, the bottom of the splines i, i' gradually inclines with respect to. the axis of the cylinders up to. a value corresponding to the inclination of the generatrices of said truncated cones and the depth of these grooves increases throughout the sector XV while maintaining their constant inclination and then this depth no longer varies up to the notch 1c.
The production of the hub from the billet is carried out entirely during one complete revolution of the roll rollers. During this turn, the working plot completes sixteen corresponding revolutions on itself. each to. a fraction of the circumference of the cylinders marked from T to XVI with the threads. 4, 5 and 6. It is noted, in these views, that these portions of circumference are not equal in length, they vary naturally according to the diameter of the part of the hub being formed in contact with the cylinders.
These portions go. by gradually decreasing during the first fourteen rotations of the billet which involve the formation of the cylindrical part f of the hub. The fifteenth rotation involves a greater development on the rolling rolls, because the central part being finished, the rolling takes place only on the frustoconical heads of the part, when they have a larger diameter than that of the body of the hub, therefore a greater development.
Finally, the sixteenth sector corresponds to the last round of finishing before the finished part returns to the housing constituted by the notches k to allow the evacuation of the finished object and its replacement by another piece to be worked.
We see fig. 5, on the unevenness of the table of one of the rolling rolls, sections corresponding to sectors I, III, VI, XI and XV which clearly show the profile of the five grooves in these sectors. In fig. 6, the hatched part shows the longitudinal profile of the median groove j = which shapes the. middle part f of the hub (fig. 2).
The development (fig. 5) shows that the five splines of cylinders 1 and 2I go apart in an irregular manner, from their origin. This separation continues to sector XTII. On the routes of sectors XIII and MT, intended to complete the work carried out so far, all the grooves come parallel to those j ,. i ,. j2 keep their parallelism until the notch k.
In sector XV la. pressure is taken up by the bottom key splines <I> i, i </I> on the heads g ,, g 'of the hub to give them their taper, it follows that said splines <I> i, i' </ I > widen again and gradually throughout the course of this sector to become parallel again on the last course XVI intended for the completion of the whole of the room.
Explanations lqui above, with reference to. fig. 4 of the drawing, it follows that the bottom of the grooves j, j is constantly at the same distance from the center of rotation of the cylinder which comprises them; while -the bottom of the other grooves <I> i, i </I> and j "gradually move away from the center;
when traversing the periphery of the cylinder in the direction of the numerical order of sectors I to XVI. The bands <I> v </I> and <I> v '</I> of the cylinder table which are if killed on each side of the splines are con centric to the bottom of the splines and at a distance equal to a, from this background.
It follows that in order to obtain the hub (fig. 2) starting from the blank c (fig. 1), the distance between the two minor cylinders 1 and 2, between the generators B is adjusted so that this spacing is equal to the diameter of the blank (fig. 4) and that consequently the distance between the bands v and v 'of the cylinder table is equal to the thickness of the part f of the hub to be obtained. Cylinders 1 and 2 are identically similar.
but are placed in such a way that the transverse notches the section in a semicircle are symmetrically opposed and that the curvature of these has for common center the center of the slug c, so that the latter can be inserted between the cylinders in the cylindrical space left by said notches when they are opposite each other.
The two rolling rolls 1 and 2 being established in the manner described above are arranged as shown in Figs. 3, and 4, that is to say the notches <I> le </I> facing each other, leaving between them the space necessary for the introduction between the two cylinders of the slug c, which is pushed into position exactly between the grooves j, j \.
Sector I is bounded by generator B \ and by generator b, the midpoint. between these two generators is indicated by a. For plot c, the points or generatrices of contact with the generatrices B of the two: cylinders 1, 2 are indicated by <I> m, </I> n.
Figs. 3, 4, 7 and 8 show the cylin dres 1, 2 and the piece c to the. rest position corresponding to the start of the operation when the blank has. been set up in the 7th indentations.
As soon as the rolling rolls are set in rotation, in the same direction, indicated by the arrows, they act by friction with pressure on the sheet c following two generators of it, diametrically opposed. 'we consider only the two pressure generators <I> in, </I> ii of said piece and the two corresponding generatrices B of cylinders 1, 2, when said generators B have moved away and have been replaced exactly by those cr,
the generators in and ii of the plot will have replaced each other. Indeed, iii will be. coming into contact with <I> a. </I> of cylinder 2, while n. will have come into contact with a of cylinder 1. It follows. that this plot will have made a half turn of rotation on the spot. As the cylinders continue to rotate, when the generators b have replaced those B, the plot will have made a full revolution and its generators iii., It will have returned to. their starting point.
For this first round of the plot, if we take the. generator m, where it notes that it is first in contact with cylinder 1 by generator B, then that it abandons all contact for a half-turn after which it meets cylinder 2: by generator n. Then this generator -iii loses contact again during the second half-turn after which it meets again the eyeliner 1 through the generator b.
It can be seen that during contact with <I> B </I> la, generator iii of the plot receives la. pressure of cylinder 1 but no imprint since it is the starting point of the grooves j \,,), j. On the contrary, when 7n meets <I> a </I> of 2, it receives from this cylinder the pressure and simultaneously the imprint of the grooves as they exist at this point. When the same generator ni then comes to. again in contact with cylinder 1, by the. generator b, it also receives the pressure from the latter and simultaneously the imprint of the grooves at this point.
Since the depth of the rods lures j2. j,, j goes by progressing as it was explained previously, it is understood that the first imprint received by n of the. part of the generator r, of the cylinder 2 is weak and that the. second imprint which is given to the same generator Iii. by b of cylinder 1 is deeper and a little wider.
What happened to the. generator -in the plot occurs simultaneously for the diametrically opposed, generator ii, and it was the same for all the points of the cir conference of the plot, when they were in contact with the corresponding points of the. Periphery of sector I of each cylinder during the first revolution of the billet which takes place during the fraction of a revolution of the cylinders 1, 2, corresponding to the. periphery of each of said sectors T.
At each passage of a sector of the cylinders, the plot makes a revolution and we always consider the generators iit, ii., These receive indentations which cross either in depth, or in width, or in depth. thickness and width, depending on the sector.
So in the example chosen and drawn, when sectors III will work, the way the plot swims will be. such that the heads <I> g, </I> g \ au have been brought to the diameter of the large base of their cone and that, from this moment on, the bottom of the corresponding grooves â, i \ r its, pressure, but the,
cane lure I will continue. the same cycle throughout sector III and the following ones up to that XIII after which said groove j 'will cease to exert its pressure, until the notch. k.
In the route of sectors XIII and XIV, intended for. complete the work done so far. end of sector XII, all the grooves do not exert pressure but rotate the piece by simple friction.
In sector XV, the grooves i, i \ start again at. exert their progressive pressure and hand hold it throughout the course of the said sector. by their background. which tilts, from the start of the sector, to a value similar to. the inclination of the. generator of the cone of the heads.
Then during the route to sector XVI, these grooves <I> i, </I> i \ become concentric and contribute, with the others, to the general completion of the piece.
Although the plot does not tend to change places during its. rotation, since the cylinders rotate at the same speed. it is preferable to have on both sides of the plot two rollers <I> x., </I> x fig. 8 and 11, to avoid any displacement.
The rolling rolls could be more than two in number. all the cylinders would progressively participate in the embedding of the imprints of each sector in the plot, in proportion to. their number, that is to say '/ 3 for three cylinders, 1/4 for four and so on.
The rolling rolls could be replaced by two flat tables which would be the development of the circumference of the rolls as shown in FIGS. 5 and 6. These tables would constitute slides which would be suitably guided and actuated in any suitable manner to walk in the opposite direction to each other. In addition, the grooves of the rolling members, instead of decreasing irregularly in depths, can do so regularly, in order to constitute a progressive slope along the table of the rolling members.
