Electric heater. This invention relates to electric heaters and more particularly to fireplace type heaters and portable heaters.
The radiator according to the invention comprises a titi hollow core of refractory material crossed by vertical ducts for the passage of air and air minus a heating element arranged on the front face of said core, the part of the heat of the element being distributed by radiation and another part penetrating into the nucleus which distributes it by conduction.
One form is shown, by way of example, in the accompanying drawing, in which FIG. 1 is Lille front view of a radiator of the "fireplace" type established according to the invention; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the radiator along 2-2, fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the core or body of ceramic or refractory material on which the heating elements are disposed; Fig. 4 is a detail of the anterior face of the core and shows a heating element disposed in a groove of said core.
The radiator shown is of the "chimney" type, that is to say in which the major part of the heat generated is distributed by radiation. The heating elements are arranged on the front face of the radiator and are supported so that they quickly turn red. This is achieved by supporting these elements so that they only come into contact with the support at spaced points, these points being of small surface area so that the heat transmitted to the support by conduction represents only a small fraction of the heat generated.
The radiator therefore produces its effect almost as soon as the electric circuit has been established.
The radiator shown in the accompanying drawing comprises a casing 2, shaped so as to simulate andirons. The casing has a lower wall 3 on which is supported a hollow body or core 4 made of refractory material. The core 4 comprises a front wall b curved outwardly, a rear wall 6 spaced from the front wall, and transverse walls 7 interconnecting the front and rear walls and defining inside the core a series of vertical channels 8 allowing air to pass through the core.
The heating elements are arranged on the front face of the core, and the heat, which is absorbed on said face by conduction and radiation, is partially transmitted through the walls 7 to the wall 6, so that one obtains a large heated surface, the heat of which is easily transmitted to the columns of air contained in the channels 8, and that an air current is established inside said channels. The lower wall 'a has openings 9 opening into the channels 8 so that hot air currents rise to,
inside said channels when the radiator is operating. The core has on its front face a series of grooves 12 in which the heating elements 13 are arranged. These grooves extend horizontally across the front face of the core and their lower 14 and upper 15 walls are s' shaped. tilting down and back.
Each of the grooves also narrows towards its bottom 16 and the heating element 13 has a diameter such that, when it is placed in the groove, it touches the front wall 14 below said upper edge of said wall, presses against the rear wall 15, but does not touch the bottom 16.
Thanks to this arrangement, there is only a small contact surface between the heating element and the hollow body and it follows that little heat is transmitted by conduction to the heaven body and that the heating elements are quickly worn red. Each heating element is disposed partially below the upper edge of the face 14 of the groove, so that it is fully supported and prevented from bending and that when it expands by the effect of an elevation of temperature, it is clamped even more perfectly inside the groove.
The hollow body is preferably made of a white clay composition which is eminently refractory and which has the property of reflecting heat, so due to the radiating heat of the heating element against the face of the hollow body is partially reflected outward.
The upper wall 15 of the groove behaves like a reflector and its shape is such that the third part of the heat rays impinging on this wall is reflected forwards.
The core is disposed <inside the casing 2.at a certain distance from the rear wall (the said casing, so that a duct is obtained between the rear wall 6 of the core and the rear wall 17 of the casing, the lower wall;) 'having openings 18 allowing air to enter this duct. The core is rounded on its upper rear edge to polish constitues' a united path assuring the regular escape of air rising inside said duct.
The upper part of the casing is closed by a covering plate 19 having or vertures, which plate goes from the upper front edge of the casing to the upper edge of the rear wall, and the hot air rising in said ducts of the core and in the duct behind the core is distributed: inside the chamber through the openings of the coating plate.
There is a heating element, constituted by a titi coil of resistance wire, separated 13 in each groove, the ends of the wire being extended rearwardly through openings in the core and being connected at the rear of said core to busbars '' 1 or to other> terminal gctires,
these bars or terminals being suitably connected to til cl ', ttnen @ e current. When the heating elements are connected in parallel, virtually no drop in potential occurs between the adjacent points of the consecutive elements. In addition, in the event that titi element were to burn out, it would be easy to take it apart and replace it with a new one.
In the radiator described, the contact between the heating element and either support takes place only in areas of small surfaces, so that the heating element is turned red and gives the apparatus the pleasant appearance of 'an incandescent hearth, although part of the heat is distributed by conduction.
