Abstract

A field adjustable mattress system/method allowing a baseline mattress configuration to be ergonomically modified after initial installation is disclosed. The baseline system generally consists of an optional bottom mattress support (BMS) connected to a bottom mattress cover (BMC) that partially envelops a static mattress core (SMC) from the bottom. A top mattress cover (TMC) completes the encapsulation of the foam mattress core and is attached to the BMC using top/bottom mattress cover zippers (MCZ). Field adjustment of the mattress system is accomplished by inserting one or more mattress adjustment layers (MAL) between the top of the SMC and the TMC and inserting an adjustment border panel (ABP) via the MCZ between the TMC and the BMC. The MAL may comprise one or more layers and may be inserted using horizontally and/or split configurations to permit a variety of ergonomic combinations to be supported in a single mattress system.

The present invention generally relates to systems and methods for mattress construction.
Specifically, the present invention in many preferred embodiments has application to situations in which an adjustment of a mattress must be made in the field to conform to the ergonomic requirements of a user.
PRIOR ART AND BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Generally speaking, individual mattress systems that utilize a static core construction, usually composed of a combination of foam and spring components, have limited options as to their "firmness" and thus their ergonomic comfort for individuals requiring custom firmness levels to provide an optimal sleeping arrangement.
While there do exist non-static-core adjustable mattresses, the current state of the art does not describe a mattress system that can provide adjustable ergonomics while maintaining the benefits associated with static-core mattress construction.
It should be noted that while it is possible to construct static-core mattresses of different firmness levels, it is exceptionally inconvenient to replace these
3 mattress systems as their delivery and installation is somewhat difficult given their bulk and weight.
Thus, frequent adjustment of the mattress by replacement is not an option for most individuals. Furthermore, even if this were possible, it may be necessary to make mattress adjustments on a frequent basis based on medical issues, such as back injuries or recurring hip/joint pain.
Additionally, many circumstances in which a static-core mattress construction is desirable may have other issues regarding mattress cleaning and hygiene. Thus, there is a need in the prior art to support a foam mattress system that is economical yet field adjustable.
OBJECTIVES OF THE INVENTION
Accordingly, the objectives of the present invention are (among others) to circumvent the deficiencies in the prior art and affect the following objectives in the context of a field adjustable mattress system and method:
(1) Provide for a mattress system and method that permits a baseline mattress system to be adjusted in the field with minimal effort.
(2) Provide for a mattress system and method that permits a baseline mattress system to be reconfigured to coordinate with a variety of bed linens.
(3) Provide for a mattress system and method that permits the mattress system height to be easily adjusted.
(4) Provide for a mattress system and method that permits different portions of the mattress to be configured with different firmness characteristics.
(5) Provide for a mattress system and method that permits the mattress core to be protected from soiling.
(6) Provide for a mattress system and method that permits the longevity of the mattress core to be increased.
(7) Provide for a mattress system and method that permits the firmness of the mattress to be adjusted in a non-linear fashion.
(8) Provide for a mattress system and method that permits field adjustment of mattress firmness without requiring movement or reinstallation of the mattress system.
(9) Provide for a mattress system and method that permits easy cleaning of the mattress.
(10) Provide for a mattress system and method that is resistant to liquid and solid soiling.
While these objectives should not be understood to limit the teachings of the present invention, in general these objectives are achieved in part or in whole by the disclosed invention that is discussed in the following sections. One skilled in the art will no doubt be able to select aspects of the present invention as disclosed to affect any combination of the objectives described above.
BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The present invention allows a baseline mattress configuration to be augmented with a variety of mattress adjustment layers (MAL) to form a field-customizable mattress system.
The baseline mattress system includes a bottom mattress cover (BMC) that covers a static mattress core (SMC) from the bottom and part of the sides. A top mattress cover (TMC) covers the remainder of the SMC and is 5 attached to the BMC via the use of top and bottom mattress cover half-zippers (MCZ) and/or other fasteners.
This baseline mattress system may be adjusted in the field by inserting one or more mattress adjustment layers (MAL) between the top of the SMC and the TMC and inserting an adjustment border panel (ABP) via the MCZ between the TMC
and the BMC. The ABP contains top and bottom MCZ that mate with corresponding MCZ on the TMC and BMC. Zipper sliders are used to affect the mating of the TMC to the ABP and the ABP to the BMC using the corresponding MCZ that are located on the periphery of the TMC, ABP, and BMC. The MAL may comprise one or more mattress layers including foam, latex, batting, air/water/fluid bladders, heating/cooling pads, etc., and may be inserted using horizontally and/or split configurations to permit a variety of ergonomic combinations to be supported by the baseline mattress system.

DESCRIPTION OF THE PRESENTLY PREFERRED EXEMPLARY
EMBODIMENTS
While this invention is susceptible of embodiment in many different forms, there is shown in the drawings and will herein be described in detailed preferred embodiment of the invention with the understanding that the present disclosure is to be considered as an exemplification of the principles of the invention and is not intended to limit the broad aspect of the invention to the embodiment illustrated.
The numerous innovative teachings of the present application will be described with particular reference to the presently preferred embodiment, wherein these innovative teachings are advantageously applied to the particular problems of a FIELD ADJUSTABLE MATTRESS SYSTEM AND METHOD.
However, it should be understood that this embodiment is only one example of the many advantageous uses of the innovative teachings herein. In general, statements made in the specification of the present application do not
17 necessarily limit any of the various claimed inventions.
Moreover, some statements may apply to some inventive features but not to others.
Static Mattress Core (SMC) Not Limitive The present invention describes a preferred embodiment in terms of a static mattress core (SMC) that forms the foundation on which the system defines a variety of field-adjustable configurations. This SMC may be in the form of a foam mattress core or other types of static mattress cores such as spring, latex, air bladder, water bladder, etc. The present invention makes no limitation on the exact type of SMC used in a particular embodiment.
Material Not Limitive Many preferred invention embodiments utilize flame retardant material for the top mattress cover (TMC), adjustment border panel (ABP), bottom mattress cover (BMC), static mattress core (SMC), mattress adjustment layer(s) (MAL), and/or optional bottom mattress support (BMS).
However, this is not necessarily a limitation of the invention scope.
TMC/ABP/BMC Fastener Not Limitive Many preferred invention embodiments utilize zippers to attach the ABP to the TMC and BMC. The present invention also anticipates that a hook-and-loop fastener could be used for this purpose as well as buttons, studs, plastic zippers, lacing, or hooks and eyelets. Additionally, the fastener means may be covered in some circumstances with a decorative border to hide the fastener interface between the ABP and the TMC / BMC.
18 System Overview The present invention in various embodiments addresses one or more of the above objectives in the following manner:
= Rather than forming a mattress using a singular mattress construction, the present invention uses a baseline static mattress core (SMC) that supports a number of mattress adjustment layers (MAL) that may be configured to provide a variety of ergonomic comfort configurations.
= The SMC is covered on the bottom and a portion of the sides using a bottom mattress cover that incorporates a half-zipper along its periphery.
= This BMC half-zipper mates with a corresponding half-zipper on a top mattress cover (TMC) that provides complete encapsulation of the SMC within the mattress system.
= The BMC is optionally supported by an optional bottom mattress support (BMS) non-skid layer that provides for a proper interface between the mattress system and the supporting surface.
= To adjust the mattress system in the field, the TMC/BMC
zipper is unzipped, the TMC is removed, and one or more mattress adjustment layers (MAL) are placed on top of the SMC. The bottom periphery of an adjustment border panel (ABP) is then attached to the top periphery of the BMC using peripheral half-zippers.
The top periphery of the ABP is then attached to the bottom periphery of the TMC using peripheral half-zippers.
= The MAL may comprise unitary layers of mattress material of various firmness levels but also may
19 comprise separate left/right mattress layers that are individually configured to different users on the mattress system.
One skilled in the art will recognize that the various embodiments depicted herein may be combined to produce a variety of system configurations consistent with the teachings of the invention.
Baseline Mattress Configuration (0100)-(1600) FIG. 1 (0100) - FIG. 16 (1600) depict the baseline mattress configuration. The individual components of the mattress baseline configuration will now be discussed in terms of the exploded assembly views of FIG. 15 (1500) and FIG. 16 (1600).
Here the baseline mattress system is configured with an optional bottom mattress support (BMS) non-skid fabric (1510, 1610) on which the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (1520, 1620) is supported.
Some invention embodiments may incorporate the (BMS) non-skid fabric (1510, 1610) as part of the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (1520, 1620) to form a unitary structure.
Other embodiments may omit the BMS
entirely.
The bottom mattress cover (BMC) (1520, 1620) envelops a static mattress core (SMC) (1530, 1630) that defines the baseline support structure for the sleeping system.
The bottom mattress cover (1520, 1620) does not fully encapsulate the static mattress core (SMC) (1530, 1630) but rather is augmented by a top mattress cover (TMC) (1590, 1690) that completes the encapsulation of the static mattress core (SMC) (1530, 1630) along its vertical periphery. An optional mattress fabric liner (MFL) (1570, 1670) may be incorporated as an isolation barrier between the static mattress core (SMC) (1530, 1630) and the top mattress cover (TMC) (1590, 1690).
The bottom mattress cover (BMC) (1520, 1620) and top mattress cover (TMC) (1590, 1690) are attached along their peripheral edges (1521, 1591, 1621, 1691) using a zipper with corresponding zipper (1599) 5 slider/handle.
Single-Layer Mattress Adjustment Configuration (1700)-(3200) FIG. 17 (1700) - FIG. 32 (3200) depict the mattress configured with a single-layer mattress adjustment.
The individual components of the adjusted mattress configuration 10 will now be discussed in terms of the exploded assembly views of FIG. 31 (3100) and FIG. 32 (3200).
This configuration is similar to that depicted in the baseline mattress configuration of FIG. 1 (0100) - FIG. 16 (1600) and depicts a static mattress core (SMC) (3130, 3230) on top of an optional bottom mattress support (BMS) non-skid fabric (3110, 3210).
This configuration differs from that previously depicted in that an additional mattress adjustment layer (MAL) (3140, 3240) has been inserted on top of the static mattress core (SMC) (3130, 3230) and an
20 adjustment border panel (ABP) (3180, 3280) has been added between the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (3120, 3220) and the top mattress cover (TMC) (3190, 3290). An optional mattress fabric liner (MFL) (3170, 3270) may be incorporated as an isolation barrier between the static mattress core (SMC) (3130, 3230) and the mattress adjustment layer (MAL) (3140, 3240).
The MFL (3170, 3270) may in some circumstances be attached to the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (3120, 3220) with stitching, hook-and-loop fasteners (VELCRO brand fasteners), or half-zippers configured on the peripheral edges of the MFL (3170, 3270) and (BMC) (3120, 3220).
Attachment between the adjustment border panel (ABP) (3180,
21 3280), the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (3120, 3220), and the top mattress cover (TMC) (3190, 3290) is achieved via use of half-zippers configured on the peripheral edges of the adjustment border panel (ABP) (3180, 3280), the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (3120, 3220), and the top mattress cover (TMC) (3190, 3290) which are engaged together via the use of a conventional zipper slide.
Multi-Layer Mattress Adjustment Confiauration (3300)-(4800) FIG. 33 (3300) - FIG. 48 (4800) depict the mattress configured with a multi-layer mattress adjustment. The individual components of the multi-layer mattress configuration will now be discussed in terms of the exploded assembly views of FIG. 47 (4700) and FIG. 48 (4800).
This configuration is similar to that depicted in the single-layer mattress configuration of FIG. 17 (1700) - FIG.
32 (3200) and depicts a static mattress core (SMC) (4730, 4830) on top of an optional bottom mattress support (BMS) non-skid fabric (4710, 4810).
This configuration differs from that previously depicted in that multiple additional mattress adjustment layers (MAL) (4740, 4840, 4750, 4850) have been inserted on top of the static mattress core (SMC) (4730, 4830) and the adjustment border panel (ABP) (4780, 4880) has been lengthened between the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (4720, 4820) and the top mattress cover (TMC) (4790, 4890). An optional mattress fabric liner (MFL) (4770, 4870) may be incorporated as an isolation barrier between the static mattress core (SMC) (4730, 4830) and the additional mattress adjustment layers (MAL) (4740, 4840, 4750, 4850).
The MFL (4770, 4870) may in some circumstances be attached to the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (4720, 4820) with stitching, hook-and-loop fasteners (VELCRO brand
22 fasteners), or a half-zippers configured on the peripheral edges of the MFL (4770, 4870) and (BMC) (4720, 4820).
Attachment between the adjustment border panel (ABP) (4780, 4880), the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (4720, 4820) and the top mattress cover (TMC) (4790, 4890) is achieved via use of half-zippers configured on the peripheral edges of the adjustment border panel (ABP) (4780, 4880), the bottom mattress cover (BMC) (4720, 4820), and the top mattress cover (TMC) (4790, 4890) which are engaged together via the use of a conventional zipper slide or other fastening means.
Split-Layer Mattress Adjustment Configuration (4900)-(5600) FIG. 49 (4900) - FIG. 56 (5600) depict the mattress configured with a split-layer mattress adjustment.
This configuration is similar to that depicted in the multi-layer mattress configuration of FIG. 33 (3300) - FIG.
48 (4800) with the exception that at least one of the mattress adjustment layers (MAL) comprises a split mattress configuration as depicted in the exploded views of FIG. 53 (5300) - FIG. 56 (5600).
This configuration is significant for a variety of reasons.
First, two persons sharing the same bed may configure the firmness on the left/right sides of the bed differently without impacting the overall functionality of the mattress.
Second, the use of these split-layers may form a multi-layer mattress in which the combination of layers presents a non-linear firmness to the user depending on the amount of pressure applied to the mattress and the firmness of each individual layer. As generally depicted in these figures, the foam inset pattern for the individual MAL
layers may be formed differently to provide for a different firmness. The MAL layers may also be formed of a different
23 mattress material or a mattress material with a different composition to affect this firmness differential.
Multi-Split-Layer Mattress Adjustment Embodiment (5700)-(6400) FIG. 57 (5700) - FIG. 64 (6400) depict the mattress configured with a multi-split-layer mattress adjustment.
This configuration is similar to that depicted in FIG. 49 (4900) - FIG. 56 (5600) with the exception that in the views provided in the split-layer MAL depicted in FIG. 49 (4900) -FIG. 56 (5600), the split-layer MAL comprises the top mattress layer. As depicted in FIG. 57 (5700) - FIG. 64 (6400), some invention embodiments may incorporate a full-mattress layer on top of both of these split-layers to eliminate the seam between the two adjacent left/right MAL
layers.
As with previously depicted embodiments, the MAL layers depicted in FIG. 57 (5700) - FIG. 64 (6400) may be individually formed of a different mattress material or a mattress material with a different composition to affect firmness differentials in the various layers. These layers may in combination produce a non-linear overall firmness level that is dependent on applied pressure.
This non-linear firmness characteristic is highly beneficial in situations where custom ergonomics is desired in the mattress.
Within these MAL layering contexts, it is important to note that the order in which the MAL layer firmness varies can be configured to the user preferences such that in some instances, layers may be more firm with increasing depth and in other cases, the firmness may actually decrease with increasing depth. All of these combinations have specific application to a variety of user comfort settings and are
24 possible with this configuration, but not possible using conventional mattress construction.
Seamented MAL Adjustments (6500)-(6800) As generally depicted in FIG. 65 (6500) - FIG. 68 (6800), the present invention anticipates that the MAL may be segmented into a plurality of MAL segments oriented on a common plane, oriented on the top of the SMC or atop a lower MAL structure.
This permits, for example, splitting mattress support in shoulder, lumbar, and leg pieces as generally depicted in FIG. 65 (6500) - FIG. 66 (6600). As generally depicted in FIG. 67 (6700) - 68 (6800), this also permits linear and non-linear elevation contours to be incorporated throughout the MAL structure to accommodate a variety of customer ergonomic needs. These field-adjustable mattress configurations are especially useful in rehabilitation situations and scenarios in which the consumer has chronic medical conditions that require specialized body support.
Contoured MAL Adjustments (6900)-(7200) The present invention anticipates that one or more of the MAL structures may incorporate contouring as generally depicted in FIG. 69 (6900) - FIG. 72 (7200). Here it can be seen that separate left (6901) and right (6902) MAL
structures are illustrated wherein the left MAL (6901) provides for an upward dome contour and the right MAL (6902) provides for a downward dome contour. Cross sections of the MAL layers in the assembly of FIG. 69 (6900) are depicted in FIG. 70 (7000) - FIG. 72 (7200) illustrating the dome contours.
Note that these dome structures are only indicative of a wide variety of contours that may be implemented, including contours that are customized to a particular customer. Thus, it is possible to customize the left and right MAL structures to facilitate the specific needs of a given individual.
SMC Variations (7300)-(8000) The present invention anticipates that the static 5 mattress core (SMC) may take a variety of forms.
As generally depicted in FIG. 73 (7300) - FIG. 76 (7600), the SMC may in some preferred embodiments be constructed of mattress foam, memory foam, latex foam, gel foam, and/or gel impregnated foam or combinations thereof. As depicted in 10 FIG. 77 (7700) - FIG. 78 (7800), the SMC may also be constructed with internal bladders containing air, water, and/or gel (7701, 7801). As generally depicted in FIG. 79 (7900) - FIG. 80 (8000), the SMC may also be constructed using springs (7901) or pocket coil cores (8001).
One 15 skilled in the art will recognize that these combinations of SMC construction are only illustrative of a wide variety of application specific embodiments that may incorporate any of the materials listed above.
In many embodiments the SMC
will comprise material combinations typically utilized in 20 conventional mattress "core" construction.
Integrated Adjustment Border Panels (8100)-(8200) As generally depicted within FIG. 81 (8100) - FIG. 82 (8200), the adjustment border panel (ABP) may be integrated within the top mattress cover (TMC).
In these
25 configurations, the addition of an additional MAL layer incorporates the replacement of the corresponding TMC to correspond to the new overall adjusted mattress system thickness.
TMC Edge Pioina (8300) ¨ (8400) As generally depicted within FIG. 83 (8300) - FIG. 84 (8400), in some preferred embodiments the TMC may
26 incorporate edge piping (8301, 8401) on its top peripheral edge to form a sharper edge profile than that normally provided by the TMC without edge piping.
TMC/ABP Fastener Cover (8500) ¨ (8800) As generally depicted within FIG. 85 (8500) - FIG. 88 (8800), in some preferred embodiments the TMC may incorporate a decorative fastener cover (DFC) (8501, 8601, 8701, 8801) on its bottom peripheral edge to cover the zipper or other fastener means used to mate with the ABP.
The ABP (not shown) may similarly be configured with a DFC
on its bottom peripheral edge.
TMC/ABP/BMC Section Details (8900)-(9600) Additional section details for various embodiments of the present invention are depicted generally in FIG. 89 (8900) - FIG. 96 (9600). It should be noted that the MFL
may be attached to the BMC using a variety of methods, including but not limited to stitching, hook-and-loop fasteners, snap fasteners, buttons, zippers, etc. This connection may be used in conjunction with fastening means used to connect the TMC/ABP to the BMC.
Application Contexts While the present invention may have a variety of application contexts, several of the following are preferred:
= The top mattress cover (TMC) may be configured utilizing fabric comprising a waterproof barrier. This configuration is very useful in applications for elderly individuals that may suffer from incontinence or for small children or individuals susceptible to bed-wetting.
27 = A mattress fabric liner (MFL) may be utilized beneath the TMC to isolate the SMC from the TMC and/or MAL
layers.
= The thickness of the MAL may be adjusted to aid elderly persons in entering and leaving the mattress bed. By raising the effective height of the mattress, it is possible to significantly reduce the effort required to both enter and leave the bedding area.
= The top cover may be configured using machine washable fabric in order to allow laundering of the top cover to remove dust mites and other insects that tend to live in bed linens.
= The top cover may be easily removed and exchanged for another top cover having a different color or texture to conform to a bed linen color scheme.
= Since the overall firmness of the mattress system may be defined by a relatively thin MAL layer or layers, these layers may be easily replaced/swapped depending on the needs of the end-user.
This is especially important in situations where a recurring injury may require a different mattress configuration, or in situations where a common mattress must be used for a variety of end-users, such as in a nursing home or rehabilitation facility.
In these circumstances, it would be exceptionally difficult and inefficient to replace the entire mattress when a different firmness is required, but with the use of thin MAL layers of different firmness levels, the adjustment can be made quickly with little effort as these thin MAL layers are light and easily manipulated.
28 One skilled in the art will recognize that the various embodiments depicted herein may be combined to produce a variety of system configurations consistent with the teachings of the invention that are not necessarily limited to the above application contexts.

A field adjustable mattress system/method allowing a baseline mattress configuration to be ergonomically modified after initial installation has been disclosed. The baseline system generally consists of an optional bottom mattress support (BMS) connected to a bottom mattress cover (BMC) that partially envelops a static mattress core (SMC) from the bottom. A top mattress cover (TMC) completes the encapsulation of the foam mattress core and is attached to the BMC using top/bottom mattress cover zippers (MCZ).
Field adjustment of the mattress system is accomplished by inserting one or more mattress adjustment layers (MAL) between the top of the SMC and the TMC and inserting an adjustment border panel (ABP) via the MCZ between the TMC
and the BMC. The MAL may comprise one or more layers and may be inserted using horizontally and/or split configurations to permit a variety of ergonomic combinations to be supported in a single mattress system.

Claims (20)

37Although a preferred embodiment of the present invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawings and described in the foregoing Detailed Description, it will be understood that the invention is not limited to the embodiments disclosed, but is capable of numerous rearrangements, modifications, and substitutions without departing from the spirit of the invention as set forth and defined by the following claims.
What is claimed is:
1. A field adjustable mattress system comprising:
(a) static mattress core (SMC);
(b) top mattress cover (TMC);
(c) mattress adjustment layer (MAL);
(d) adjustment border panel (ABP);
(e) top zipper slider (TZS);
(f) bottom zipper slider (BZS); and (g) bottom mattress cover (BMC);
wherein said SMC comprises mattress material formed in the shape of a substantially rectangular prism having a top surface, a bottom surface, a vertical thickness, and a perimeter;
said MAL comprises mattress material formed in the shape of a substantially rectangular prism having a top surface, a bottom surface, a vertical thickness, and a perimeter;
said MAL vertical thickness is less than said SMC
vertical thickness;
said MAL perimeter is substantially identical to said SMC perimeter;
said TMC comprises fabric configured to conform to said MAL top surface and to envelop said MAL perimeter;
said ABP comprises fabric configured in length to conform to said perimeter of said MAL and configured in height to conform to the thickness of said MAL;

said BMC comprises fabric configured to conform to said SMC bottom surface and to partially envelop said SMC perimeter;
said BMC comprises a bottom internal surface and internal peripheral surfaces contacting said SMC
and a bottom external surface;
said TMC comprises a bottom peripheral edge comprising a bottom half zipper;
said ABP comprises a top peripheral edge comprising a top half zipper;
said ABP comprises a bottom peripheral edge comprising a bottom half zipper;
said BMC comprises a top peripheral edge comprising a top half zipper;
said TZS is configured to mate said TMC bottom half zipper and said ABP top half zipper; and said BZS is configured to mate said ABP bottom half zipper and said BMC top half zipper.
2. The field adjustable mattress system of Claim 1 wherein said MAL comprises a plurality of vertically stacked mattress adjustment layers.
3. The field adjustable mattress system of Claim 1 wherein said MAL comprises a split mattress layer with each split mattress layer having a different firmness.
4. The field adjustable mattress system of Claim 1 wherein said TMC comprises a fabric selected from a group consisting of: a hydrophobically treated fabric that repels fluid; and a water repellant fabric.
5. The field adjustable mattress system of Claim 1 wherein at least one of said TMC, said ABP, said BMC, said SMC, and said MAL comprise flame-retardant materials.
6. The field adjustable mattress system of Claim 1 wherein said SMC comprises a core material selected from a group consisting of: polyurethane foam mattress core;
memory foam core; visco elastic foam core; gel foam core; spring core; pocket coil core; latex core; air bladder; and water bladder core.
7. The field adjustable mattress system of Claim 1 wherein said MAL comprises a linear contoured surface structure.
8. The field adjustable mattress system of Claim 1 wherein said MAL comprises a non-linear contoured surface structure.
9. The field adjustable mattress system of Claim 1 wherein said TMC further comprises top edge peripheral piping.
10. The field adjustable mattress system of Claim I wherein said BMC comprises a bottom mattress support (BMS) wherein:
said BMS comprises a layer of non-skid fabric material substantially conforming to said bottom surface of said BMC; and said BMS contacts and is attached to said bottom surface of said BMC.
11. A field adjustable mattress method comprising:
(1) forming a static mattress core (SMC) comprising a mattress material in the shape of a substantially rectangular prism having a top surface, a bottom surface, a vertical thickness, and a perimeter;
(2) forming a mattress adjustment layer (MAL) comprising mattress material in the shape of a substantially rectangular prism having a top surface, a bottom surface, a vertical thickness, and a perimeter;
(3) positioning said MAL on top of said SMC to form a mattress stack;
(4) enveloping said mattress stack on the bottom and on a portion of the sides with a unitary bottom mattress cover (BMC);
(5) enveloping said mattress stack on the top and on a portion of the sides with a unitary top mattress cover (TMC);
(6) enveloping said mattress stack on a portion of the sides between said BMC and said TMC with a unitary adjustment border panel (ABP);
(7) conjoining said TMC perimeter with said ABP top perimeter using a zipper and top zipper slider (TZS); and (8) conjoining said BMC perimeter with said ABP bottom perimeter using a zipper and bottom zipper slider (BZS);

wherein said MAL vertical thickness is less than said SMC
vertical thickness;
said MAL perimeter is substantially identical to said SMC perimeter;
said TMC comprises fabric configured to conform to said MAL top surface and to envelop said MAL perimeter;
said ABP comprises fabric configured in length to conform to said perimeter of said MAL and configured in height to conform to the thickness of said MAL;
said BMC comprises fabric configured to conform to said SMC bottom surface and to partially envelop said SMC perimeter;
said BMC comprises a bottom internal surface and internal peripheral surfaces contacting said SMC
and a bottom external surface;
said TMC comprises a bottom peripheral edge comprising a bottom half zipper;
said ABP comprises a top peripheral edge comprising a top half zipper;
said ABP comprises a bottom peripheral edge comprising a bottom half zipper;
said BMC comprises a top peripheral edge comprising a top half zipper;
said TZS is configured to mate said TMC bottom half zipper and said ABP top half zipper; and said BZS is configured to mate said ABP bottom half zipper and said BMC top half zipper.
12. The field adjustable mattress method of Claim 11 wherein said MAL comprises a plurality of vertically stacked mattress adjustment layers.
13. The field adjustable mattress method of Claim 11 wherein said MAL comprises a split mattress layer with each split mattress layer having a different firmness.
14. The field adjustable mattress method of Claim 11 wherein said TMC comprises a fabric selected from a group consisting of: a hydrophobically treated fabric that repels fluid; and a water repellant fabric.
15. The field adjustable mattress method of Claim 11 wherein at least one of said TMC, said ABP, said BMC, said SMC, and said MAL comprise flame-retardant materials.
16. The field adjustable mattress method of Claim 11 wherein said SMC comprises a core material selected from a group consisting of: polyurethane foam mattress core; memory foam core; visco elastic foam core; gel foam core; spring core; pocket coil core; latex core;
air bladder; and water bladder core.
17. The field adjustable mattress method of Claim 11 wherein said MAL comprises a linear contoured surface structure.
18. The field adjustable mattress method of Claim 11 wherein said MAL comprises a non-linear contoured surface structure.
19. The field adjustable mattress method of Claim 11 wherein said TMC further comprises top edge peripheral piping.
20. The field adjustable mattress method of Claim 11 further comprising the step of:
(9) supporting the bottom of said BMC with a bottom mattress support (BMS);
wherein:
said BMS comprises a layer of non-skid fabric material substantially conforming to said bottom surface of said BMC; and said BMS contacts and is attached to said bottom surface of said BMC.
