Abstract

A rotation restraining device for a drilling apparatus comprising a rotatable drilling shaft and a housing for rotatably supporting the drilling shaft therein. The rotation restraining device includes a plurality of rotation restraining carriage assemblies spaced about a circumference of the housing. Each carriage assembly is comprised of a plurality of pistons and defines a plurality of cavities such that each of the plurality of pistons is received within a respective cavity. Each piston is comprised of an outermost engagement surface for engaging a borehole wall to restrain rotation of the housing and an opposed innermost surface. Further, each piston is slidably movable within the respective cavity between a retracted position in which the piston is circumferentially supported by the cavity substantially between the outermost engagement surface and the innermost surface of the piston and an extended position in which the outermost engagement surface extends radially from the housing.
