Abstract
Disclosed are cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations and methods for preventing or reducing irritation of skin, or inhibiting inflammation in skin. The cosmetic and pharmaceutical formulations and methods are based on the use of 3-furan carboxylic acid, 2-furan carboxylic acid, ferulic acid or mixtures thereof, and their topical application.
Claims (37)
1. A cosmetic or pharmaceutical formulation for topical application for preventing or reducing irritation caused by an irritating material applied to skin, which formulation comprises:
an antiirritant effective amount of ferulic acid and a cosmetically or pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
an antiirritant effective amount of ferulic acid and a cosmetically or pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
2. The formulation of claim 1, which also comprises a cosmetically or pharmaceutically active component, other than ferulic acid.
3. The formulation of claim 2, wherein the active component is irritating.
4. The formulation of claim 1, 2 or 3, which contains from 0.05 to 2.5% by weight of ferulic acid.
5. The formulation of any one of claims 1 to 4, which is a moisturizing cream or lotion.
6. The formulation of any one of claims 1 to 4, which is an emulsion.
7. A cosmetic or pharmaceutical formulation for topical application for inhibiting inflammation in skin, which comprises:
an effective amount of 2-furan carboxylic acid, 3-furan carboxylic acid or a mixture thereof; and a cosmetically or pharmaceutically active component, other than 2-furan carboxylic acid and 3-furan carboxylic acid.

8. The formulation of claim 7, which also comprises a cosmetically or pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
9. The formulation of claim 7 or 8, which comprises 3-furan carboxylic acid.
10. The formulation of claim 7 or 8, which comprises 2-furan carboxylic acid.
11. The formulation of claim 7 or 8, which also comprises ferulic acid.
12. The formulation of claim 11, which comprises free 2-furan carboxylic acid, free 3-furan carboxylic acid, and free ferulic acid.
13. The formulation of claim 12, which contains from 0.05 to 5% by weight of free 3-furan carboxylic acid, from 0.5 to 5% by weight of free 2-furan carboxylic acid, and from 0.05 to 2.5% by weight of free ferulic acid.
14. The formulation of any one of claims 7 to 13, which is a moisturizing cream or lotion.
15. The formulation of any one of claims 7 to 13, which is an emulsion.
16. A cosmetic or pharmaceutical formulation for topical application for treating a skin disorder having an inflammatory component, which formulation comprises:
an effective amount of 2-furan carboxylic acid, 3-furan carboxylic acid or a mixture thereof; and a cosmetically or pharmaceutically active component, other than 2-furan carboxylic acid and 3-furan carboxylic acid.

17. The formulation of claim 16, which also comprises a cosmetically or pharmaceutically acceptable carrier.
18. The formulation of claim 16 or 17, in which the skin disorder is selected from the group consisting of psoriasis, eczema, allergic contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis.
19. The formulation of claim 16, 17 or 18, which comprises free 3-furan carboxylic acid.
20. The formulation of claim 16, 17 or 18, which comprises free 2-furan carboxylic acid.
21. The formulation of claim 16, 17 or 18, which also comprises free ferulic acid.
22. The formulation of claim 21, which comprises free 2-furan carboxylic acid, free 3-furan carboxylic acid, and free ferulic acid.
23. The formulation of claim 22, which contains from 0.05 to 5% by weight of free 3-furan carboxylic acid, from 0.5 to 5% by weight of free 2-furan carboxylic acid, and from 0.05 to 2.5% by weight of free ferulic acid.
24. The formulation of any one of claims 16 to 23, which is a moisturizing cream or lotion.
25. The formulation of any one of claims 16 to 23, which is an emulsion.
26. A method for preventing or reducing irritation caused by an irritating material applied to skin, which comprises applying to the skin an antiirritant effective amount of ferulic acid.
27. A method for inhibiting inflammation in skin, which comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of 2-furan carboxylic acid, an effective amount of 3-furan carboxylic acid, or a mixture thereof.
28. The method of claim 27, which comprises applying to the skin 3-furan carboxylic acid.
29. The method of claim 27, which comprises applying to the skin 2-furan carboxylic acid.
30. The method of claim 27, which also comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of ferulic acid.
31. The method of claim 27, which comprises applying to the skin free 2-furan carboxylic acid, free 3-furan carboxylic acid, and free ferulic acid.
32. A method for treating a skin disorder having an inflammatory component, which comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of 2-furan carboxylic acid, an effective amount of 3-furan carboxylic acid, or a mixture thereof.
33. The method of claim 32, in which the skin disorder is selected from the group consisting of psoriasis, eczema, allergic contact dermatitis and atopic dermatitis.
34. The method of claim 32 or 33, which comprises applying to the skin free 3-furan carboxylic acid.
35. The method of claim 32 or 33, which comprises applying to the skin free 2-furan carboxylic acid.
36. The method of claim 32 or 33, which also comprises applying to the skin an effective amount of free ferulic acid.
37. The method of claim 32, which comprises applying to the skin free 2-furan carboxylic acid, free 3-furan carboxylic acid, and free ferulic acid.
