Abstract

A heavy lift crane is mounted on a trailer for towing by a highway tractor;
with a hydraulic pump and its driving motor mounted for rotation with the crane, with direct connection to the crane primary systems, enabling unimpeded slewing. The crane outriggers are powered by an auxiliary motor and pump, located on the trailer, with outrigger controls operable from ground level. An additional pair of outriggers enable safe use of the crane to position outrigger support pads for the outriggers. Access stairs and catwalks give the operator safer access. The construction format leads to lower cost structures with enhanced serviceability and safety.

Description

DESCRIPTION OF INVENTION
The removal of the front wheels and lower cab, larger front engine, transmission, drive train and rear ends. Complete drive train is removed and replaced by highway trailer wheels and brake system.
OBJECTIVE
The objectives of this invention are:
~ To significantly reduce the cost of manufacturing the crane.
~ To make the crane more operator "friendly", the customer can supply his own highway tractor.
~ The tractor's fifth wheel make the unit more manoeuvrable by the jack-knife ability.
~ The tractor's drive wheels would have substantially improved traction on wet or loose footing that a unit with the drive wheels at the back.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES FROM OLD SYSTEM
The new unit only requires a small engine to operate the hydraulics of the crane with an even smaller engine on an independent hydraulic unit to operate the outriggers.
The swing bearing assembly could be extremely simple and free of complicated hydraulic and electrical moving connections and parts.
This should make the unit considerably maintenance free and easier to repair.
At the end of the workday the operator uncouples the tractor and returns to the yard. If he is far from home, he is able to use the tractor unit to travel to a restaurant or motel.
Utilizing smaller engines on this unit, there is more flexibility in fuel options where the operator could choose diesel, propane or hydrogen tanks. If propane or hydrogen is used, the gooseneck or lower front of the unit could be modified to store large horizontal tanks for extra fuel that could become necessary on the jobsite. When the unit is in the travel position, a short flexible hose could be connected to the fuel tank on upper unit to recharge the hydrogen/ propane.

Alan Rodrick McDonald July 26, 2005 361 Miller Street Meaford, ON N4L 1 G9 The placement of the smaller upper motor now makes heating and cooling of operator's cab much simpler, as in the older style two motor units.
The new unit is pulled by a highway tractor can move at highway or traffic speed. The tractor cab is much more user friendly than the older "dog-house" cab.
This new system can be retrofitted to already existing machines, thereby making them more "operator and maintenance friendly".
LIMITATIONS
The stability of the operating quadrants may have to be re-engineered, however the longer "float" type of lower frame of the new unit, counter weight could be added to compensate for the loss of weight of the old drive train. That would have to be done in the event that the tractor had to be disconnected, say for uneven ground, for the unit to be levelled. However, if the tractor is left connected, the stability should be increased over the front quad, where on the older units, the front quad is usually the least stable of the four quad areas.

Claims (12)

1. A trailer-mounted heavy-lift crane having an extended trailer with fifth wheel hitch means at the front end, and a plurality of road wheels at the rear end of the trailer;
turntable means located at said trailer rear end, having an operator's cab mounted thereon; a crane boom pivotally secured to said turntable means for upward and downward pivotal displacement; hydraulic ram means for elevating and lowering said boom; hydraulic slewing means for rotatably slewing said turntable means;
hydraulic pump means mounted on said turntable means, for slewing displacement therewith; and prime-mover means secured in driving relation with said hydraulic pump means, in use to power said hydraulic ram and said hydraulic slewing means, whereby said turntable means is substantially unrestricted in the extent of said rotatable slewing.
2. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 1, wherein said prime mover is an internal combustion motor.
3. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 1, having a plurality of laterally extensible outrigger jacking means located in mutually spaced relation along said trailer, to stabilize said crane against overturning moments generated by loads applied to said load boom.
4. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 1, said outrigger jacking means consisting of three retractable, hydraulically actuated extensible jacks located in mutually spaced apart relation along each side of said trailer.
5. The heavy lift crane as set forth in claim 3, including an auxiliary hydraulic pumping system operable independently of said prime mover, and connected in selectively controllable driving relation with said outrigger jacking means.
6. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 4, including an auxiliary hydraulic pumping system operable independently of said prime mover, and connected in selectively controllable driving relation with individual ones of said outrigger jacking means.
7. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 1, including step means to facilitate access to said crane.
8. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 7, wherein said step means are built into at least one side of said trailer.
9. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 7, including catwalk means mounted on said turntable means to facilitate access to said operator's cab.
10. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 9, wherein said catwalk means are retractably mounted on said turntable means, adjacent said cab.
11. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 1, having extensive unobstructed deck means to receive associated tools in stored relation thereon.
12. The heavy lift crane as set forth in Claim 1, including built-in ballast means integrated with structural front portions of said trailer.
