La grande majorité de ces chevaux sont gardés à l'intérieur par temps froids et doivent, pour des raisons de santé, d'hygiène, d'esthétisme, etc.

On doit donc alterner les couvertures et s'ajuster assez rapidement face aux changements de températures quelquefois assez brusques afin d'éviter un coup de froid pour l'animal ou que ce dernier ait trop chaud et ne tente de la déchirer.
Près de 50% des gens vont superposer des couvertures de 150 grammes et de 300 grammes d'isolant afin de protéger leur cheval de façon adéquate contre le froid. Ces montages de couverture sont la plupart du temps instables et pas adéquats en plus de ne pas respirer convenablement. Les couvertures ont tendance à
glisser et se déplacer et sont alors rapidement arrachées par les chevaux car cela les dérange.
Afin de couvrir tous les besoins en couvertures pour protéger l'animal sous toutes les conditions atmosphériques, les propriétaires de chevaux doivent se procurer un grand nombre de couvertures (voir tableau 1). Cela représente un investissement important en plus de nécessité beaucoup d'espace d' entreposage et de multiples manipulations.
De plus, les couvertures actuelles possèdent plusieurs lacunes au niveau de leur conception, ce qui les rendent inconfortable pour les chevaux.
Cet inconfort pousse les chevaux à arracher leurs couvertures. Les systèmes d'attache sont souvent mal adaptés à la morphologie des chevaux et donc le positionnement des couvertures sur le dos des chevaux est relativement instable ce qui constitue une autre source d'inconfort. Lorsque la couverture bouge ou glisse sur le côté ou vers l'avant, elle dérange l'animal et il devient très souvent intolérant à la couverture et tente de la déchirer.
Les chevaux restent toujours actifs dans leur enclos comme au champ, même s'ils portent une couverture. Ils marchent, mangent la tête au sol, se couchent, se roulent ou peuvent faire des cabrioles. S'ils sont trop gênés dans leurs mouvements, ils peuvent « forcer » certaines parties de la couverture, arracher accidentellement des courroies ou tout simplement décider de la déchirer. Les couvertures actuelles laissent peu d'aisance aux chevaux.
De part leur structure et leurs matériaux les couvertures actuelles frottent et irritent la peau des chevaux. Ceci représente une autre source d'intolérance qui pousse les chevaux à déchirer leurs couvertures.
Compte tenu de ces lacunes importantes, les couvertures actuelles n'ont pas une vie utile très longue. D'une part, elles sont mal tolérées par les chevaux d'autre part elles se brisent et se déchirent facilement car elles ne s'adaptent pas aux activités et aux mouvements des chevaux.

DESCRIPTION DES RÉALISATIONS PRÉFÉRÉES
La réalisation préférée de l'invention est illustrée à la figure 1 où les mêmes éléments caractérisants sont identifiés par les mêmes numéros et où on voit une couverture 10 pour chevaux. La couverture 10 est une couverture trois saisons remplaçant à elle seule sept couvertures conventionnelles. La couverture 10 est spécialement conçue pour couvrir la période de septembre (début du port de couverture à isolation légère) jusqu'à mai.
Plus particulièrement, la couverture 10 comprend une couverture de base offrant 150 grammes d'isolant par pouce carré pour des températures allant jusqu'à -15°C. Tel qu'illustré aux figures 2 et 3, une pochette de nylon respirant 14 est cousue à même la couche intérieure de la couverture de base 12 pour recevoir un ou une combinaison de deux coussinets isolants 16 (figure 4) selon le degré
d'isolation recherché. La pochette 14 est préférablement cousue sur trois côtés à
l'intérieur de la couverture de base 12 et munie d'un fermoir 18 sur son quatrième côté. La pochette 14 est centrée relativement au dos du cheval et s'étend sur les côtés de ce dernier là où la perte de chaleur est reconnue pour être importante. La pochette 14 et les coussinets 16 sont donc conçus pour recouvrir exclusivement les parties où le cheval perd une partie importante de sa chaleur et où il pourrait prendre froid, soit du garrot jusqu'aux reins et les flancs. La pochette 14 et les coussinets isolants 16 sont de grandeur des formes complémentaires. La pochette 14 et les coussinets isolants 16 ont généralement une forme rectangulaire et ménagent un retrait arrondi 17 (figure 3) sur leur côté avant afin d'épouser la morphologie du cheval et ne pas gêner la mobilité au niveau du cou du cheval.

de mouvement pour le cheval. L'encolure haute 26 dégage le garrot et réduit la friction an niveau de la crinière et le risque de blessures de garrot.
Tel qu'illustré aux figures 1 et 6, une bavette frontale 28 d'environ 40"
x 19" (selon la taille de la couverture) est cousue au bas de l'encolure sur le côté droit de la couverture. Des courroies d'attache 30 sont fixées à leur base à la bavette frontale 28 au moyen d'élastiques 32. Les courroies d'attache 30 coopèrent avec des moyens d'attache correspondants 34 pour venir fixer la bavette 28 sur le côté
gauche de la couverture. Des bandes de VelcroTM sont préférablement utilisées pour les courroies d'attache 30 et les moyens d'attache correspondants 34. Les courroies 30 et les moyens d'attache 34 sont préférablement placés à un angle de 45° de façon à faire basculer le devant de la couverture vers l'arrière lorsque le cheval relève sa tête du sol. L'utilisation de la bavette frontale à moyens d'attache surbaissés permet un maximum de liberté de mouvement pour le cheval sans forcer les attaches et déplacer la couverture vers l'avant. L'utilisation d'une seule attache placée sous le point d'appui des muscles du sternum procure une stabilité accrue de la couverture sur le cheval.
En son centre supérieur, la bavette 28 a un panneau rectangulaire extensible 36 (figures 7 et 8) d'environ 8" x 6" retenu de chaque côté par un soufflet de tissu 38 surmonté d'une bande élastique 40 d'environ 2" de haut x 2%2" de large permettant l'extension de l'encolure du cheval et assurant le retour en place de la couverture lorsque l'animal relève (encolure. Le panneau extensible 36 permet grandement de réduire la pression sur la poitrine du cheval.

La bavette frontale 28 en combinaison avec les éléments d'attache extensibles 30 procurent la liberté de mouvement nécessaire au niveau de (encolure afin que le cheval puisse bouger aisément sans déplacer ou tirer la couverture 10 vers l'avant, même lors de (extension de (encolure au sol.
Des plis ou soufflets d'aisance 42 sont également prévus de part et d'autre de la couverture au niveau des pattes arrière et avant du cheval (voir figure 1).
Une bavette ventrale 44 est fixée au bas du côté droit de la couverture et munie de courroies d'attache 46 conçus pour coopérer avec des moyens d'attache prévus sur le côté gauche de la couverture. Les courroies d'attache 46 de la bavette ventrale 44 possèdent également une base élastique 48. Des bandes de VelcroTM
sont préférablement utilisées pour retenir les courroies d'attache 46 sur le côté
gauche de la couverture 12. Des sangles surbaissées (non illustrées) pourraient être utilisées en lieu et place de la bavette ventrale afin d'attacher la couverture au niveau de l'abdomen du cheval.
De par sa conception même, la couverture 10 restreint au minimum les mouvements du cheval. La coupe de l'encolure 26 et le systéme d'attaches frontales et son panneau extensible 36, les plis d'aisance 42 retrouvés aux quatre pattes et placés de façon stratégique, ainsi que Ies montages élastiques à la base de chaque courroie d'attache 30 et 46 permettent au cheval de bouger normalement sans être gêné par la couverture et sans forcer aucune des attaches.
Le fait que toutes les attaches de la couverture soient montées avec un élastique caché à la base près des points d'attache avec la couverture permet de préserver les coutures de la couverture en cas d'un excès de tension et procure un confort accru pour le cheval.
Le design de la couverture 10 fait en sorte que les principaux points d'appui de la couverture sur le cheval sont repartis sur une plus grande surface et ne risque pas de blesser le cheval ou de le rendre intolérant à la couverture.
Toutes les parties de l'encolure 26, du garrot et de la poitrine sont bordées de fourrure synthétique et les tissus utilisés ont été choisis en fonction de ne pas être irntants et de réduire la friction avec la peau du cheval.
