Abstract

The invention is an infant blanket meant for swaddling or wrapping infants, including a "V" shaped neckline and an open foot area, consisting of an inner blanket to position the arms either at the infant's sides or on the infant's midsection, along with an attached outer wrap meant to secure the applied inner blanket. The infant is placed supine on the inner blanket with the highest section of the blanket flush to the infant's shoulders. Each lateral side of the inner blanket is pulled snuggly over the infant's proximal arm, midsection and distal arm, and then tucked under the infant's side.
The outer section is then wrapped around the inner section one to two times and then tucked in where it ends, securing the entire blanket in place.

Description

TITLE OF THE INVENTION
Secure Infant Swaddling Blanket with Safety Features BACKGOUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention provides a safe and secure infant blanket, more particularly of the type commonly called a swaddling blanket, swaddling wrap, or swaddling cloth. Swaddling is generally defined in many different dictionaries and cultures as wrapping an infant with strips of cloth so the arms are either secure and in a straight position at the sides, or in a folded position on the midsection.
Swaddling dates back prior to biblical times, and it is generally done as a means to help an infant to feel calm and secure. The difficulty with typical infant blankets and wraps used for swaddling has been in maintaining the swaddling position in a safe, flexible and practical manner. No typical patents were located for comparison.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention is an ergonomically designed baby blanket meant to wrap young infants with the arms secured at the sides or folded on the midsection. It addresses three important safety issues for swaddled infants by providing a natural "V" shaped neckline which allows for ventilation, easy temperature monitoring, and prevention of the blanket neckline from contacting the infant's facial area. The infant's need for comfort is addressed by providing a flexible, stretch knit fabric for the section that wraps the infant. The invention addresses the practical needs of the caregiver by providing an open foot area making it simple to use with safety buckles, belts and harnesses in various infant seats, and by requiring no folding, enclosures or complicated techniques to keep the blanket in place.
In the drawings, which form part of this specification, Fig. 1 is the inner section of the blanket placed right side up and open; and Fig. 2 is the outer section of the blanket placed right side up and open; and Fig. 3 is fig. 1 and fig. 2 assembled together in an open and unapplied position, illustrating the inner section positioned and stitched to the outer section.
DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Fig. 1(1) represents the angles necessary for the applied "V" shaped neckline at the top and the applied open foot area below.
Fig. 1(2) represents the 20cm space between lateral slopes necessary to cover the infant's upper back while the lateral sides of the section are applied to form the "V" shaped neckline.
Fig. 2(3) represents the outer section measuring 131 cm across. Combined with a flexible knit fabric this measurement enables the outer section to wrap the infant a maximum of 1-2 times to secure itself and the applied inner section.
Fig. 2(4) represents the slope necessary to wrap down the infant when applied, away from the facial area.
Fig. 3(5) represents the outer section measuring 2 cm higher than the inner section. When applied, this ensures that the outer section covers and secures the inner section, whilst keeping the fabric taut at the infant's shoulders.
Fig. 3(6) represents 5 cm spaced vertical, parallel lines of stitch securing the inner and the outer sections durably, yet allowing enough room for the lateral sides of the inner section to be pulled over the infant's arms and midsection and then tucked back under the infant's opposite side.
Fig. 3(7) represents the horizontal lines of stitch that appropriately position the applied "V" shaped neckline.

Claims (12)

1. An infant swaddling blanket comprising:

.cndot. an 82cm x 49cm inner blanket section used as a means to secure the infant's arms either at the sides or folded on the midsection, by positioning the infant supine on said inner blanket section with the top of said inner blanket section flush to the infant's shoulders, then by pulling the peripheral sides of said inner blanket over the infant's arms and midsection and tucking in under the infant's opposite side, .cndot. a 131cm x 46cm outer wrap section that slopes laterally to promote downward wrapping used as a means to wrap the baby 1-2 times, then tuck back into said outer wrap section to secure said outer wrap section and secure the applied inner blanket section, .cndot. a naturally forming "V" shaped neckline wherein upon application of said infant swaddling blanket fabric is prevented from contacting the infant's facial area, .cndot. strategically placed parallel lines of "T" shaped stitching functioning to secure the two sections and functioning to appropriately position the applied "V" shaped neckline.
2. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein upon application, said infant swaddling blanket is flexible to the infant's movement; therefore, it is comfortable
3. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein upon application of said infant swaddling blanket the "V" shaped neckline with its consequent open chest area provides ventilation.
4. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein upon application of said infant swaddling blanket the "V" shaped neckline enables basic temperature monitoring.
5. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein upon application, the consequent open foot area in said infant swaddling blanket allows proper use of safety buckles, belts and harnesses in various baby seats.
6. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein said infant swaddling blanket is basic to apply.
7. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein said infant swaddling blanket causes layers of thin fabric to wrap the infant which functions to distribute heat evenly.
8. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein said infant swaddling blanket functions to position the infant in the supine position.
9. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein said infant swaddling blanket functions to wrap down; therefore, away from the infant's facial area.
10. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein said infant swaddling blanket provides a snug yet flexible swaddling position.
11. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein said infant swaddling blanket provides a flexible swaddling position.
12. The infant swaddling blanket recited in claim 1 wherein said infant swaddling blanket functions as an infant blanket that stays securely on the infant's body.
