Abstract
The invention is an infant blanket meant for swaddling or wrapping infants, including a "V" shaped neckline and an open foot area, consisting of an inner blanket to position the arms either at the infant's sides or on the infant's midsection, along with an attached outer wrap meant to secure the applied inner blanket. The infant is placed supine on the inner blanket with the highest section of the blanket flush to the infant's shoulders. Each lateral side of the inner blanket is pulled snuggly over the infant's proximal arm, midsection and distal arm, and then tucked under the infant's side.
The outer section is then wrapped around the inner section one to two times and then tucked in where it ends, securing the entire blanket in place.
The outer section is then wrapped around the inner section one to two times and then tucked in where it ends, securing the entire blanket in place.
Description
TITLE OF THE INVENTION
Secure Infant Swaddling Blanket with Safety Features BACKGOUND OF THE INVENTION
This invention provides a safe and secure infant blanket, more particularly of the type commonly called a swaddling blanket, swaddling wrap, or swaddling cloth. Swaddling is generally defined in many different dictionaries and cultures as wrapping an infant with strips of cloth so the arms are either secure and in a straight position at the sides, or in a folded position on the midsection.
Swaddling dates back prior to biblical times, and it is generally done as a means to help an infant to feel calm and secure. The difficulty with typical infant blankets and wraps used for swaddling has been in maintaining the swaddling position in a safe, flexible and practical manner. No typical patents were located for comparison.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The invention is an ergonomically designed baby blanket meant to wrap young infants with the arms secured at the sides or folded on the midsection. It addresses three important safety issues for swaddled infants by providing a natural "V" shaped neckline which allows for ventilation, easy temperature monitoring, and prevention of the blanket neckline from contacting the infant's facial area. The infant's need for comfort is addressed by providing a flexible, stretch knit fabric for the section that wraps the infant. The invention addresses the practical needs of the caregiver by providing an open foot area making it simple to use with safety buckles, belts and harnesses in various infant seats, and by requiring no folding, enclosures or complicated techniques to keep the blanket in place.
In the drawings, which form part of this specification, Fig. 1 is the inner section of the blanket placed right side up and open; and Fig. 2 is the outer section of the blanket placed right side up and open; and Fig. 3 is fig. 1 and fig. 2 assembled together in an open and unapplied position, illustrating the inner section positioned and stitched to the outer section.

DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Fig. 1(1) represents the angles necessary for the applied "V" shaped neckline at the top and the applied open foot area below.
Fig. 1(2) represents the 20cm space between lateral slopes necessary to cover the infant's upper back while the lateral sides of the section are applied to form the "V" shaped neckline.
Fig. 2(3) represents the outer section measuring 131 cm across. Combined with a flexible knit fabric this measurement enables the outer section to wrap the infant a maximum of 1-2 times to secure itself and the applied inner section.
Fig. 2(4) represents the slope necessary to wrap down the infant when applied, away from the facial area.
Fig. 3(5) represents the outer section measuring 2 cm higher than the inner section. When applied, this ensures that the outer section covers and secures the inner section, whilst keeping the fabric taut at the infant's shoulders.
Fig. 3(6) represents 5 cm spaced vertical, parallel lines of stitch securing the inner and the outer sections durably, yet allowing enough room for the lateral sides of the inner section to be pulled over the infant's arms and midsection and then tucked back under the infant's opposite side.
Fig. 3(7) represents the horizontal lines of stitch that appropriately position the applied "V" shaped neckline.

Fig. 3(7) represents the horizontal lines of stitch that appropriately position the applied "V" shaped neckline.
