Abstract
An animal umbrella is disclosed. The animal umbrella comprises a saddle, straps connected to the saddle for detachably attaching the saddle to the animal, a collapsible canopy, a shaft with first and second ends, connected at the first end to the canopy, and connected at the second end to the saddle in a pivotable manner, and a position lock to releasably secure the shaft in a vertical position.
The shaft can be pivoted between a substantially vertical position and a substantially horizontal position, so that in a vertical position the canopy is open and held vertically, and in a horizontal position the canopy is closed and lies horizontally along the animal's back.

Claims (19)
1. An umbrella for an animal comprising:
a saddle;
straps connected to the saddle for detachably attaching the saddle to the animal;
a collapsible canopy;
a shaft with first and second ends, connected at the first end to the canopy, and connected at the second end to the saddle in a pivotable manner, wherein the shaft can be pivoted at the second end between a substantially vertical position and a substantially horizontal position; and a position lock to releasably secure the shaft in the said vertical position.

a shaft with first and second ends, connected at the first end to the canopy, and connected at the second end to the saddle in a pivotable manner, wherein the shaft can be pivoted at the second end between a substantially vertical position and a substantially horizontal position; and a position lock to releasably secure the shaft in the said vertical position.
2. The umbrella of claim 1, wherein the straps extend around the torso of the animal and at least two legs when fitted to the animal.
3. The umbrella of claim 1 or 2, further comprising a strap extending around the chest of the animal.
4. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein the straps are elasticized.
5. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the straps comprise fasteners for securing the straps to the animal.
6. The umbrella of claim 5, wherein the fasteners are hook and pile fabric.
7. The umbrella of claim 5, wherein the fasteners are snap buttons located at least one end of each strap for snapping the straps to the saddle.
8. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 7, wherein the straps are adjustable in length.
9. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 8, wherein the canopy is substantially rectangular.
10. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 9, wherein the shaft is adjustable in length.
11. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 10, further comprising a folded canopy holder for securing the shaft and canopy to the saddle when the shaft is in the substantially horizontal position and the canopy is folded.
12. The umbrella of claim 11, wherein the folded canopy holder is a clip lock.
13. The umbrella of claim 11, wherein the folded canopy holder is a strap.
14. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 13, further comprising a leash-receiving ring secured to the saddle.
15. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 14, wherein the animal is a dog.
16. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 15, which further comprises:
a plate secured to the saddle;
first and second mutually substantially parallel planar members secured substantially perpendicularly to the plate; and a first pin which passes through the first planar member, through a first hole in the second end of the shaft, and through the second planar member and secures the shaft pivotally to the saddle.

The umbrella of claim 16, wherein the position lock comprises a second pin, wherein said second pin passes through the first planar member, through a second hole in the second end of the shaft, and through the second planar member, said second pin releasably engaging the first and second planar members such that when the first and second planar members are engaged by the second pin, the shaft is maintained in a substantially vertical position, and when the second pin is disengaged from the first and second planar members, the shaft can be lowered to a substantially horizontal position.
18. The umbrella of claim 17, wherein the second pin is resilient.
19. The umbrella of any one of claims 1 to 15, further comprising:
a tube, said tube being attached to the saddle for receiving the second end of the shaft;
a fastener comprising a ring which encircles the tube, which fastener, when engaged, tightens the metal ring and secures the shaft.
