Description

MACHINE FOR CUTTING CURBSTONES AND SIDEWALKS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an apparatus suitable for cutting curbstones, sidewalks and the like, and more particularly, relates to a mobile apparatus which may be mounted on a vehicle.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Frequently it is necessary; for municipalities or like organizations, to cut through a curbstone or a sidewalk either for the purpose of making repairs or to modify the structure to provide, for example, a drive through ramp to a sidewalk. Apart from attempting to proceed with the same using conventional equipment, it is frequently desirable to have equipment which can efficiently and quickly cut through the curbstone or sidewalk.
Such equipment is known in the art and thus, for example, reference may be had to U.S. Patent 3,649,071 which shows a piece of equipment which is located centrally of a wheel mounted frame which is attachable to a tractor or like vehicle. In use, the wheels of the frame of one side will rest on the street pavement, but the wheels on the other side of the frame have to be located on the side of the curbstone c>r sidewalk.
Frequently, this train is uneven so that the frame has to be leveled. In certain instances, it would be very difficult to dispose the cutting saw in a horizontal manner.
An improvement on the above is illustrated in U.S. Patent 4,433,871 wherein there is provided a saw holding carrier which moves along a bridge structure on either one of two riding tracks which are fixed relative to each other. One track is used when it is required to cut a horizontal slot through a sidewalk or a curbstone. The other track, being at a fixed predetermined angle with respect to the first track, is used to cut a slot 'which is inclined to the predetermined angle.
In order to change from one mode to the other, one must first displace the carrier at the end of one track, shift it onto a turntable which is in rotated manually through 180° so that the carrier can be pushed over to the other track. In order to operate at an angle other than the predetermined angle, a different and separate mechanism has to be used to tilt the complete bridge structure.
An improvement on the above arrangement is shown in U.S. Patent 4,79?,190 which teaches a rail structure on two spaced horizontal booms whereby the rail structure can be oscillated by a single mechanism such that the saw can operate either in a horizontal made or at any desired angle. The Patentee teaches a structure wherein there are pillow blocks having a rotary cylinder, the cylinders being formed with bores of a non circular cross sectional configuration such that the rail structure suspension members slidably extends through the non circular bore for rotation with the cylinders.
While the above arrangement is a substantial improvement over what was previously known, the apparatus still suffers from the disadvantages that it is unable to take into account arrangements where one end must be moved slightly. Rather, both ends must be moved simultaneously in order that they remained aligned.
SUlVI~TARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a machine for cutting curbstones and sidewalks or the like and which machine or apparatus provides a mechanism.
to allow for unequal displacement of the carrier which carries the saw blade assembly.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided an apparatus suitable for cutting, the apparatus being mounted on a base, the apparatus comprising a
-2-pair of spaced parallel booms mounted on the base, a rail structure mounted on the pair of parallel booms and being movable along the booms, connecting means extending from the pair of parallel booms to support the rail structure, the rail structure including a suspension member mounted in the support structure, the support stnzcture having a pair of ball and socket joints to receive the rail structure.
The apparatus of the present invention is preferably mobile and to this extent, the apparatus can conveniently be mounted on a movable platform or base. Most conveniently, as is shown in the prior art, the apparatus can be mounted on a truck or like vehicle so that it may be moved from one location to the other.
The apparatus will include a saw mounted on a suitable carriage and which carriage is movable along the rail structure. Again, such an arrangement is known in the art as shown in the aforementioned patents and any conventional mounting arrangement may be utilized.
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
Having thus generally described the invention, reference will be made to the accompanying drawings illustrating an embodiment thereof, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a portion of an apparatus for cutting curbstones, sidewalks and the like;
Figure 2 is a front elevational view thereof;
Figure 3 is a detailed perspective view illustrating the mounting of the main rail structure to horizontal booms;
Figure 4 is a perspective view of the lateral support member for mounting of the main rail structure; and
-3-Figure 5 is an end view of a portion of the apparatus showing a saw carriage assembly.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS
Referring to the drawings in greater detail and by reference characters thereto, there is illustrated in Figure 1 an apparatus according to one embodiment of the invention and which apparatus is generally designated by reference nun-~eral 10.
Apparatus 10 is generally symmetrical about a vertical plane and thus, only a portion of the components will be described with like components on the other side of the plane being designated with a prime.
Apparatus 10 includes vertical supports which are generally designated by reference numerals 16, 16'. Vertical supports 16 comprise an outer support portion 12 and. an inner support portion 14. Portions 14 and 16 are slidably engaged and suitable means are provided (not shown) for securing the two portions together at a desired height.
Mounted on the upper extremity of outer support portion 12 is a bracket generally designated by reference numeral 18 and which includes a plurality of ears 20 extending outwardly therefrom. Between a pair of ears 20 there is provided a horizontally extending boom 22. Boom 22 is pivotable about a pivot pin 24 extending through ears 20.
Booms 22, 22' terminate at a distal end in an end bf;am 26. End beam 26 has a pair of adjustable supports 28, 28'. Adjustable supports 28' may comprise an outer cylinder 30 having a shaft 32 engaging a footpad 34 to thereby provide for adjustment of the high of end beam 26.
A hydraulic cylinder generally designated by reference numeral 36 includes a main body 38 and shaft 40 extending outwardly therefrom. Main body 38 is connected between
-4-ears 20 by means of pivot pin 24 while shaft 40 is connected to a lateral support; 42 which is illustrated in greater detail in Figures 3 and 4.
Lateral support 42 includes an upper portion 44 mounted on boom 22 in a sliding relationship thereto. As with all the movable components described herein, a suitable bushing may be provided. Extending downwardly from rapper portions 44 are a.
pair of flanges 46 which interconnect to a lower portion 48. Lower portion 48 has a socket 50 and ball 52 structure.
The apparatus includes a rail structure generally designated by reference numeral 54 and which includes a track 56 upon which a carriage is designed to ride.
Mounted above track 56 is a suspension member 58 which is mounted within lateral supports 42..
As may be best seen in Figure 3, there is provided a clamping portion 60 having ears 62 extending upwardly therefrom and which are designed to receive the shaft oiF cylinder 64. Extending downwardly from clamping portion 60 are guide elements 66 which are designed to run along slider 68 of track 56.
There is also provided, for longitudinal movement, a hydraulic cylinder ',70 as well as, at one end of the rail structure, a further hydraulic cylinder 72.
As may be seen in Figure 5, a carriage assembly generally designated by reference numeral 74 may be provided. such a saw carriage assembly is known in the art and it will not be described in detail herein.
It will be understood that the above described embodiment is for purposes of illustration only and that changes or modifications may be made thereto without: departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.
