Description
MACHINE FOR CUTTING CURBSTONES AND SIDEWALKS
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to an apparatus suitable for cutting curbstones, sidewalks and the like, and more particularly, relates to a mobile apparatus which may be mounted on a vehicle.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Frequently it is necessary; for municipalities or like organizations, to cut through a curbstone or a sidewalk either for the purpose of making repairs or to modify the structure to provide, for example, a drive through ramp to a sidewalk. Apart from attempting to proceed with the same using conventional equipment, it is frequently desirable to have equipment which can efficiently and quickly cut through the curbstone or sidewalk.
Such equipment is known in the art and thus, for example, reference may be had to U.S. Patent 3,649,071 which shows a piece of equipment which is located centrally of a wheel mounted frame which is attachable to a tractor or like vehicle. In use, the wheels of the frame of one side will rest on the street pavement, but the wheels on the other side of the frame have to be located on the side of the curbstone c>r sidewalk.
Frequently, this train is uneven so that the frame has to be leveled. In certain instances, it would be very difficult to dispose the cutting saw in a horizontal manner.
An improvement on the above is illustrated in U.S. Patent 4,433,871 wherein there is provided a saw holding carrier which moves along a bridge structure on either one of two riding tracks which are fixed relative to each other. One track is used when it is required to cut a horizontal slot through a sidewalk or a curbstone. The other track, being at a fixed predetermined angle with respect to the first track, is used to cut a slot 'which is inclined to the predetermined angle.
In order to change from one mode to the other, one must first displace the carrier at the end of one track, shift it onto a turntable which is in rotated manually through 180° so that the carrier can be pushed over to the other track. In order to operate at an angle other than the predetermined angle, a different and separate mechanism has to be used to tilt the complete bridge structure.
An improvement on the above arrangement is shown in U.S. Patent 4,79?,190 which teaches a rail structure on two spaced horizontal booms whereby the rail structure can be oscillated by a single mechanism such that the saw can operate either in a horizontal made or at any desired angle. The Patentee teaches a structure wherein there are pillow blocks having a rotary cylinder, the cylinders being formed with bores of a non circular cross sectional configuration such that the rail structure suspension members slidably extends through the non circular bore for rotation with the cylinders.
While the above arrangement is a substantial improvement over what was previously known, the apparatus still suffers from the disadvantages that it is unable to take into account arrangements where one end must be moved slightly. Rather, both ends must be moved simultaneously in order that they remained aligned.
SUlVI~TARY OF THE INVENTION
It is an object of the present invention to provide a machine for cutting curbstones and sidewalks or the like and which machine or apparatus provides a mechanism.
to allow for unequal displacement of the carrier which carries the saw blade assembly.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided an apparatus suitable for cutting, the apparatus being mounted on a base, the apparatus comprising a
